So now we are too lazy to play video games, we have to watch other people do so on YouTube? Could somebody please hit the "Submit Reply" button for me?

I'm going to have to remember that quote the next time you post some in-car footage.

Go ahead.

I'd watch a real drummer playing real drums which requires both hands and both feet and much more complex patterns and rhythms thank you very much. The drum set doesn't even have to be bolted to a tilting and rotating stage. :)

And from the bit I watched, he couldn't even keep up with the fast part on a single "drum".

I'm getting tired from all this replying. I think I'll take a before bed nap.

Nick Koan 2007-12-02 11:17 PM

Actually Dean, that is the point of the video. That guy *is* a real drummer playing on his lazy fake drums instead of his real ones.

The drum setup for the game is by far the closest to its real counterpart compared with other peripherals typically found in rhythm games. To be good at the game takes almost the same skills as a "real drummer playing real drums." True, there is only one foot pedal for the kick, and the tom pads alternate with the hi-hat and crash as necessary, but a lot of "real drummers" are commenting on how well this setup actually mimics simple drum kits.

My point is that watching someone play a set of practice pads attached to a TV set is not my idea of entertainment, much less a low quality web video of said activity.

Huh? Never claimed I could do it. The fact that we are watching a video of someone playing a fake set of drums attached to a video game instead of a real drummer playing real drums is just sad.

They really should make a South Park episode about it.

100_Percent_Juice 2007-12-03 12:09 AM

I guess some people just don't understand. Let me explain. Dean, its like when you watch dancing with the stars. You could sit there and say "my gosh, why am I watching these n00bs try to do this dance." But you don't. Why? Because its pretty cool when you see average joe exhibit some form of ability when trying something that you know is hard. Being able to pound some drums to the rythm of flashing/streaming dots on a screen without falling over and having a seizure is pretty cool. IMO

Maybe its just me and my friend youth.

Should I help Dean out and add everyone to his ignore list? That way he'll be assured that he won't accidentally come across anything that isn't up to his standards.

Hey Dean, since you've never played the game, you don't exactly have any basis for understanding the level of skill exhibited. Plainly and simply, that guy is showing off his drumming skill just as well as if he were playing the song on a real set of drums. Like Nick said, the drumming side of that game is the most realistic aspect of it... i.e. that game's hard, and the guy's got talent. If you don't care, you're not his target audience. I know, it's hard to believe, but the whole internet isn't being written specifically for you.

Plus, with all the insane waste of time things on the internet this is the one that's "sad", this is the one that demonstrates the end of society? "OMG he's playing fake drums and posting video of it on the internet!!! WAHHH, WAHHH". No one bitches about your 600 minutes per weekend of in-car track footage you post up, as if lap 40 is somehow so different from lap 20 that we should be falling over ourselves and complaining to our ISP's "dear god you have to get me more bandwidth, I have to see what happens next on Dean's in car... I mean I know I just watched him drive around that track 28 times, but the 29th time something might actually happen!".

Really, if that video wasn't "cool" enough to pass your almighty bar of worthiness, just hit the little "X" on the window and go back to downloading crap on bittorrent that does entertain you. At the very least, spare us the sob story about how you felt like you wasted a whole 20 seconds of your valuable time. Sheesh.

Wow, post an dissenting opinion on a You Tube video about a popular video game with indirect sarcastic commentary on the sorry state of Music literacy and physical education in this country and you get threatened to be disavowed by the board and it's owner/moderator...

People comment on $4!+ in this thread all the time. Perhaps I was more out of line than I thought. Nick, I apologize I offended you in some way, that was not my intent.

It was also not my intent to disparage what is clearly the greatest video game of all time.

I hope that I am wrong and that video games of this type might actually entice people to take up actual musical instruments and heaven forbid real sports like tennis, golf and bowling, but the track record is not good.

We are now one of if not the fattest, laziest, and lacking in the "arts" counties in the civilized world and at least some of that can be attributed to video games IMHO.

P.S. 100_Percent_Juice watches 'Dancing with the stars"

Next time you get a chance, play Guitar Hero or Rock Band. It's not "the same" as playing a real instrument (i.e. you could totally rule at Guitar Hero and not be able to play a single chord on a real guitar) but it does require a similar skill set of dexterity and rhythm. As far as video games with real-world redeeming value, it's pretty much at the top of the list... which should have been obvious watching that guy playing the eDrums in that movie.

When Rednecks get really drunk there are usually two results: Someone gets shot or a crappy car goes off a man made jump. The camera man is as funny as the jump.

That was pretty impressive for backyard engineering. He missed the landing ramp, but I was sure when it started it was going to be an ugly mess of metal at the end and it wasn't.

That is probably what they are.

I remember seeing what I thought were hollow wooden percussion instruments that looked like slightly square PacMen heads. I thought that might have been what the sound was coming from. Now that I think about it though, there were few of those of different sizes and they were setup like a drum set sort of.
