So tell it in sequence.... The SUV driver was a jerk, but like so many of us, you got sucked into his black hole of reaction not reason...

Debbie vs. the SUV

Dean and I stopped in Ashland for fuel (a deal, for 92 octane, $2.04/gal, mini-serve). When we re-entered the fwy, an SUV is in the left lane slightly in front of Dean, and blocking progress in the fast lane. This goes on for a ways, which started my annoyed fuse. (I already don't like being behind SUV's with tinted rear windows, and those who drive slow in the fast lane really push my Mad button.)

Dean, chirp in here if you remember why, but for whatever reason, maybe because Dean was going to be able to get around traffic and pass him on the right, all of the sudden he found his gas pedal and goes. Gone. Jerk.

For awhile, Dean and I are briskly cruising along and enjoying the views, when we catch traffic where the fwy becomes more twisty and hilly. In both lanes there are several motorhomes, and haulers from the drag race in Seattle, and normal people in normal cars driving normally. The Jerk was in this traffic as well. We play leap frog a few times thru the twisties, with the Jerk agressively inserting himself in openings where he shouldn't have tried. Well, here's where I really got sucked in. I took it upon myself to show him how team players play. I saw an opening in the fast lane, and zoomed past Dean as well as the Jerk to get in front. Shortly, there was more slow traffic and I radio'd to Dean to speed up and box out the Jerk. Too late for my transmission, I didn't give Dean enough time, and the Jerk again wedged himself right in behind me.

At this point I considered the Jerk to be a menace to mankind and especially to myself, so I sped up to make space behind me. (There is still traffic on my right so I stayed left.) Jerk-Ass speeds up as well and gets right on my bumper, going like 80+mph at the crest of a hill, right before a turn. Brake check. He turns into a F****R. At least in my mind. Next thing I know, he is like 15' off my rear bumper and Dean is telling me over the radio to stop doing what I'm doing, and get away. The red mist of death finally lifts, and I speed up, blink to get right, and start merging lanes. F8888R blazes even faster and starts merging with me! I didn't have time to look, but I'm guessing he's now going 90mph and maybe 10' off of me on my left. He tried to run me off the road, and he is A F****R! :x :x :x There are not enough mads to express how I felt!
I put on the chase for maybe a mile with my hand on my horn the entire way. Many curses flying into the radio back at Dean. It probably took me another half mile to come back to normal highway speeds. For the next hour, I drove normal and let Dean take the lead again, but all the while I was burning about this, and vowing that if I saw him on the road again, I was going to get his license plate and report him to the highway patrol. Nevermind that this all happened in Oregon, and we were all now many miles into California. I looked & looked but I never saw him after that. Just as well.

At least I'm not dead, or in the hospital, or in jail. In retrospect, this was a very very bad thing to have done. It was also a very very bad thing to do to all those other drivers around me. I learned my lesson big time.
(Have coins and slimy burritos ready to heave .... )

j/k on that last part.

Thanks for the story Debbie. That guy was a tool, and if it happened as you tell it, you didn't really antagonize the SUV. Hell, they shouldn't even be in the left lane except to pass larger, slower vehicles, but for some reason, SUV owners thing they're all Derek Bell behind the wheel of a Porsche 959.

If I had an SUV go insane like that on me and follow me into the slow lane to keep tailgating me... they would have learned that 60-0 in 130ft is a lot faster than 60-0 in 220ft. And if I survive the impact I probably would have gotten out of the car and beat the shit out of the driver. Jeez, you moved over to let him by and attempt to avoid a more unsafe condition and that guy insisted on making it worse! Idiot!

I can only hope that drivers like that only kill themselves when their luck runs out. :x

BTW: I read about a great manuver for these situations on NASIOC... take out your cell phone, hold it up to the driver of the SUV and show him as you dial 911. Pretend to press "SEND", then have a nice heated mock-discussion with the local police about the bad driver that's trying to kill you. And if they don't back off, press SEND for real.

Good tell.. You forgot this emoticon :furious:

Most of what Debbie says is the way I saw it as well, except I'm pretty sure she is over estimating some of the distances by 5 feet or so...

I swear he was on top of her headed down the hill, 5 feet tops at 80+ for quite a while(We all make space changing lanes at times, but the distances seldom stay that small for very long)... And when he swerved into her lane basically on top of her after she pulled over, I swear they missed by inches, and all she had was guard rail, and a significant drop to her right...

Now I will follow people I know and who know me with only 5', sometimes less between us on a track at 80 under controlled conditions, but that is about it. This was some scarry $4!+ from my perspective.

There is nothing more dangerous than menace in a 3+ ton SUV, and from my perspective Debbie was playing a game she could not possibly win.

I am just very happy that everything turned out OK...

Oh, and this was about the same time as we came accross the Pickup truck with the yellow nylon rope dragging behind it... I think Debbie said she was glad it didn't have a dog attached, and I in my warped and dark sense of humor said "anymore..."

Yes, that was funny and made me laugh; until I thought about it.

Dean 2004-07-30 12:43 PM

Are we out of Bremerton stories? We kind of talked about the R32. Basically, they are fast, and this one was mostly stock...

Oh, and the Infinity... Gotta go see which model it was... More later...

Oh, and the missing keys, but there is no end to that story... at the moment.

I must admit, we came around a turn and saw flashing lights, and this was in my mind. It turned out to be a car pulled over on the opposite side of the fwy.

Sounds like good advice from nasioc on the cellphone maneuver.

Oh man, that was priceless.... I don't remember exactly how it started, because I was just talking... Do you?

Good point, I forgot about yours... Debbie's entire premise at one point was that there were none, after I had mentioned that one with green decals was running in Phase one while we were in phase 2 or 3... I think it may be one of those you had to be theres for it to be funny though...

Coupe or Sedan? There's a huge difference.. one's a boring 4 door, the other's basically a 350Z with "back seats" (aka, cloth and foam to lower your insurance rate).

How did you honk the horn, use the radio and steer at the same time? :P

Seriously though I'm glad no one (even asshat suv boy) got hurt.

Dean 2004-07-30 01:12 PM

Sorry boys, G35 sedan.... with only Konis & springs as upgrades... Not sure if it was AWD... The thing was quite fast on 245 MXs.

Dude, she can't tell you that, she would have to kill you first... She is a woman, she can do all the stuff we thought up in the cops are out today thread plus balance her checkbook all at the same time. A little radio while steering, and honking tain't no big thang...

People used to do that to me all the time. The cops never do shit. No offense Debbie but that's a weak road rage story, that was like a daily occurance for me for a few years. :P

The cops don't necessarily do anything, but the driver of the SUV doesn't know that. The goal is to get them to back off without having to escilate the situation further. Plus if you really call 911, you might have rescue vehicles enroute faster if you get crashed out while you're on the phone w/ the operator.
