Default FS: JIC FLT-A2 Coilovers

For Sale:

JIC FLT-A2 Coilvers
- for '02+ WRX, '04 STi
- pillowball topmounts on all 4 corners
- camber adjustable front plates
- has the extended throw rear struts
- 7kg/mm front springs
- 5kg/mm rear springs
- 7kg/mm rear springs w/ helpers
- 40mm inverted dampers
- non-independent bump and rebound damping adjustment (bump and rebound both adjusted by same screw)
- independent ride-height adjustment (lower the car w/o changing spring pre-load or strut throw)
- approx 15k miles on them
- $1000 ($1600 new)

I won't BS you, these coilovers bounce on the freeway, they are *not* comfortable. I daily drove on them for about a year. Not bad at all around town but I *hated* them on the freeway. They were great at soaking up the big bumps, but I think they're over sprung for the little stuff and would bounce on what looked like smooth road. So if you commute on the freeway, I'd suggest passing on 'em. With a load of stuff in the trunk, they seemed to smooth out, so if you've got a 2nd gen Legacy or Outback, they might be a decent choice due to the extra weight. Preloading the rear springs might achieve the same effect as well, but since I was happy w/ the on-track handling, I stopped fussing with them.

On track/autocross, they rocked. I went to a stiffer rear spring for a little but of a looser setup, and used a helper simply to capture the shorter 7k spring. Spring rates are linear on all 6 main springs. Both sets of rear springs and the helpers are included.

Bump and rebound are adjustable, but there's a single screw that changes them both at the same time. Inverted struts reduce unsprung weight. Ride height is rediculously adjustable... I had the car +1 inch above stock and -3 inches below stock (it rubbed badly), and there was more adjustment to spare. Height adjustment does not effect damper pre-load.

On my car, these coilover never clunked or squeeked or anything... they were dead quiet.

As with any coilovers, you will need rear camber bolts and an alignment to make these work. They will drop into any 2002-2005 WRX/RS, and the 2004 STi. Other Imprezas will work with different rear topmounts.

Struts are off the car and sitting on my garage floor. I will post pics as soon as I clean them up. I'm asking $1000 for the set, including the extra springs. They sell new for $1500-$1700.

Here's the car with them installed:

How bad is the freeway bouncing? What was the ride like on various parts of the 395, such as through Reno, Washoe, etc?

The bounce isn't terrible when compared to other stiff coilovers. The problem is that it seemed to oscilate more than necessary after a small bump in the road. Over large bumps or rough road it's fine, it's just the little bumps seemed to make the car oscillate once or twice. It didn't bother me until about an hour into a drive. So around town, or on short trips, no big whoop. But after about an hour, say driving to Sacramento or something, I'd start to feel tossed about.

I tried a bunch of things to fix the issue. Initially I thought it was an issue of being over-damped... with the bounce being caused by the tires themselves. I so I went to the stiffer rear springs. It helped the bounce a little, but didn't get rid of it. The nice side effect was that the stiffer rear springs really made the car ride great for autocross. So I stopped trying to dial out the bounce and just lived with it, since I wasn't driving long distance very often.

In hindsight, I think the car is actually over-sprung... which is what normally causes bounce. Some softer springs on the car may actually make it downright comfortable, but I need some stiff rates for the track, so I never tried that route. The JICs use standard 2.5" ID springs, so anything from the Eibach catalog would work, which means you can get a complete set of springs for around $200 IIRC.

Since you're local, if you're interested in buying the coilovers, I'd be happy to help with the install, plus I've got everything to do an alignment in my garage, so you wouldn't need to drop $70 at a shop later.

If you'd like to take a look at 'em, and/or discuss the bounce issue in person, I'll be around tonight if you don't mind making the trip up to Reno. I live in the South Meadows area so it's not terribly far from Carson. PM me for my phone number.

Sorry, I posted right before leaving for work. I spent nearly 12 hours (got home about 4:30AM) setting up my fall sales floor re-lay. . .

I won't be able to afford any major mods to the car until october, so if someone else decides to pick them up, go for it. I'm definitely interested in them, but I need to decide how deep I can afford to go right off the bat.

Are you going to be at Bully's on thursday?

I may or may not make it to the meet depending on work. This week is going to be pretty rough (as if the last 20 days of 12 hours days wasn't rough enough...).
