Intermediate group is almost full... Still a bunch of room in novice and advanced groups.

Ton of track time at a reasonable price... You need to be there...

sperry 2008-05-05 01:55 PM

It's unlikely I'll have a running car by then, but if I do I'll be there. Hell, I'll even use the weekend to break in the motor if I can get it running in time.

Or better yet, if someone buys the WRX, I'll bring a friggen brand new STi to the track on some race tires.

Bonster 2008-05-05 02:04 PM

This is an unusual opportunity for new drivers to the track. There are only five novices each day! So if you are a novice and want a clear track, here's your chance. Besides, if we don't get more novices, our instructors will wind up goofing off all day. ;) Advanced, as Dean already mentioned, is also pretty empty (but not empty enough to combine them with the intermediates), so no worries signing up a little later, Scott. I doubt we'll fill. We sure are doing a lot better this year than in years past! This is awesome!

I hope you die from super-aids:furious:

I heard that. :) Nothing worse than bored instructors. Next thing you know, the intermediates and advanced drivers are learning something. ;)

Well, if I end up with a running car that still needs to be broken-in (i.e. I'll be out there with a 4000 rpm red line and no boost), should I run in the novice group to stay out of the way of the advanced cars? Or should I run in advanced so I can give novices rides, since all I can do with 80 hp is putt around demoing the line?

You could just go out there and run the "Corvette" line  like you-know-who and fuck everyones day up.

Dean 2008-05-05 03:00 PM

I think you could manage the Miata line at those power levels. :)

I can understand turning down the boost, but that seems very low for RPM. I would think you want almost the full RPM range to make sure the full length of the bore gets ring break in.

The stroke magically changes between 4-7k?

Basic physics... Just like bolts stretch so do rods, and other parts deflect and tolerances are taken up as oil films are squeezed even if by thousandths of an inch. Also, the final hone on cylinders is much finer than the rough hone of the past. Rings must be pushed into this hone before it gets knocked down to much.

There are plenty of references out there for modern engines that say the classic slow break in is dead. Run it at mixed RPMs at mixed power levels early is what I read from people in the know today.

We should probably move this out of Bonnie's thread.

Well... considering I'm 0/2 on motors that have had a "race break-in", I think a nice leisurely 1000-2000 miles at <4000 rpm seems like a better idea.

That said, (and back on topic) what group should I be running in, if I'm going to end up being a moving pylon out there for the fast cars? I've got no problem running off line in the advanced group to let folks pass anywhere on track, which is something I couldn't do in the novice group, so I'm thinking even if I'm off pace I'll have more fun in the advanced group as well as be less in the way.

Or I can just not come unless the motor's up to full song, but I'm guessing that Bonnie would rather have me than not even if my car's slow.

Dean 2008-05-05 04:10 PM

Can't speak for Bonnie, but given current levels, sign up for both groups and break in twice as fast. ;)

Seriously, at these levels in those groups, I bet we can make it work.

Well, it turns out my sister has decided to throw herself a graduation party that weekend. So it doesn't look like I'm making it regardless, unless I go the route of being a huge asshole and skip the party.

Bonster 2008-05-06 02:23 PM

She's throwing a grad party ALL weekend??? ALL day and night? Lol. You're only about a half hour from the track, can't you sneak out? "Hey sis, I'll be back in a little bit . . . I have to water my lawn." Wait . . . do Reno residents have lawns? Lol. Anyway, as far as the other stuff in this thread . . .

Dean . . . I have no problem with folks going off-topic when they are talking about cool engine stuff. I have learned more on these car forums over the years than any other resource.

Scott . . . don't go off your line to allow passing unless you fear that you are about to trade paint (with perhaps, say, and out of control vehicle). With the issue of your motor at hand, I would in fact suggest novice group as it is so light. Just make sure you start out in the front of the paddock or you might get bored to death waiting for the next passing zone. ;)

sperry 2008-05-06 02:26 PM

My sister lives in Sacramento... so I'll be out of town. :(

Bonster 2008-05-06 02:31 PM

Oh, that stinks Scott. Lol. Yeah, looks like we'll have to wait until next time. Or maybe . . . here's an idea . . . hold a party of your own for your sister . . . then she won't get mad if you don't show up to the one she's throwing. :D

Dean 2008-05-24 04:21 PM

Well, day 1 was good and bad... We had light rain on and off early in the AM which was fun and kept the hot dogs in check. Dried up for the last sessions of the morning and first sessions of the afternoon and then it opened up on us. BB size hail and a full blown thunder and lightning downpour that shut us down an then eventually caused mud rivers to shut us down for the day. :(

I think we turned out even with 4 of our 6 sessions for all groups. They should be able to get it cleared up by tomorrow if the weather behaves.

I got 1 wet and 1 dry session

Dean 2008-05-25 05:40 PM

Today was great. We started with just a little light rain and progressed to drying and dry conditions through the first two set of sessions and were dry all afternoon...

You guys messed a great event.

Bonni, thanks for all your work.

I wish my car and wallet were up to it, Sounds like Monaco yesterday. 'Sucks I had to mess it:) .

Sunday was indeed a great day, warming up the first sessions on a wet-damp track really helped in getting smooth for the rest of the day. This weekend was my first track experiance driving in the rain and I have to say, other than the gully washer that ended our day on Saturday, that I really enjoyed the opportunity. I guess I'll shop for some windshield wipers to carry with my race cache.

Dean, thanks for the dry trailer on Saturday and the tip on the sunset strip on Sunday. I got down to a 3 min 16 sec lap yesterday.

Bonni, as usual, kept things moving and upbeat. She is going to re-think her decision to hold this event on the same weekend as Hawthorne, the Reno gang of Subarus was missed by many.
