Even on the Autobahn, you're not using the potential of the Ferrari... the difference between topping out at 140mph vs. 180mph isn't all that much in terms of average speed, i.e. the Ferrari is not going to reduce your overall trip time by much. Additionally, the Camry is probably much safer, even at autobahn speeds. So, with the exception of much nicer aesthetics, what's better about a Ferrari?

And as far as the race track goes... a Ferrari isn't any faster than any other modded car of similar power/weight ratio that can be had

If you look at it the way you do, that cars are only to get you from point A to Point B, then the only "things" that would make one car better than any other would be personal choice.
They will all get you to where you want to go, so in that regard only, there's no car that's better than any other car; unless you start assigning value to what you find important in your personal transportation. Do you value fuel economy? Do you value 0-60, 1/4 mile, cornering ability, stopping ability? Some cars are going to better than others at what you value. So will a Camry stop from 140mph as quickly and as stable as a purpose built sports car? Probably not, so the sports car is better in that regard and many others in my personal value system.
A Camry at 140 mph isn't going to be as stable as a GT-R, so the GT-R is better in regards to high speed stability. And if you've driven those speeds, then you are aware that the difference from 140mph to 180mph is HUGE! Moot point here in the land of 65.

Why do you drive a Subaru? Why don't you drive an SRT-4? Evidently there's something in the Subaru that you assign more value to? Something that you like "better" than a camry?

 My bitter cynicism extends to life in general too, not just the auto industry. You should also realize that pretty much anything I say on this board is strictly my own opinion, which is worth just as much as yours. I personally appreciate innovation and optimization in all aspects of vehicle performance. And by innovation I don't mean finding how many heated leather bluetooth-enabled radar-equipped heat-seeking cupholders you can squeeze into a given interior, and then charge eleventy-billion thousand more dollars for the "added value".

My status as a lowly engineering monkey doesn't afford me the opportunity to drive vehicles that carry prancing horse badges on the street. The closest I've come is driving real racecars on closed courses.

Yes. It's the best solid axle design the car has ever been equipped with, but still a solid axle. Ford built a couple of IRS prototypes they were thinking about putting in the current Cobra/Shelby/whateverthefucks, but shitcanned that idea due to their genius executives who micromanage the details of every car that rolls off the factory floor.

I also heard some guy at some aftermarket company designed a sweet scratch-built IRS prototype for the 05+ Mustangs a couple of years ago, but the company decided to drag its feet on the project and it still isn't available for sale.

It's funny, I read your posts and because of your avatar I actually hear Tyler's Durden's voice. It's a good match...

I don't know if I'd consider Duck's GT1 class race car (a $80,000 car with probably another $100,000 in work done) quite in the same category as a factory 911 turbo...

That car is insane. I wonder though if I had another 200hp and 1000 less weight if it'd still be faster than me... it should be, simply due to having better suspension geometry and weight distribution, but it'd be a fun race.

If you know the history behind that car you would be amazed...
It started life as a run of the mill 1977-78 (can't remember the exact year) 911. He then changed the body to the 993 look and then started dabbling in changing body parts over to Carbon. It survived the last big flood, barely... and then he added the turbo. That car is nowhere near $180,000. He might be around $50K into that car, and that's pushing it. Doing what he does for a living, he was able to do a lot for a little. Ever seen Matt's car (Owner of Sport Haus), that 911 makes Duck's look slow. Duck is a crazy little dude... way cool.

Yes, John McClure is the owner of Sport Haus. Matt has been the lead mechanic there for as long as I have had my P-car: 8 years. By now he may be a part owner though?

Matt did all the suspension work on my car.

A1337STI 2008-04-08 07:07 PM

Someone has a red one and was driving it two weeks ago. march 31st i do believe. I was driving up mt rose , got up past the peek. you have a right hander around the peek. a slight jog left, passing zone 1, a slight increase in the grade of the road and a jog right than left, passing zone 2 . then back to double yellow. a bit of a down hill (think there's 3 more passing zones)

Well behind passing zone 4 and the final one i saw some UBER New looking red car, pulled over on the side of the road. but pulled against the snow bank in a way he would have to back out to leave. like he was off snow shoeing or what ever. well about 2-3 seconds later that same car is passing me and 6 or 7 other cars in Double yellow zone. with an oncoming car just in sight.  WTF Jebus Christ dude!!! I got a very clear look at a Nissan GT-R badge on the right side of his rear end. yep it's a GT-R allright. when we got to the last passing zone he pulled over on the side of the road and parks. I was tempted to pull over, tell him he's an asshat and get back on my way. but with an hour commute i just want to get home.

It's probably the owner of a dealership or something... anywho :P

100_Percent_Juice 2008-04-08 07:13 PM

You should have done a massive power slide next to him and kicked rocks all over the place.

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the "Victory Specification" designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap. This, according to bystanders trackside. (For comparison, Walter Röhrl lapped the Ring in 7:28 while driving a Porsche Carrera GT in 2004.)

In contrast to the standard Nissan GT-R, that made the run around the 'Ring in 7:38, the GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses... or so.

The GT-R is a world beater. Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, Corvette... they're all going to have to either go twice as fast, or cut their prices by 50% to compete.

A1337STI 2008-04-09 12:18 PM

Yep that was the red one that blew by me. It looked like he was probably just playing around on that part of 431. A very sick car!

Actually, I was being serious.

Much like the WRX/STi raised the bar for ~$30k sports cars, the GT-R is doing the same for the $80K level. For example, the STi at $30k performed like $60k cars when it came out. Now the GT-R is whooping up on cars like Ferraris and Porsche Turbos that cost $160k.

MPREZIV 2008-04-09 04:37 PM

I'm with Tyson, in the "but you're still driving a Nissan" boat.

In my opinion, Nissan hasn't really built many vehicles lately, without running into a TON of stupid ass, "we under-engineered this" problems. Even the vehicles built in Japan, that most people would swear are better built, have BUMBASS issues. Z cars with fuel/vapor hoses that dry-rot and dump out fuel within 3k miles, Muranos with t-cases splitting clean in half, and transmissions that won't make it to your 30k service.

I know every manufacturer has it's issues, so to speak, but I really don't think Nissan's made a decent vehilcle in at least 4 years. When they did make good cars, they were boring 2.4L Altimas, average (in terms of interest) Maximas, and trucks that hadn't seen a redesign in YEARS. They were all AWESOME in terms of reliability and serving their purpose, but nobody gave a shit about them, and Nissan struggled. Now they're coming out with all new and redesigned vehicles that are eye-catching and look GREAT on paper, but they can't seem to deliver in the reliability dept. any more.

I really hope people who pay likely around 100K for a GTR, (after dealers mark them up, which they WILL) don't find themselves fighting for "lemon law" to buy that shit back, but I won't be surprised if it happens.

sperry 2008-04-09 10:03 PM

I look at the GT-R the same way as I look at the Vette. I'd rather punch myself in the balls than buy a Chevy, but I'd rock a Vette... it's not really built by the same company that builds the crap like the Cobalt and Equinox.

The GT-R, being hand-built and somewhat of a special project, can't possibly be as bad as all the Renault polluted mass production Nissans. Plus, since it's such a low production car, I doubt they're cutting corners the way they do to on stuff like Altimas and Maximas to increase profits.

WRX06TR 2008-04-09 10:29 PM

Sorry but I would definitely rock this "just a Nissan" but if this new GTR is anything like the old R33 or R34 I'd say that you are getting so much more than a Nissan.

Screw the status symbol... that car runs under 8:00 laps at the Nurburgring, bone stock! Even if Nissan's are just riced up Renaults these days, the lapboard says the GT-R has status. The Altima, notsomuch.
