Um... who was holding your foot down on the gas pedal for long periods of time?

I know I'm partial throttle on the straights *all the time* at PDX's. It's only at time trials that I demolish motors.

EGTs can be managed through tune, and overall heat management through simple mods. Besides, given the miles you've put on your car and the way you've pushed it, those temps were obviously not beyond what's acceptable given that you've never had an internal engine issue.

cody 2011-03-17 04:02 PM

You guys don't floor it all the way down the front straight? I thought that was the only way to do it.

@ Kevin. You know one example does not make a significant statistic. I'm just telling you one of the reasons I don't attend more PDX's...I feel like they're harder on my car than autoX. And I definitely will get my EGT gauge fixed before I go to another one, but I'll probably just put it off since I don't feel like it's an issue at autoX.

Ironically, the times you really need a working EGT gauge is for when you're cruising partial throttle up a mild grade on the freeway, not for when you're open-loop at the track/autocross. If you're running lean enough at WOT for the EGT to show it, your tune needs major fixing!

cody 2011-03-17 04:21 PM

Huh, I just remember seeing my EGT's going a little higher at PDX's than they ever go anywhere else. I've been told this is normal and to just keep an eye on it.

Exactly. Typical rule of thumb is 1700F max, but I have suspicions newer Subarus can handle more than that.

Dean 2011-03-17 10:07 PM

Often the reason EGT is a bad indicator is that at WOT when you are at 11:1 or so A/F there is still residual combustion happening in the exhaust especially at higher RPM. All the fuel just doesn't get burned up before the exhaust valve opens.

1700 is not really a worry at 11:11, but 1500 might kill your motor at 14.7:1. I think this was Scott's point about partial throttle high load situations being potentially far worse.

If your oil and water temps are OK and A/F is appropriate for a given load, EGT isn't all that important. Spinning fast but well within their design limits does not hurt motors, lean conditions at medium RPMs under load causing detonation will.

Think of it like pedaling a multispeed bike. You are far more likely to injure yourself straining in a higher gear than moving freely and faster in a lower gear going up a hill.

I never let the RPM's drop below 6K anyway. :P

Could there possibly be anyone on the forum, who hasn't autocrossed yet (and wants to learn)? If so, you should be planning to attend Solo school this Sunday, April 17th at Stead Airport.

More info is on the renoscca.org website.

Who is coming out for test and tune that day?

MattR 2011-04-12 05:00 PM

I'm going to be in Florida this weekend, so I'll miss school and test...

Debbie, are you guys running C stock this year?

k-dogg39 2011-04-12 06:51 PM

Unfortunately I am out of town this weekend as well and won't be making it.

Libila 2011-04-12 07:03 PM

I may go out there with my snow tires still on.

If you plan on using them next season, I wouldn't recommend that.

A1337STI 2011-04-13 08:35 AM

Crap i forgot my auto Xers are pretty beat. i'll have to check for cords maybe they can survive one more day ... hmmm....

WRXlerate 2011-04-13 09:08 AM

Checked on the site and found times but no prices... anyone have any info on that? Maybe I just missed it.
I am a member, the girlfriend is not, I wanted to get her into the solo school and I was planning on the test and tune.

Kevin M 2011-04-13 11:55 AM

$25 for annual members, $40 for weekend members.

I believe test n tune/instructing is free though, no?

Kevin M 2011-04-13 12:29 PM

Test and tune is typically free if you are instructing as well, yes.

Enjoy the sun in FL!
I think we'll run CS/CSL. It should be fun, with you, Timothy M, the Evans...

Good turn out and weather yesterday. I was only snapping pictures but it looked like everything went quite well. I know my friend Derek (blue Miata with roll bar) had nothing but good things to say about the school and the quality of instructing. He especially liked riding with Debbie.

good weather , (lil windy) great people , and a really good turn out of new and long lost auto crossers ! Woot

Yay!! He did great! After having been in the passenger seat on his run, I was questioning his thought about running in novice class this year, he really didn't drive like a newbie. However, after talking with Cory, and Dean, I was reminded of some of the many good reasons that novice class is useful. But in any case, I hope he comes back out to run more events.

cody 2011-04-18 12:43 PM

Nice to see so many fresh faces out there. I'm hoping for better attendance this year. That 2011 WRX 5-door had me drooling after riding through the slalom exercise in it. It feels just as flat and grippy as my car (if not more so) but mine is moded. Looks really good too with the massive fender flares, less chrome, darker wheels/grill mesh, etc. Do want!

He'll be there for the first event. I'll be following him that day with a camera (as creepy as that sounds) for a journalism class project. It's a story/video about how accessible autox is for newbies.

Were you taking pictures of everyone running that day? Just wondering if you ended up with any of my car :)
