Has the Red Bull dominance finally been cracked?

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has suggested that the double title-holding outfit finds itself two months behind its rivals ahead of the opening round in Australia, after enduring a disastrous testing period.
The Milton Keynes-based squad failed to rack up meaningful mileage over the trio of pre-season gatherings, with Renault's new turbocharged power unit proving troublesome and the RB10 suffering from cooling problems.
And during an interview on Red Bull's Servus TV channel, Marko said a massive challenge lies ahead.
"The opening race comes at least two months too early for us. This is a very serious matter," Marko stated.
"At the moment we do not know in what time frame it will be possible to catch up, or if it is possible at all."
Discussing Renault's issues in more detail, Marko said: "We are struggling with turbo lag. You step on the gas, but the power does not arrive. It comes all of a sudden; the wheels spin, the car slides and you lose speed.
"We are working with Renault on the test benches day and night to improve the situation for Melbourne."

Maybe it's all a smokescreen, but if Red Bull is really behind the field, maybe some of the other teams will have a prayer. Certainly in the last few seasons when Ferrari was off the pace at the start, they never recovered in time to win a championship.
Could be really entertaining this season if the top teams get mixed up a bit. I'm a little surprised that Red Bull and Renault would have problems that other teams don't have, considering RB/R's access to money and engineering... you'd think a rule change would actually help them stay ahead of the less funded teams. So maybe it's all bullshit... they're "2 months behind" which means they're only 1 month ahead instead of 3. :lol: |
