That was awesome.

I got a 1'11.182 in my first ten laps and couldn't beat it in the subsequent 42. :?: I have much to learn.

Actually, I can't seem to beat that spin-out lap... I ran a nice clean looking lap, and I'm .5s off the pace. Gotta love GT4's rally engine... I swear, a rally car in GT4, on rally tires, in gravel has less traction than my SVX in real life does on ice.

cody 2006-02-20 10:41 PM

Have you tried a snow track? That shit's even worse.

cody 2006-02-20 11:42 PM

Snow racing is retarded!

Lame. I thought you were talking about just getting crossed up at the finish line. You hit just about everything there was to hit!

Unfortunately, that's not in the rules and double-unfortunately, the only way to enforce it if it was in the rules would be for everyone to submit their videos.

Oh well, looks like I'm going to have to start crashing to get faster laptimes :)

I told you my lap was a mess... I just got lucky that it was kinda fast. I can't seem to go that fast if I intentionally hit stuff, or if I drive clean. I have to *accidentally* hit stuff.

I ran a 1'05.7xx with a "realistically" clean line... so it's not impossible to go fast w/o hitting stuff. It's just way easier to use the edges in some spots... kinda like the WRC guys use the snow banks in Rally Sweden. One corner is especially bad... the long left 5 tightens to 3 after the left 2 into right 2. The "proper" GT4 line is to setup a *massive* drift that slows you down to nearly a stop where you then accelerate out of the tighter corner. The "real" line would be to drive the fast part of the corner "grip", then drift the slow part of the corner. The "fast" line is to just crash into the outside edge of the turn and ride the wall with your foot on the floor.

Also, I had to turn the force feedback on my wheel down to prevent burning out the motor. Being smooth doesn't seem to work for me... I have to saw that wheel like a lumberjack to keep the car pointed the way I want it with my foot on the floor.

Is anyone else starting to hate GT4 rally as much as I do yet? Sure it's fun to go slide around in the dirt, but if you're looking for consistant lap times for competition purposes, GT4 rally is just a bunch of crap.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-21 11:42 AM

I like Tahiti Maze.

GarySheehan 2006-02-21 11:46 AM

It's less consistant because you're sliding so much. I'm pretty sure my lap is clean. I'll see if I can videotape it.

Well, since I know the "new school" (Petter Solberg/Seb Loeb) style of rally driving is to reduce drifiting as much as possible, I gave that a major effort... but I'm just faster sliding a lot. I was guessing that the GT4 people made the cars slide way too much for a reason, they want you to drift. So, I've been trying to drive the way the game is programmed, not the way real life works.

Like that long tightening sweeper I mentioned earlier. Driving the realistic line is just slow compared to hanging the back way out... and really slow compared to just bouncing off stuff.

Hey I use GT to pratice for rallycross, I don't know what driving on snow is like, but I like GT's sim on dirt. I have to say the feeling of the transition between the dirt and pavement is pretty good too (like Cathedral Trail 1 or Tahiti Maze). Maybe you're just taking advantage of the collision behavior too much.
Anyway I haven't done any laps since trying those few laps last week, and probably won't have time to do any tonight either. Playing GT4 is major effort since I have to drag the WRX seat out of the closet and clamp the steering wheel down and go through the whole production. I don't have a convient setup like Gary does :(

cody 2006-02-21 03:32 PM

My setup is very convenient. I hold the stearing wheel between my legs and but the pedals up against my coffee table while I sit on the couch. Can you say GHETTO?

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-21 03:55 PM

Mine is too, I reach into my drawer and pull out a controller! I do wish I had a wheel though.

My DS2 time is better than the wheel ... 1'05.577.

Of course it is... the wheel sucks for rally... you can't turn it fast enough, and I'm not good enough to not have to correct quickly. I'm gonna lose 10 lbs with all the exercise this challenge is generating... and break my wheel!

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-21 08:36 PM

Haha be easy.

cody 2006-02-21 08:36 PM

Seriously. My wheel sounds like it's destroying itself. Part of me wishes it would so I could get a better one.

bemani 2006-02-21 09:03 PM

They all do that, just let it do its job, its not going to die on you.

cody 2006-02-21 09:28 PM

damn. :p

Well, I'm down to 1'07.395. Two hours to go.

cody 2006-02-21 10:00 PM

1'05.844 Getting somewhere finally.

Okay... ran a little cleaner lap... but I'm still bouncing off stuff.

sperry 2006-02-21 10:37 PM

One hour to go.... who's gonna snipe the win? I certainly don't deserve it w/ my messy-ass laps.... but I'll certainly take it so I can pick something fun next.

Hate to do this to all of you still running laps:

cody 2006-02-21 10:51 PM

Bastard! :P

cody 2006-02-21 11:33 PM

Congrats Scott! I can't wait to see that 1'04.

I'm going to bed. I hope to update the first post tomorrow night, but I'm boarding all day and working all night so we'll see.
