Ding Ding Ding...Austin wins. This is the absolute right answer.

So what you are saying is you want to reduce the hot air behind the steering wheel? Got it. :)

And after all, that $3 is about 1/50th of a track day. Just think, if you hadn't spent that, you would be that much closer to more track time... ;)

While I agree with Austin, most of us have spent some money on some silly little mod; be it a gear shift knob, grounding kit, drop in filter, fancy battery & billet hold down, carbon fiber something, window tint, lug nuts, etc all of which have little if any measurable benefit. But for the most part, we like them, and are glad we did them, or a least won't admit we aren't.

Let Alex have his $3 CAI mod.

It's a short ram. :P

Kevin M 2006-06-01 07:29 AM

It's only a model.

JonnydaJibba 2006-06-01 07:45 AM

Well think of it this way; the $3.50 wasn't wasted. It was used to buy materials for a science experiment to find out that a cardboard heat shield doesn't work as good as one would think. But I don't think I'd need to spend treefiddy to figure that out.

Alex, you wouldn't happen to be a Loch Ness monster would you?

How about whether it would show up as extending the life of certain parts?

(That's right: go ahead & blast away. I'll be gone for the weekend, so I won't have to read the snide comments back about my question. :) )

That's kinda what I was thinking! Of COURSE, any other benefits are HIGHLY debatable, but if it helps keep the air filter from being at frightening temperatures, thus *likely* reducing it's usable life, then it's "tree-fiddy" well spent in my book!

You're saying the air filter will "wear out" faster at a higher temperature?

Also, what's a "frightening" temperature? I was pretty scared when I saw 1950*F on my EGT's... I guess I'd be scared if my air filter was at nearly 2000 degrees, but anywhere south of 200... not so much.

cody 2006-06-01 09:51 AM

1950!?!?

khail19 2006-06-01 11:12 AM

Someone move this thread out of Tech and into the Imaginary Power Mods That May Or May Not Have Other Benefits section please. Unless we have a Loch Ness Monster section, then put it there.

Now, you can't "read into" anything that I didn't say myself! :P ALEX said that it worried HIM that his air filter was so hot to the touch. If it makes him worry about the situation less for the affore mentioned 3.50, right on!

And yes, the "life" of an air filter being affected by heat is yet another topic with about a million variables, i.e. what kind of filter, how much heat, duration of exposure, but again, if it gives a bit of peace of mind, go for it!

A1337STI 2006-06-01 03:57 PM

I wouldn't use cardboard for a heat shield, What am i some kind of low budget modder? its metal, the air deflector is card board.:)

I've never tried the dry ice thing, but i still think it sounds cool. (get it ? :P)

and there is no such thing as the Loch Ness Monster ... Now Tahoe Tessie on the other hand ...

rubberbiscuitt 2006-06-02 06:38 AM

how about the socks and tin foil?

A1337STI 2006-06-02 11:23 AM

I Almost put those in place last night , I'll put that on my 2 do list for today
