No picture yet, but... 8Gb=$199, 16Gb-$299

On Sale July 11.

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 12:03 PM

Very very tempting.

But, I think I'm still going to wait till nov. so Sprint doesn't ding me an extra $200 for breaking contract.

True fanbois don't value money more than their Thetan level.

Any word on the cost of the plan?

sperry 2008-06-09 12:56 PM

Is the new iPhone any smaller than the old one?

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 01:07 PM

Supposedly a bit smaller, but not as slim as the iPod Touch.

Yeah, I just saw that... it's got "rounded edges". So it'll feel thinner even if it's not.

My current non iPhone bill is around $32 a month including taxes, etc. So it would be more than an extra $10 a month for me to switch.

On the other hand I get no reception anywhere because sprint sucks several bags of dicks (a day), so I guess $60-70 a month for voice, text and data is better than $32 a month for a clock.

I'm paying like $50/month for two phones right now, and I'm not having any issues w/ Sprint coverage... Plus I've got an iTouch already.

It's gonna be hard to pay an extra $50/month just to make calls on my iTouch and browse the 'net via 3G when WiFi isn't available.

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 04:02 PM

Well, the ipod touch software update (to give access to the appstore) and other things is going to cost $10.

At that point, might as well shell out the extra $190 + $50 a month.

$10, or $10/mo? 'Cause $10 is a hell of a lot less than $300 + (24 * $50) = $1500!

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 04:25 PM

$10 one time fee.

+ whatever apps will cost.

Which I'd have to pay for on an iPhone too no doubt.

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 04:45 PM

No, the upgrade is free for the iPhone (apps still cost money).

I figured as much.

Hence the $10 vs $1500 comparison.

tysonK 2008-06-09 06:34 PM

will I be able to get a 2g(or whatever it's called) version for $50, cause that would rock.

As SCB(Seņor Cheap Bastard), I was kinda thinking the same thing... I'd pay $100 for an Edge network 16Gb iPhone and pay the $10 less per month. 8Gbs should be about at Tyson's $50...

This should also drop the value of all used iPods.

Of course you don't have to sign a 2 year contract with an ipod.

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 06:54 PM

Original iPhones are probably not going to be that much cheaper, actually, since most of the 3G functionality (besides the 3G and GPS) will come to them with the software update.

No refurbed OG iPhones on Apples site, and eBay is just full of unlocked ones for $400 or so.

But I would assume you don't have to activate a used iphone, so it becomes a $50 fat iPod Touch if you don't sign a contract, and it likely won't be required to sign for 2 years if you already have the phone.

It may take a while, but unless they do some sort of trade in program and then destroy the old phones, the old ones will flow in quantity into the used market starting late July if not before.

Nick Koan 2008-06-09 08:08 PM

Yeah, but my point is that it'll probably be a trickle. Most people won't need to upgrade because most of the upgrades are software.

And those that trade up due to the gotta-have-it mentality, well they probably don't need to be offloading them for cheap-cheap. Don't forget, a lot of these people shelled out $600 a year ago. They may not be willing to sell it for $50 bucks.

But, I'm sure there will be a few, and if anyone can find them, I'm sure you can Dean :p
