Jonny, I'm telling you, if you really want to join look at the Air Force first. I'm not going to pitch anything to you because friends don't do that shit, plus your smart enough to make up your own mind. Go in and destroy the ASVAB then you just may get your pick at any job you want. Don't leave anything to chance though, because that's what I did and now I have a super boring job.

You can pitch all you want. I am trying to get the most views of the armed forces from everyone I can before I decide.

"Essentially" meaning from the insurance's point of view. Call them up and tell them that your car has 400 hp and is rarely driven outside of competitive driving events and see what happens. :p

Also, you suck. $190/month for full coverage just on the miata. Adding a 4x4 as daily will add another $45. :(

Here's the view from the Army...

Join the Air Force instead.

No joke. My brother in law is a Warrant Officer in the Army and he told me, "If the Air Force won't take you don't join."

Kevin M 2006-06-20 12:33 PM

Yeah, and to clarify, I don't think the Army's a bad place to be. What's negative there is pretty much universally negative in the armed forces. But, the good things in the AF outweigh the good things in the Army in my opinion.

JonnydaJibba 2006-06-20 01:10 PM

Hmm, well my main choices as of now then are the Marines or the Air Force. And I really can't see myself as a Marine (but that doesn't mean I won't do it).

Sorry for the hijack! Hopefully the info back from the USAA is good!

Kevin M 2006-06-20 01:21 PM

The only thing being in the Marines really makes you better at is being a Marine. Not that a career in any branch is a bad idea, but you get more options in the other ones. Plus, airmen never get asked to charge machine guns. ;)

But that is one of the main reasons that I would join the Marines, IF I do infact decide to go, to see action. Also the Marines are the farthest thing from anything I have ever done or anything I'm doing now.

Kevin M 2006-06-20 02:01 PM

In that case, go for it. Just try not to get stuck on a ship on nuke duty or something before you enlist. :p

Your brother also thinks i'm a massive stoner, just because someone knows how to roll sushi doesn't mean they can roll a blunt. Has he found out if he is going to Japan?

Its not a bad idea if you don't have a career path in mind, and want to travel for a few years. I was considering it for a while, I took the ASVAB, and scored really well on it I got a 70. I was going to be a Linguists, bcause it had the highest signing bonus, 6k for 4 years, and 11k for 6. I passed the DLAB (Defence Language Aptitude Whatever) and everything, but I don't want to waste 4 years doing something that would get me no where after I got out.

Kevin M 2006-06-20 04:49 PM

Signing bonuses are topping at 6k/11k now? They were higher than that when I enlisted. Then again, GI Bill was like half of what it now is, so it more than balances.

Most positions in the Air Force don't even offer a enlistment bonus. If I recall Tim didn't get a bonus, when he enlisted as a civil engineer, but if he was going to enlist a Sere or what ever that was he would have gotten 4 or 5k.

Kevin M 2006-06-20 05:36 PM

F that Sere crap! I'd rather *actually* be a POW, where they have to follow the laws of the Geneva Convention! Of course, that's kind of the point, but still. Special Forces school is "hard." S.e.r.e. school is "fucking miserable!"

Thanks for reminding me :P

Bob Danger 2006-06-20 06:12 PM

At least you did something, unlike me bumbing around the west coast for the last 3 years, working when I felt like it, and not having any worries... wait that was awesome nevermind.

M3n2c3 2006-06-20 07:22 PM

Oh, and I spent 5 years in, not 4.

Libila 2006-06-21 08:24 AM

Yep, no signing bonus and I was trying out for Pararescue and SERE but I failed the hearing test.

Bad news, the bank said no go on the Type R :(

Kevin M 2006-06-21 08:38 AM

Boo. :( Was it the car they wouldn't finance, or you?

JonnydaJibba 2006-06-21 08:42 AM

Why!? Tell those bitches you'll cut some shit!

Libila 2006-06-21 09:49 AM

It's because I'm a first term Airman, and the car isn't an '06. Those bitches got me all excited because they told me I'm approved for up to $30,000 then I gave them the VIN and they said, "It's a '98? We can only give you money for a new car." I was heart broken.

Kevin M 2006-06-21 09:53 AM

$30,000 will still buy a pretty sweet car over there. What's an STi go for?

Libila 2006-06-21 09:56 AM

30,000 euro

JonnydaJibba 2006-06-21 10:16 AM

WTF?! That's gay, why only new cars?

YOU SHOULD GET AN ARIEL ATOM THEY ARE ONLY 20GS!
