Well, yeah. Haven't we known for a while now that Reno was going to end life as we know it?
|
Fun Fact: Lake Tahoe contains an estimated 39.75 trillion gallons or 122 million acre feet of water. That's enough water to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14.5 inches. The water that evaporates daily is 1.4 million tons, enough to supply the needs of 3.5 million people on a daily basis.

Surface evaporation is amazing. We need a really big "pool" cover and all our water problems are solved. :)
I was stunned when I put one of those blue bubble wrap ones on my hot tub and it stayed full more than a week. I thought I had a leak before that. |

I remember there being a quick jolt, then a hard rolling that just kept getting stronger and stronger. I had felt earthquakes before, but this one was so much longer than the rest, it was scary. Usually, the quake is over before you even notice it... but the '89 one was long enough to take action while it was happening. I went to a door jam for cover (climbing under a card table with a 200 lb computer on it seemed like a bad idea). My sister and her friend came running up the stairs (why, I have no idea), and the bookshelf at the top of the stairs was throwing paperbacks down on them. After the quake we went over to the neighbors house and watched the news... every time there was an aftershock, the news reporters would get all wide-eyed and say "we're having an aftershock!" then like 2 seconds later we'd feel it. Then watch the water in their pool slosh all over the backyard. |

Well now this is interesting...
http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar...IAL01/80425027 I think God is unhappy with the new Somersett developments. |
I feel like some maniac Christopher Walken character and Grace Jones as a crazy amazon woman named MayDay should fly over any moment in the Zorin blimp to the strains of Duran Duran...
|
Thanks for clarifying that reference Dean :p
|
I had to go look up "Zorin" on Wiki, and had forgotten it was Walken and just went crazy with Bond mania!!! I can't wait until November for "Quantum of Solace"! Casino Royale and Daniel Craig rocked! (Which is appropriate for this thread!)

Since my lab is in the building next to the Geology folks, after the first one we went next door where the drums recording various western Nevada seismometers are located and watched the second one and aftershocks roll in.....

Woah, just felt one down south just now.
|
HOLY CRAP ME TOO!
|
That was awesome!
|
Holy Shit
|
That was a big-ish one.
And I thought for a second "Damn, the force feedback on this wheel is stronger than I remember" until I realized that the whole house was shaking. If that was centered up north again, and but was that strong down here... damn... |
So that's what an earthquake feels like.
|
At first I thought damn those mushrooms are kicking in, but then I realized that the best is still to come.
|
Oh and that's what she said!

It looks like that one was 4.9: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/120-39.htm
|
Well, now I'm up.
|
This seems pretty strange. There have been so many concentrated earthquakes in that area - I'm callin' volcano!
|
I'm waiting in anticipation for the aftershock.....grabbing cold sierra nevada
|
Now that I see what a 4.9 is like; it would have sucked to have been in Wells NV when that 6.0 hit in Feb.

Sweet! Too bad Carson's so insulated.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learning/topics/richter.php Aside..I am trippin! I hate the shock that earthquakes have, whereas most other natural happenings has some sort of a sign (usually) I hate the fact that we could be waiting for a 6.0 to hit and out of nowhere be shaking. Ugh, I hate that surprise they have. I almost vaulted off my couch when that last one hit... |

It weird. you start to sense it coming. Like you feel the subsonic rumbling them a low growl and then POW! WTF! Scotty, what building on campus are you in? I'm over in SEM right next to geology

What scares me most about earthquakes is not knowing if they are going to get worse while they are happening. I get caught between, "Earthquake! Neat!" And, "OMGZ should I jump under my desk?!"
|
Doorway, Jon. Doorway.
|
I would much rather live in earthquake country than tornado/hurricane, flood etc... country.
Heck, hail and freezing rain suck more. I realize earthquakes may be far more unpredictable, but all the rest injure/kill/cause damage to a hell of a lot more people and stuff on a much more regular basis than earthquakes. |
still haven't felt a damn thing. GF woke me up after the Friday night one.
GF:"Didnt' you feel that!!? The whole house was shaking!!" Me: [snore] "huh? wha...?" |

This morning's wake up call was another 4.2...
I'm telling you, the mole people's tunnel boring machines are going to pop wright up in Somerset and they are going to want to know where Starbucks is! |
They said on the news that at least one insurance company has put a moratorium on new earthquake insurance in this area.

I thought that was a pretty wimpy one to be rated 4.2. My guess at the time was 3-3.5 . Maybe it was just such a short burst that it didn't really knock anything over like the usual 3.5+ ones do.

Maybe this is all just some viral promo for the inevitable Cloverfield sequel.

I agree with Scott. I told my physics teacher that there is a huge magma tube running from under mogul over to Mt. Rose and it is going to become an active volcano.
