Looks like a levee broke out in Fernely.

Houses flooded.

My sisters and I hiked up the ridge behind my house about 400ft and established a sled run in some 2-3ft deep powder on a steep jeep trail. All the while the snow was doing about 1" per hour.

Lots of sled donkeys were sighted, resulting in spectacular wrecks.

Heres my car at Nick's house.

The Fernley flood just missed Pat Housel's place. These are pictures from 1&1/2 blocks down the street and 3 blocks behind him.

Yeah, I haven't washed the car since the last autox. I still need to stick another cone kill decal on the other side, too.

In retrospect, my comment about Round Table sounds really crass and inconsiderate amongst the discussion about the flooding. I should note that it was less, "I want my pizza," and more, "I ran a store for three years and it bothers me to see a place shut down a key part of its business for less than two inches of snow." :|

At any rate, it's fun to watch the boy learn new stuff. He's not talking yet (he's only 16 months so far) but he understands a lot, and it's neat to see it in effect. I also would never have realized that he'd been paying attention to us when getting in the car until he went up and tried to specifically open the driver's side door.

He's also apparently been watching me drive. . . we stuck him in the driver's seat for a moment, and instead of just screwing with the steering wheel, he went right for the shift lever. Subaru enthusiast in the making?

I kept the snow donkeys at bay all week. I had a training class from Tuesday through Friday in Sac, and didn't feel like fighting the ski morons back up friday night so I waited til Saturday. As luck would have it I got to Applegate about 4 minutes after they closed 80 at 1:30 on Saturday. Turned back, had dinner, then left Vacaville in a lull around 6:45. Got home at 10:15, with chian controls up from Colfax to Boomtown, no incidents. All the news outlets were telling everyone not to go ANYWHERE for 3 days, so traffic was nice and light which helped my sanity. I don't mind the snow donkeys; I hate the effect of more than 3 morons in the same place at the same time on a snow covered freeway.

NevadaSTi 2008-01-07 11:02 AM

All I can say is that I miss my STi. :(

To be fair there's no grass so it's not really a lawn. :P

Anyone know how bad traffic will be from Reno to Stead on 395 this evening. My GF is leaving work at 6pm and she wants to know if she needs to put chains on her Civic with decent all seasons.

Traffic is light today - especially around Spaghetti Bowl. I'd be more worried about the wet roads freezing after dark.

cody 2008-01-21 03:59 PM

Yah, thank Black God it's MLKD.

Not sure how "traffic" affects need for chains, but all those commuters should pound all the ice and snow off of the roads if it desn't start up again before she heads home. If I were her, I would expect everybody to be moving slower though.

sperry 2008-01-21 05:59 PM

I saw the plows out on the freeway... so I would assume they're pretty clean.

I wish a plow or two would hit up the surface streets though... the snow's still deeper than the bumper on the SVX. It'd be fun if the AWD on the SVX was working 100%. :(

When it comes to the evening commute up the hill to Stead, bad traffic is indicatative of bad conditions. It took me 3 hours to get home one evening last Winter.

Yah, the commute was easy. It's funny, but you folks in S. Meadows got more snow than we did in Stead due to the Lake Effect snow.

Nick Koan 2008-01-21 09:53 PM

I almost his a curb today. In fact, it was the closest I think I've come to hitting a curb in a long time. :( But, luckily there was a dry patch of road about a foot away from the curb, and I was able to recover without much drama.

Also, my roommate (in his FJ) ended up plowing through a corner, ended up hopping a curb right by Rick's Deli and had to choose between a fire hydrant, empty parking space and a parked car. Luckily he picked correctly and was able to maneuver to it.

Also, I got to see one other incidence of Snow Donkeys this morning. From which I have created an MS Paint.

Did the truck actually hit him?

No, the truck was a little further away than in the diagram, but the guy freaked out and gunned it. I think he thought he had plenty of time to cross traffic, not realizing how slow he had to launch on the ice. And then, of course, his ass was halfway through the intersection and the truck was barreling down with no way to stop in time, so he just gunned it through the rest of the intersection, and still tried to make the turn. And that's when he looped it and was faced right at me. Luckily I saw this all happening and started braking well before he started spinning.

Although, I forgot to mention, we did see the remnants of a big-ol'-truck hitting a much larger delivery truck. It looked like another case of "hey, I've got enough time to pull out in front of this guy."

cody 2008-01-21 10:53 PM

I hope I don't picard all the way to work tomorrow.

I was almost that truck on my way back from picking up lunch. I was on that ice-covered road that connects Double R to Prototype, pulling up to the stop sign to make a right on Prototype. Well the truck seems to have all sorts of grip and was slowing down just fine... then all 4 wheels locked, no ABS help. It's amazing how far a 7,000 lb truck will slide at walking speeds.

There was a Jeep coming down Prototype that I was going to fully plow straight to hell in slow motion, but he was nice enough to drive down the center of the street to give me room, and I was able to lift off the brakes and get enough traction to turn into the right lane of Prototype. It's kinda crazy how much adrenaline you can get pumping by being out of control at around 5 mph.

Going to the fridge for a soda is my exercise for the day... so, that's like maximum rush right there.

knucklesplitter 2008-01-22 01:50 PM

Last night I was coming down a very moderate hill to a stop sign and... nope - no luck with braking. Just had to take that 5mph slide for life into the intersection. As soon as I realized it was clear I just gave it some gas and went.

They must have been up at McCarran & Caughlin Ranch. 3 car pile up plus a cop parked over the top of the crest in traffic lane... Somebody is going to plow into him next. He should be back up in the Intersection...

I need to drive with my phone out when it is snowing so I can snap pictures.

I guess some snow donkeys kicked over the power grid for my street last night at 11:00, and they did a good job because I still have no power this morning.

Stumbling around freezing my butt of in the dark. weak.
