I found out about this via another forum.

Some kinda squid was caught on film by a Shell Oil ROV (remote operated vehicle) at the bottom of their drill site. More info inside link.

I believe oil rigs are good for drilling up to around 7 miles deep... that's about 37,000 feet. Having the first 8000 feet made out of ocean just makes things easier.
