Not even a gravel track can stop Scott from winning?

sperry 2006-02-21 11:51 PM

You guys are going to *hate* my 1'04 lap... but it proves my point about the realism of GT4's rally...

I'll have the movie, and a new challenge up shortly.

bemani 2006-02-21 11:59 PM

What did you do, wall ride?

Apparently, braking is not the fast way through the 1st turn. :(

That's true for a lot of turns in GT4, not just rally tracks.

sperry 2006-02-22 01:43 AM

Okay, here's the video from my fast lap... don't hate me too much for my borderline driving.

Now, onto the next challenge!

(You had to know it was coming...)

Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca
RE Amemiya Asparadrink RX-7 (JGTC) '04 (it's one of the JDM tuner cars)

Both the car and track are available w/o unlocking anything. This challenge should run a lot like the 1st challenge at Sears Point. Laps should be in the 1'15 to 1'20 range.

sperry 2006-02-22 02:05 AM

Oh, and one more thing. I compiled my exteral camera replays for TT1-TT5 into a 100MB movie if anyone wants to check it out the 1st 5 challenges.

You have much time on your hands. Much.

Um, the video capture takes as long as watching the replay. Then I drag and drop them into that crappy Windows Movie Maker, and then drop an mp3 on there for audio.

The longest part is waiting for it to upload to the server... and that takes about 10 times longer than making it!

Is there any way to save the replay of just your fastest lap? When I save replay, it saves the whole session.

Scott,

Watched your lap. That's shameful!!!! However, I will say that was the nicest execution of the 2nd gear hairpin after the esses that I could imagine. That was sweet! I still can't use the e-brake to my advantage.

How about we add a rule that you can't use walls or obstacles to assist with you're laptime. Essentially the top guys will be on the honor system.

It takes all the fun out of the game for me if I know that I've got to find ways to "cheat" physics to get a fast lap.

I just assumed that no wall riding is the standard rule along like keeping your wheels on pavement. Serve me right for not reading! Finding loopholes in rules, now that's racing!

Gary, I think the 6th icon is the one to save fastest lap. I don't really know though, my copy only has 1 save option.

There's 2 options. One saves the replay, then the one further to the right saves the fastest lap ghost replay. However, I've never been able to see a replay of the ghost. I always have to race against it to see it. Is this something that shows up in Replay Theater? I thought it wasn't.

I think you watch it in replay theatre, I'm not sure, I never watch it.

GarySheehan 2006-02-22 07:48 PM

I don't think it asks to save a file name with it...

Well I'm out!

sperry 2006-02-22 09:48 PM

Gary, that save ghost option does save a replay that can be viewed in the replay theater. That's how I save and play mine.

And yes, my lap is shameful. Though, in my defence the really bad use of the wall (1st turn) put me about .1s ahead of my ghost lap. It was the e-brake turn through the switch back that shaved off nearly a second... something I probably couldn't duplicate in 200 attempts. Which is the big problem I have with GT4 rally... a fast lap seems to have too much to do with luck... and a bad lap with egregious mistakes (like crashing into walls) can be just as fast as a beautiful lap. In the non-rally courses, it's nearly impossible that a mistake can result in a faster lap. In rally it seems to happen all the time.

With regards to a wall riding rule... I think it's unecessary. The current 2 tires on track rule will pretty much prevent people from wall riding on most tracks, cept maybe Monaco, but I guarentee youu it's faster to stay off the walls there than to try and ride them. The only place it's really useful is in the rally, and making it a rule will really invalidate a lot of laps due to accidental contact.

bemani 2006-02-23 02:00 PM

I think no wall riding should be explicitly stated. If contacting a wall causes you to have the fastest time, then maybe it is reasonable to say that lap should be invalid.

Anyway, we don't have to worry about that on this track. Low 19s for LSIR. My game has a bug, it will randomly not record the fastest lap for the ghost on LSIR.

Bemani, I hate rules that punish the honest and reward the dishonest. I agree with you that wall riding should be discouraged, but unless we require videos (which would make it hard for most people to win), a rule like that is hard to enforce. I know we're already on the honor system with regard to the no shortcuts rule though. I guess it's really the same. Whatever you guys want to do, but my suggestion is that you ask the rule maker to clarify if there's any question as to the specific rules for a challenge. The fewer hard-to-enforce rules, the better IMO.

First post updated (finally).

 I think a 1'17 will probably win it... I think my best time right now is like a 1'18.9 or so, but I only ran 15 - 20 laps to get there.

So far I've found the biggest place to make up time is T4. If you can get the car to turn in and get back on the throttle just right, you can take that corner nearly flat out... which make a *huge* difference down the straight between T4 and T5... but you gotta time the turn in just right to put the car on the apex and run-out curbs... too early or late and you're in the dirt and it's a wasted lap.

Whew! You scared the shit outta me when you said "1:15-1:20"!

I've taken T4 completely flat. It was beautiful. I can't find the turn in point again though.
