Victory is mine!

100_Percent_Juice 2008-04-28 03:31 PM

Is anyone going to swing by gamestop tonight at 12 to get GTA4?

Nick Koan 2008-04-28 03:43 PM

No, I'll likely be doing something significantly more interesting, like yawning or stretching.

tysonK 2008-04-28 03:46 PM

Is GTA really that fun?

If I'm awake and have nothing better to do then I might. If not I'm going to pick it up tomorrow.

IGN gave GTA4 straight 10 ratings which has never happened for any game before. I have enjoyed playing the last ones even though it does get stale after a time. Hell, I don't even have a console, I'm going with my friend to get it. Your right though, staying up until midnight is CrAzY!!

Probably b/c it gives IGN more publicity to give something all 10's b/c I assume they don't do it that often.

Now IGN will get coverage for being that review that gave it 10's, GTA already gets enough press.

M3n2c3 2008-04-28 09:06 PM

Anyone playing Mario Kart Wii or Smash Bros Brawl online?

My Wii code is: 5376-6055-6521-0263
Mario Kart code is: 1590-5101-8768
Smash Bros code is: 1375-6960-4350

My "I wish Nintendo had thought of a better way of doing this" code is: 2rghudumm135.

Unlike my xbl gamertag (M3n2c3), my wii name is Jerm.

I'll bet it's just as boring as all the rest once you're 20 minutes in. :unamused:

JonnydaJibba 2008-04-29 07:19 AM

Mindlessly murdering cops and kids and hookers is hella boring.

And Tyson, IGN has never given a game a 10 before. I think Bioshock got a 9.7. I'm leaving work at 12:30 so I can play aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllll daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay looooooooooooooooooong.

Nick Koan 2008-04-29 08:16 AM

Yeah, I took a crap this morning too. It rated 10.1 in fact, which is amazing since the scale stops at 10. But anyway, my point is, just because I gave it a high rating doesn't mean I want to play with it.

Less so if a third party was rating my dookies.

cody 2008-04-29 08:24 AM

I want to play with the GTA Dookie 4. :(

If a third party rated GT5 a 1 or a 10 it wouldn't make a difference to you would it?

Nick Koan 2008-04-29 08:32 AM

No, I probably wouldn't care. But then again, Gran Turismo as a series is only at about a 6 on my interest scale anyway.

How does that convert into the SI measurement of Kourics?

So, if GTA4 is perfect, are all video games everywhere now obsolete? Is the industry completely destroyed? Remember, if it's perfect, that implies the game has perfect replayability... i.e. you should be able to play it forever without getting tired of it, no?

Ugh... what marketing bullshit. Remember when GameSpot gave Tony Hawk 3 a perfect 10. Yeah, that game was perfect too. Makes me wonder why they made Tony Hawk 4.

Dean 2008-04-29 10:04 AM

Nadia Comaneci's perfect 10s in the 1976 Olympics wouldn't rate much over a 7.0 this summer in China. The skateboard vert runs Tony Hawk won competitions with in the 80s wouldn't even qualify him for a minor contest today.

There are Atari 2600 games that were rated a 10 back in their day.

That is the nature of progress. Though I would challenge that some things are timelessly good, that does not make them fresh, new or completely kick ass! :)

Everything must be taken in perspective.

And just like the Olympics, you can't just take one judge's view. Throw out the high and the low and take the average of the others.

Exactly. Its obvious that everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to games. Just like if Scott were to say to me "Hey they just released Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Simulator 3.0 and I'm gonna go pick it up on my lunch break!". I wouldn't care what ratings it got because I think all flight simulators are boring as hell. Does my thinking make Scott's feelings or review of the game any less valid? No. Its the same with movies and TV shows. I loved the movie Kung Pow and I laugh hard every time I see it but, my wife will actually leave the room if its on TV. Game and movie ratings are worth absolutely nothing unless you know who is giving the rating and if they have the same tastes as you.

No. Just because a game gets a "perfect score" doesn't mean that you will be able to play it endlessly. Look at Portal for example. I would give that game a 10 and yet I lost most all interest once I beat the game. I wouldn't even say that a 10 means perfection. To me or IMO, I feel that a 10 rating simply means that you cant find anything worth complaining about. That doesn't mean that the game can't be improved upon or changed to make it better.

I disagree. 10 out of 10 means quite literally that there's no room for improvement. And therefore it should never be given out. Give out a 9.99 if you have to, but 10 is the equivalent of light speed.

But the real reason why giving the game a 10 is dumb, is because it's just for feeding the hype and boosting sales. "OMG OMG OMG, IT GOT A 10!!! THAT NEVER HAPPENED, OMG OMG. *teenage nerd-gasm*". Give it a 9.9 and say "this game is awesome, if you have the means I highly suggest picking it up"... no need to spin up the hype machine more.

M3n2c3 2008-04-29 05:46 PM

I think a ten is valid if the game is obviously superior to all other titles available, has no faults, and is unlikely to be surpassed on its given console or generation. There will always be room for improvement, so each game should be rated against other titles within its generation. Otherwise most NES games should only have been rated to a max of 2.

IGN and others have given tens to plenty of deserving games. . . Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) and Link's Awakening (Gameboy) are two good examples. They are easily the best on their respective systems.

So I take it no one's playing mario kart or ssbb. . .
