Thanks Dean.

And don't hold your breath on a programmable ECU. I figure if that car has been around for 17 years and nothing has come out yet, I don't expect anything ground-breaking. I was looking into engine management when I had my Legacy, but I never found an acceptable solution that someone local could tune. I had this idea of swapping the intake manifold to the 02+ WRX one, which would allow use of a WRX ECU (with some modifcation), as well as WRX fitment turbos, intake, intercoolers, etc. Just a thought ;) |
Yeah, a head swap would be part of the WRX ECU bit. Not sure I want to go down that road yet.....
Also, this weekend I finally swapped the LSD back into a 4.11 diff, so I have LSD again! (not the Berkley kind) On the downside, I don't like the fitment of the '94 driveshaft that I put on to fit the new diff, so I think I will have to swap companion flanges, which should be easy as long as I don't screw up the backlash setting. Still trucking, I really want to do a grounding mod next. |
Update -
Rear diff flange swapped, so the correct driveline and the LSD are attached to the 4.11 case and ring. All I can say is that the rear end comes out really quick on gravel! Paint-matched the A-pillar gauge pod! Acquired EvoScan software + OBD1 SSM1 cable and am trying to map the correct ECU addresses for datalogging! 6-gauge cable grounding mod done! Next: Coilpack upgrade from a mid-90's Impreza/Leg |
Wow, did a lot this weekend.
New coil pack. Tweaked plug gaps. Swapped in a very low miles suspension setup from a GC, KYB AGX's and Prodrive P1's. Swapped in the front STi knuckles and hubs - 5x100. Fixed a jacked wire on the TPS, had to pull a connector pin and re-solder/crimp. New knock sensor. Slapped on a JDM VF-8, jury's still out. Need: all rubber associated with sway bars. |
Nice work! You'll like that suspension setup for street driving. It feels firm but not jarring and won't make you prone to oversteer.
|
wow that is a big weekend. Bet it runs awesome.

Done, and it drives great and straight! Can't wait to drop the summer tires on......come on Global Warming!
Cory, impressions of the car as-is? |
I can't wait to see it tonight!

Some minor news.
Put the Hancook Ventus 225/45's on there, they are freakin sweet. Had Thomas tint everything, he did a great job as usual. Replaced the drop-link bushings on the RSB with poly. Put Cody's 20mm FSB on. Painted up the cheesy black trim around the windows, I expect this will be a yearly ritual. Painted the grill black too. Next up: Headlight clearing, 440cc JDM injectors (being serviced right now), Revtronix stage 2 chip (have it here) with the TD-04 and a new MAF once the injectors get back. |
Sweet! When can we expect you at an autox?

Fabbed up an in-fender CAI using parts of two generic intake sets, and a flange TIG welded by a friend. Pretty sweet, I'm glad to have all that plastic out of there.

OK, made some big changes.
Installed: JDM 440cc injectors out of the EJ20G that I bought (serviced by Witchhunter, fast turnaround with all new O-rings) TD-04 (again) mid-90's EJ22 N/A JECS MAF ECU chip by Revtronix.com for above items Results: so far, a mixed bag. Obviously, a tuned chip by mail order is not going to be exactly right, but the new parameters to utilize the higher-capacity MAF and 440's were necessary. It has two maps, one for 91 octane at 14psi, and one for 93 octane at 16 psi. So far I have gotten the same fuel mileage as the old 380cc's. However, I have had to revert to the MBC once again because the chip is designed for a 10psi wastegate (newer TD04's), and mine has the 6psi version. The ECU just could not get around that, and driveability was suffering. Things are much smoother with the MBC, but I miss the staged boost control of the computer-controlled solenoid. This may get addressed down the road, being one of the first users of a product has some disadvantages. Maybe I'll just track down a new actuator or something. I also put on the 3" bellmouth downpipe that I've had sitting around since I bought the donor car - it turned out to mate to the catback just fine with a 3" gasket I had on the shelf. That changed a LOT in terms of exhaust note. The car sounds pretty awesome right now. So right now I don't know if the car is any faster than it used to be, but at least the injector and MAF capacity are raised up, and the top-end of the TD-04 is more responsive than before after 5000rpm. I'm waiting for the ECU to smooth things out after a few days of driving before making a final assessment. Probably I'll have everything figured out tuning-wise about the time this motor goes....lol. |
Are you going to bring it out to an autox this year?
