I am very glad to hear that you already fired it up, and it ran right! I was a bit of a pain, with our "timing marks" (buy some white-out dude!) but I was pretty confident that we had it correct when I went home last night.

This thread was moved? :P Just found it.

Keep us updated Scott.

Would one of those right angle drill adapters have helped?

Perhaps... but I'm not sure I'd be willing to drill into the block w/ one of those simply due to the high chance of messing it up due to lack of bit control.

Did you get the UP in Scott?

You handled the situation IMHO the "right" way, drilling into a block or a head is not really a good idea unless it is a controlled environment, who knows if there is a water passag 1/64" past the end of the current bolt hole. Always scared me doing that type of stuff.

I believe they have medication for problems like this now Scott, so no need to be ashamed... :D

We wouln't have been going any deeper into the block... just opening up the hole so we could re-tap it for a larger bolt.

You hope. Unless you can remove the part, set it on a bench or in a vise and drill it out, it just makes me nervous doing that. I remember changing an exhaust manifold on a 460 ford motor, one of the studs stripped out the block, and I was sooooo nervous about drilling into a water passage. Glad you got something to work though.

So the up-pipe is off.... I cut the braided steel out of the way to see the leak.

Nice eh? What's scary is that all the bits that came off that pipe had to go through the turbo, 'cause they weren't in the braiding.

MattR 2006-05-12 04:59 PM

Holy Crap, I've never seen that before....It's all bombed out and depleted.

Nick Koan 2006-05-12 06:38 PM

That hole isn't that big. Did you find a replacement pipe yet?

You might be ok. I've heard of guys that have their EGT probe break and fall through their turbo and have everything be ok. But, that's a lucky draw.

JonnydaJibba 2006-05-15 07:30 AM

Damn, talk about high maintenance. Hope it's not fucked up.

sperry 2006-05-15 08:43 AM

The turbo seems okay, at least for now... I guess there's a chance it's been damaged so it'll just have a shorter lifespan, but for now the car is running.

So SubyDude didn't bother to tell me when I was ordering my Bosal up-pipe w/ "overnight must have it by next weekend for my race" shipping that they were back ordered for months. When they finally figured out the situation, it was unfortunately Friday which meant no way I was getting a pipe before Saturday. But nonetheless, SubyDude upgraded me to a Perrin solid up-pipe at cost and shipped it Saturday delivery! So I co-drove Eric's car on Saturday, and installed the new pipe Saturday night.

I've gotta say, that Perrin up-pipe is a work of art. Polished stainless steel, PERRIN logo plaque welded to it. Gorgeous machined flanges. I didn't think a 10 inch long piece of bent pipe could be worth over $200, but I gotta say, the Perrin looks like it is. So I took my time installing it to make sure to tighten everything evenly to prevent leaks (since it's a non-flex I was really nervous). I used the new gaskest SubyDude provided and grabbed some new grade-8 bolts from Home Depot to make sure I could torque the uppipe-header joint properly.

I drove around Saturday night, and raced the car on Sunday, and so far it doesn't seem like it's leaking. Hopefully it'll handle the high-heat of the track. I'm actually mostly worried about the header/motor gaskets, since they've got stains like they've been leaking a bit, and they're pretty old. I'm actually thinking that I may have had a small leak between the header and motor that ended up causing all my melted bits on the passenger side of the motor and that it wasn't necessarily the skid plate... hrmmm.

Did it fix your boost problem?

Of course! There was nothing wrong w/ the car other than that exhaust leak.

A1337STI 2006-05-16 01:33 PM

Do you still have that skid plate FS BTW?

*edit* seem to recall Cody telling me Ed bought it . A day late and a dollar short !

sperry 2006-05-16 02:13 PM

The skid plate was sold to Ed. Cody picked it up from my place last night.
