If the kart doesn't come into play in the next couple of weeks it looks like...
...it may be time to trim the fenders back and run some fender flares like on the GST race car. How wide do you all think I can go with the trimming of the metal?:D |

These are flares: http://www.gstmotorsports.com/home/i...TA_largev2.jpg Specifically, they're flares for an IS300 (IIRC) that Mike had to have worked on by his bodyshop guy to make 'em work on the RS coupe. There's nothing like that out there for the 4-door Impreza. Also, that guy's widebody isn't a kit... it's a one off, hand made, DIY fiberglass project. So, like I said, you're not going to be able to find an easy way to cut the fenders and tack on some flares... and it's unlikely we'll see a kit any time soon, since the rear door on the WRX is so close to the fender. 'Course if someone does come up with something, I'll be ordering it the day it comes out. 255 Sport Cups on 17x9+43 wheels rubs on both the inside and the outside of the fenders... I have quite literally run out of room for tire... I would kill to run some 17x9.5+20's outside the stock fenders. |
I really hope you don't get more wheels, becuase then I have to buy one of your old sets :p

That's an L... not that it matters. Less baloney to deal with on an L though if you are building a race car.

Only a matter of time. |
So I found a DEAL on some 215-55-17's snow tires that I'd like to put on my 2005 legacy. The stock size tire is 215-45-17 which would mean the diameter will be 1.69 inches greater than stock. Aside from potential rubbing (looks like it would be minimal at steering limit) and a slow speedo reading, what other downsides might there be?

I'm considering going with some oversized tires on my next set of winters for the SVX (225/60-16 vs 225/50-16) which is approximately the same size larger (1.6" larger diameter). I figure, if people can cram 255's under there and lower the car, a taller snow tire should fit w/o rubbing. |

I'm thinking of selling all 10 of my 17X7.5 rims and using the money to buy these: http://www.tirerack.com/images/wheel...e_mb_ci3_l.jpg 17x8 $288 (each) Offset: 45mm Backspacing: 6.25" Bolt Pattern: 5-100 Rec. Tire Size: 225/45-17 Weight: 15.0lbs. http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...All&sort=Brand But Alex is trying to talk me into getting some 16X8's. The only options I've found in that size are heavy, ugly Rota Slipstreams (though they do come in black and they're cheap) and Volks $$$$$$$$$$$$ |
Cody, stick to 17s. Unless you're going to R compounds you're better off with the tire options on a 17x8.
|
I'd run these:
Hankook Ventus R-S2 (Extreme Performance Summer) Size: 245/45ZR16 Serv. Desc: 94W Load Index 94 = 1477lbs (670kg) per tire Speed Rating “W” = 168mph (270kph) UTQG: Treadwear: 200 Traction: AA Temperature: A200 AA A Price: $113.00 (each) Estimated Availability: In Stock http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...=1&RunFlat=All |
The RS-2s are second-tier autocross street tires IMO. You'll definitely miss the RE-01Rs.
|
Yah, I guess going through all of the trouble just to fit wider tires (and have better acceleration) isn't really worthwhile if I lose grip.
I really want those 17x8 Traklites anyway. |

Bringing back a thread from the dead!!
I have 255 Azenis in my garage that were on the STi when I got it from Pete. I would like to run them in the summer and was going to pick up a set of wheels. From what I have read I need a 17x8.5 to a 17x9 wheel...but what offset to not rub? The car is dropped on RCE Yellow's. |
Your stock 17x8s are fine for those tires.
|
Yeah, I know the BBS's work well with them, but it's kind of a pain for me to be swapping tires on and off wheels, I liked having a second set. Plus I really wanted to do something about the paint on the stockers, they have taken quite a bit of abuse and could use new paint or even a powdercoating.
|
So pick up a second set of stockers, or something cheap and good like RPF1s or OZ Ultraleggeras. 17x8 is perfectly fine.
|
Okay cool thanks, I was leaning toward a set of black RPF1's.
