I've been driving rFactor instead of GT4 too much... I haven't really put too much time into this challenge... I'll hit it up tonight, assuming I don't spend all evening under the WRX.

I just got it back after 8+ months of shop time... so the motor's finally back together, but I need to swap the rear top mounts, align the suspension, bleed the brakes, install new fender liners, fabricate brake ducts, install a new battery tiedown, wire the DCCD, rewire and plumb the aquamist kit to the trunk, replumb the oil breather system w/ better hoses, install an oil cooler/remote filter, install the skip plate, install the tow hook, and god knows how many other little things need to be done before the season starts April 1st.

JonnydaJibba 2006-03-06 10:52 AM

WOW.

On the plus side, the go pedal works now

The car probably has the best power to weight ratio of all the cars in the group now, except maybe for Mike T's evo. Street Mod will be very interesting this year

GarySheehan 2006-03-06 01:03 PM

What's "the group"? Does our STi racecar count ;)

Sperry, so you're saying that your looking down the barrel of a day and a half of work? :) (says the Tinkerer...)

Well considering I tend to work 10+ hours a day at the paying job, it's not as easy to get a lot done on the car between 10pm and midnight as you might think.

And if you bring that racecar up to Reno and start running autocross and trials with us, I'd consider it "part of the group". ;) Though I don't want to venture a guess at which class that thing would be in.

That's when I get most of the work done. What's the problem?

Ha! Classing would be tough with the winglets!

So that's your car in SubieSport? I also saw a teaser on the cover of C & D. I haven't read the article yet.

GarySheehan 2006-03-06 02:07 PM

Well, not MY car. It's Easy Street's car. I just drive it.

hey all. i keep getting a 1.39 and im bored. this car is only fast if you toss it, which is actually slower. :?:

my memory card got thrown away by a serious of misfortune and after letting a fellow subie driver borrow my logictech wheel that is broken. so im stuck in arcade mode with a controller after beating all main races and half endurance....

cody 2006-03-06 07:55 PM

Hey Marty! A new Challenge will start tommorow evening. :)

Damn you Bemani! :D

1'43.456 was the best I've done after about 40 laps. I'm making mistakes as always, but I dig this car. I feel like everything is slowed down so I have a better chance of driving halfway decent. I can't wait to see some video of Sperry and Outferno.

Don't hold your breath, I'm not even in the neighborhood... I think my best lap is a 1'39.xxx.... Though I have figured out how to drift the shit out of that car.... it's just not fast.

cody 2006-03-07 08:58 AM

What, you only post videos when you win? You should post a cinematic vid for this one. All the drifting would look cool. :)

Oh, I thought you were waiting on a video showing how to drive the track fast. I'll post my lap of course, it's just not going to be as quick as Alan and Gary, unless I figure something out that I haven't yet.

cody 2006-03-07 10:26 AM

You wouldn't believe how often I say to myself, "Wow, I was doing that wrong" when I see how you tackle a corner Sperry. Even if you don't win, you're still 4 seconds faster than me (so far ;) )

rallytheshytoutofwrx 2006-03-07 12:12 PM

so if i am doing this in arcade mode with sport softs is that the same as what you guys are doing?

Yah, and before you go to run, if you click on the toolbox, you can lower the weight and raise power, as well. All options for the car that are available will be there.

rallytheshytoutofwrx 2006-03-07 07:10 PM

yeah i know but im not allowed to soup it up for these missions right?

cody 2006-03-07 07:27 PM

You actually can adjust anything that's not greyed out. Check the first post for the rules. Theoretically, if you win, you make the rules.

rallytheshytoutofwrx 2006-03-07 07:31 PM

cool - imma try again on trial mtn, sadly still with my controller, this time no weight and lots of power....

edit: ahhh, the rule sheet. got it, thanks. :D
(my 1.39 was using the end shortcut and stock power/weight/etc..)

cody 2006-03-07 10:30 PM

No shortcuts! :)

I just put in 11 laps and I'm down to 1'41.265.

cody 2006-03-07 11:28 PM

1'40.771

I finished with a 1'39.789, but I'm just going to post up some drift laps once I get 'em edited.

what's the next challenge?

Okay... this in no way compares to the stuff the "hard core" GT4 drift guys pull off... it's just a pair of laps where I do my best Tiff Needell impression.

Laps are around 1'45 to 1'50 IIRC... so you can see how much slower sliding is.

TT8 Drifiting!

(The file is taking forever to upload, so I'm just gonna post this and go to bed. It should be ready for download at about 1:15am or so.)

Oh, and nice job to Alan, Gary and Cody... anything 1'40 and less is impressive. That car is difficult to drive quickly!

outferno 2006-03-08 02:28 AM

Sperry: those are some really clean drifts you had. A few of the turns you could have drifted also, but it would have slowed you down. Very nice though :D

Charlie

outferno 2006-03-08 02:31 AM

Oh snaps, I just noticed Gary Sheehan is an actual track driver! Snaps. I just have to ask you: how realistic is GT4? And vs Forza? (If you've played it).

Charlie

i got a 1.38, only a little more than a second better than with no power and more weight. on the last corner i drifted in 4th 2 inside wheels just gracing the off-course/rumble

cody 2006-03-08 09:10 AM

Did you have 2 wheels above pavement at all times?

Well, I was trying to go for some good times, but with soft tires up front, and medium tires in the rear. The car rotates very easily like that, but is damn near undriveable at high speeds... If you listen carefully you'll hear me brake for the chicane at the end of the course, and again for the T1-T2 esses... turns you should normally just take flat out.

So, my experiement with the tires made the car much more fun to drive, but also made the it a lot slower.

GarySheehan 2006-03-08 09:56 AM

I got a 1:37.499, but I didn't photo the screen during that session. Now I don't know how to get that same screen up (that shows the track, hp, time, etc.). It's saved in the Replay Theater, but it doesn't have that status screen at the end.

cody 2006-03-08 10:02 AM

Can you play the replay and snap a pic of the time at the end? Or better yet, go buy a cheap video capture card so we can see your lap. :)

bemani 2006-03-08 10:24 AM

Just get a snapshot of the record screen (the podium icon)

rallytheshytoutofwrx 2006-03-08 02:24 PM

uhh well io was drifting and if there was a rumble strip i wouldve been on it..not sure if there is? anyways i didnt get a best time so it doesnt matter, but i think rumble strips should be fine. also, like going into the first tunnel, you are able to go inside on the paved stuff right? i took the rules as no grass/sand cutting....like in real racing where you CAN do it but you can't advance a spot, or in this case, count your time..

whast the next one?

The rule is basically "two wheels on the prepared surface at all times". So the curbs are in fair territory, as well as any paved areas adjacent to the track. And because of the two wheel rule, if you cut a curb so deep that the two inside wheels are actually on the dirt, you're lap is still legal because the two outside wheels are still on the prepared surface.

The only exception is when jumping the car. Then it's okay to leave the track, but you must still maintain at least two wheel "over" the prepared surface, even if they're not actually touching the track.

For example, check out my turn 4 in this lap: http://www.seccs.org/gallery/Car%20P...2_1-13-393.wmv

That's about as close as you can cut it.
