Well I am not beating myself up for those slow times, I have only ran like 8 total races so far, and most of those were two lappers. I did however win a 2 lap race in the dirt with a mitsubishi!!!! 4 pts baby! I have not played a video game of any kind since probably 96 or 97 well maybe an original zelda or something but nothing like this.

I didnt expect Scott to jump back on his controller, but I did want to get some sort of baseline as to the difference between the two. After about 20 laps of the controller, and learning that when you tires are red, you need to PIT! I did start to get the turns down, even figured the hairpin out on the last 5 laps or so. I dont have alot of time to play it but I am anxious to get my wheel. And that is a smoking time Bem with a controller.

cody 2006-02-10 10:10 AM

Ez, you make it sound like your running the Challenge in Gran Turismo mode since you mention the tires turning red. You do know the challenge is to be run in Arcade Mode right? Maybe you were just speaking generally though. :?:

Ezdno 2006-02-10 10:54 AM

No you can set your tire wear to none, mild, or strong, in the options settings in arcade mode. I set mine to mild tire wear. I was just messing with the settings, thats the same place that I made my race to 30 laps. I have not even attempted to play GT mode yet. With it set to mild it shows your tires and green is new, then blue, then yellow, orange, red etc.... the closer to red they are the closer to the wall you tend to be

cody 2006-02-10 11:00 AM

Oh, you're racing. That's fine, but the rest of us our doing time trials.

Ezdno 2006-02-10 12:34 PM

explain the difference I am in arcade mode, with the same track as yours, same car, I just changed the laps to 30 instead of 2

Dude, run Arcade Mode -> Time Trials... then there's ZERO tire wear, and unlimited laps, plus the ghost car to compare yourself against your fastest lap, as well as the lap analyzer.

cody 2006-02-10 12:41 PM

The difference is, when you first enter Arcade mode, the first menu you get gives you 4 options: Lan Race, 2 player race, race against the computer, or time trial. We choose time Trial, you choose "race against the computer". No, it's not actually called, "race against the computer", but I forget what it's called.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-10 01:12 PM

Is there anyway to turn the ghost off in Arcade mode? Sometimes I'm just barely behind myself, but the ghost blocks my view. I know you can turn it of in GT mode by pressing Select I think, but I don't know how to in Arcade!

bemani 2006-02-10 01:16 PM

Press up.

HAHAHAHA OH YEAH, it's up. Forgot about that. Thanks mucho.

Ezdno 2006-02-10 04:19 PM

I press SINGLE Race...but thanks, I will check out the Time Trials, this is actually better than me running my wagon into the walls on the freeway! Although not near as heartpounding.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-11 02:14 PM

You don't want Single race... the other cars will mess up your line and stuff.

I like the ghost, I always drive faster when i'm racing something.

I like it, but sometimes I'm just barely behind it and I can't see the turn ahead and it pisses me off.

Bob Danger 2006-02-12 07:52 PM

You shouldn't need to see the turn, if your responces are quick enough you should be able to follow your original line behind the ghost, or wait another nano-second to brake which will put you in front of the ghost.

Interesting. I can't drive behind the ghost for shit. Too distracting. I toggle the ghost on, then right back off to get a reference on where I am laptimewise. I don't need the ghost of myself to tell me where the line is :)

I like it on, I can see if i'm improving my line and braking in the corners by how much distance I put between myself and the ghost.

That's how I do it... I remapped the ghost toggle button to the O on my wheel... a quick double tap is all I need to see where I am compared to the ghost, plus I watch the position indicator in the upper left corner.

And back to this challenge... I finally ran some more laps tonight... I'm only into the low 1'48's, so I don't think I've figured out this car/track. I find my fastest times are when I just let the car slide all over kingdom come, and get lucky and not spin or hit the wall.

Okay, I've come to a conclusion... I'd have more fun doing my taxes, than continuing to run this challenge. That Miata needs twice as much power, three times shorter gearing, and four times stiffer suspension... then it might be slighty more fun to drive at this course than the 1 hp Benz Concept Motor Carriage. Now, I don't think it's the car alone... it's just that there is ZERO rhythm to this track in this car. There's a 3 lap challenge in the game where you have to drive slower, softer, muscle cars on this course, but for some reason the corners just seem to flow into each other in that car.... but not at all with the Miata. I had more fun in the 15 laps I ran at Sears Point than in the 200 I've run at Seattle.

All I know is, the only way I'm going to get faster is by simply throwing the car through the corners another 200 times and getting lucky and not hitting the wall or sliding too much and eventually get a decent time. But the challenge is just way too boring to run for another 6 hours.

So here's my best time. I'll even post the video in a bit so you can tell me where I can improve on this lap. Not that I'm going to try anymore... at least not tonight... and probably not tomorrow, since I think I'm going to make plans to get a root canal on a perfectly healthy tooth for fun instead.

<-- Tongue firmly in cheek... but serious about not trying for a faster time.

I'm gonna go play rFactor instead. V8 SuperCars at Trois Rivieres FTW!

cody 2006-02-13 08:06 AM

I thought this challenge was fun because it was basically the opposite of the previous challenge...and I'd never hit this track or car before...

bemani 2006-02-13 08:43 AM

Root canals are overrated, there's nothing special to the procedure.

Scott needs some motivation:

sperry 2006-02-13 11:27 AM

Yeah, I know I'm not far off the pace... but that lap I got my 1'48 was kind of a fluke lap where I just happened to drift the car w/o hitting anything. I ran another 50 laps or so after it and couldn't keep up with my ghost... and I got too frustrated to keep at it.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-13 09:49 PM

You ran 50 MORE laps? Wow.

I think over the week I've run about 200 laps... my best time came about 3/4 of the way through, and I got frustrated at not being even close after that.

So, it's looking like Bemani's got this one... unless Gary or someone else throws down.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-14 08:14 AM

200 X 1.48 = appox. 5 hours of playing time. Did you do all those laps consecutively? I give you props for being able to keep your cool for that long.

GarySheehan 2006-02-14 09:29 AM

I've done about 50 laps total. I got a 1:48.4xx. My parents are in town for my daughter's first birthday, which is today! :) Probably won't be improving my time on this challenge.

By the way, have I shown you my codriver in training?

Thats an incorrect assumption. He was able to play for that long, but he certainly didn't keep his cool the whole time

doubleurx 2006-02-14 09:48 AM

Gary that is a great picture. I want a setup like that. My son would love that almost as much as I. Happy Birthday to your daughter.

sperry 2006-02-14 10:25 AM

So Gary, if she hangs on to your ears or something, is that an FIA approved head restraint?

As far as the 5 hours and keeping my cool... it was more like 6 hours of playing, so it was probably more than 200 laps... but that's spread over a few sessions, not all at once. I stop when I get too frustrated. Usually when I come back to it, I pick up right were I left off, but I'm much fresher and have a better mindset, which helps to get the times down.

However, when I used to race NASCAR 2 online in a league, we'd run 50% length races... with all the yellows at tracks like Sears Point and Bristol, it was easily 4 hours straight behind the wheel. And if you think restrictor plate racing is lame, try drafting for 3 hours straight with 15 other people... there is *zero* time to relax when a mistake doesn't only mean ending your night, it means ending 3 or 4 of your friend's nights too. No one wants to be "that guy" that starts "the big one"... it's actually very intense.

Back to the challenge... unless I missed something, Alan took this one... but he also picked it on behalf of Gary... so does that mean he gets to pick again, or is it back to me?

cody 2006-02-14 10:30 AM

If Alan wins, whoever gets 2nd place makes the rules for the next challenge.

 I just realized today is Tuesday... for some reason I thought last night was the end of the challenge.

I guess I can still run a few laps tonight and see if I'm still pissed off.

cody 2006-02-14 10:43 AM

At least you didn't confuse two threads. ;)

 Actually, I remember the last two 'dega races we ran, you got hit within the 1st 30 laps, while I got spun by *the same guy* (Downforce was his name IIRC) both times on the last lap while leading. God I was livid!

I've been too busy turning laps at Toban in a Carrera Cup car in rFactor. It's about eleventy-billion times more entertaining.

Well Gary, since you are the WinnAr, what's the next Challenge going to consist of?

GarySheehan 2006-02-15 10:16 AM

What's a snipe?

I've got to get back to my PS2 later and take a look at what's available to us. Anyone have any good suggestions? I'd like to drive a racecar again.
