I'd worry more about the insurance coverage than running a special timed race... I vote for more open track time.

Awesome! Glad you're coming out!

doubleurx 2004-07-24 09:19 PM

Either option is OK by me. Looking forward to it either way.

sperry 2004-07-26 01:46 PM

Okay... we've got less than a month before we need to pay in full for the track day!

I am setting Thursday, August 12th as the deadline for payment. If you pay after August 12th, there will be a $20 late fee! Also, we will also not be able to accept any new registrations after August 21st, because we need time to pull any PayPal funds out of our account and it can take 3 to 4 days.

Please get your payments in ASAP. Also, we're still looking for a few more drivers to meet the 30 participant goal. We need 30 people in order to rent out the track!! If you know anyone that might be interested, please pass along the word!

MikeK 2004-07-26 02:14 PM

I vote for no relay race, and more open track time.

Oh wait, it isn't a vote ...

sperry 2004-07-26 02:20 PM

I just sent an email off to the track requesting they reschedule the relay portions as open track time. :)

sperry 2004-08-02 09:01 AM

Lets than two weeks to sign/pay up before the $20 late fees apply! Please, if you haven't paid yet, pay this week and avoid late fees!

Don't stress the 6 mo old rule too much... that's just a good rule of thumb to determine if there's water in the fluid that will boil at track temps. In fact, if you run an agressive fluid, or race a lot, 6 mo. old is probably too old!

How about, "I dont think this fluid has been changed since I got the car"

 You should probably do it then. It's not a big operation... just get a bucket, a tube, a wrench, some fluid and a friend, and go to town. Takes me about 30 minutes, unless we've got milkshakes and Speed Channel on.

No, more than 1 friend, means you spend more time BSing and screwing around making runs to Del Taco than actually bleeding the brakes. The last time I bled my brakes, it took like 3 hours, and ended with me and JC standing around in the garage till like 2am talking!

MattR 2004-08-02 12:35 PM

I'd like to set up a pre inspection point the day prior, I'll provide details soon. Also, racerswholesale.com sometimes has really good prices on clearance helmets...I think that's their url?...

I was figuring on just gloves and helmet. I assume that should be fine for an instruction day????

Thanks for any input.

Also should I get my tech inspection before the day, or do they require it to be done by the track?

Helmets are usually cheaper online, but you won't get a chance to try 'em on, which is pretty important. I know the local motorcycle places (like Michael's on S. Virginia) have a pretty big selection, but rarely do they have SA2000 rated helmets... so if you're looking for something that you can use for road racing, you probably want to skip the motorcycle shops.

Tech inspection will be at the track the morning of the event. MattR and I (and any other people that have saftey steward type training) will be conducting the inspections. The inspection will be very similar to the inspections given before AutoX events. After you pass inspection, you will receive your class letter, and a number if you didn't bring your own number.

Kostamojen 2004-08-02 02:31 PM

If you know your hat size, it is usually a reliable assesment as to your helmet size too. Mine turned out ok ordering it without a test fit, but who knows...

But ya, I could probably use a hand with redoing my brake fluid, I think its pretty expensive to have it done at shops, I dont have big money to spend right now on repairs.

Bump!

I've attached a bunch of forms to the 1st post. If you'd like to get a jump on the school and track paperwork, feel free to download and fill out the attached forms. Just don't sign them until you're in the presence of a RFR official Sunday morning.

Also, Matt and I are planning a pre-event tech inspection Saturday afternoon/evening before the event. Right now we're leaning towards having it in the Bully's parking lot where we have our weekly meets. We will be able to sign off your tech inspection and we will have the required forms and class stickers available.

Please note that all cars will be required to run numbers at the event, so if you've got magnetic AutoX numbers, bring 'em! Otherwise we will have tape for your windows.

Finally, this is the last week for $200 registrations. After this Thursday, registration will be $220. Get your payments in ASAP and save yourself 20 bucks!!

Couple Questions

I'm not seeing the forms on the first post. Maybe I'm just blind (I've been really busy, so I wouldn't be surprised).

Also, I didn't sign up for a hotel, but I'm thinking now that it may be a good idea. Where are people staying, and how much?

They are all attachments, and I actually looked right over them too, the first time I looked for them. Look for the map of the track, and then look directly below there. There should be plenty of .doc download links for you.

We didn't have enough people interested in a hotel to try and get a group rate anywhere. There are of course the big hotel/casinos of which I'd recommend the Peppermill. And of course the ol' standard Motel 6 (there are 4 in Reno). I'm sure there are motels in Fernley as well which would save you driving time in the morning, but there will probably be a caravan or two heading out to the track from Reno in the morning.

Also, there may be one or two members on the board that can put you up, but I can't speak for them... anyone have room for Berndt?

Bob Danger 2004-08-09 07:20 PM

i'm sorry to inform everyone that i must back out of the ferley track event. I just sold my car, and am in the process of picking up a 86 Corolla GTS, if i can get the motor in next week i'll sign back up but as of right now i'm out.
Sorry (Bob Davis, Bob Danger, aka turbo3rotor)

Just a reminder, today's the last day to sign up for the event and still get the $200 price. Tomorrow, the cost goes up to $220!

So if you're planning on attending, your best bet is to bring cash or check to the meet tonight, and MattR or I will be able to get you all setup!

In particular, I'm hoping Sam will be signing up! You Carson guys coming out to the meet?

In reference to timing

Time trials are fun, but they will eat up time. The last two summers I ran with a time trials group in Massachusetts (COM). All of the events were two day events. The first being driver's training (practice) and the second being more open track, and time trials. Even though only licenced drivers were allowed to run the second day, almost ALL of the accidents happened that day DURING the time trial. There's just something about competition that pushes people a little too hard.

That being said, I'm a huge proponent of time trials. I love the competition, and accept the higher risk. Becuase we only have one day though, we may as well just stick to a driver's training event. Timing will inevidably eat up a good two hours or more. Also, I've seen some of you drive ;)

Berndt

ArthurS 2004-08-12 01:50 PM

Since I know I am not going to participate (wish i could) then who else is going to go watch?

The time trials relay race has already been replaced with open track time. There should be 2.5 to 3 hours of track time for everyone at this event!

RSVP's

Scott:

Do we have enough registered to reserve the track, or will we be sharing with test and tune folks.

Any thoughts on how we could make sure the track is reserved for us only?

Either way, this will be a blast. Really looking forward to the day. I'm making my monthly trip to S-Squared next Tuesday for some minor adjustments (I need all the help I can get to keep that car straight).

I think we're probably in the clear. I'm hoping we'll get the last few people at the last minute, but even if we're a driver or two short of our goal, I think we'll be okay.

I'm sorry to hear you won't be able to make it out to the track! :( Like Matt said, we've got to deal with making sure the event gets paid for before being able to send out cancellation refunds. After the event, we'll hopfully be able to square away with you.
