Yes, there will be a Saturday tech... but Matt and I are still hammering out a location and the details. Stay tuned!

dirtyWRX 2004-08-23 11:47 AM

Is anyone showing up with a compressor and impact wrench? Still cannot get the damn passenger side front caliper off since Santa Monica Subaru so generously WAY over torqued the bolts.

I've got one, but I've noticed that a breaker bar and Liquid Wrench works much better than an impact wrench on the brakes. I went through a whole tank of air trying to zap mine loose a while back, and the wouldn't budge... the breaker bar took it right off.

bemanii 2004-08-23 02:25 PM

Breaker bar + hammer = impact wrench.

dirtyWRX 2004-08-23 03:48 PM

OK, no need anymore. I guess the second attempt was the charm. Also, I learned something. If you strike a wrench near it's end, most of the force of the blow is absorbed by the flex of the wrench. It works MUCH better to strike the wrench about halfway up the handle. That way most of the "impact" is applied to the bolt rather than the wrench.

For what it's worth, I absolutely cannot believe that they would tighten it that hard. I've probably removed over 20 subaru calipers in my day, and NEVER has anything been near this hard to remove. My wrenches are all dinged up from repeted blows by the hammer.

All fixed now.

Follow up question. Anyone willing to sell a bottle of Motul brake fluid? I ran out while bleeding/flushing.

Thanks and see you all Sat/Sun,

Berndt

You should have seen me taking the old tie rod ends off the front of my car... the only way to do it is with a BFH. Take a 5lb sledge with a good length handle and hit the front side of the spindle steering arm absolutely as hard as you can. Each impact actually instantaneously ovalizes the hole that the tie rod stud is sitting in, and so the tie rod falls out. WHAM-WHAM-WHAM-WHAM-WHAM-*chink*. Fun stuff...

You realize that in the Subaru circles, what you call a "BFH", we call "The Ford Tool".

I wasn't gonna say anything........

See you guys Friday with the hooptywagon, after I wander around trying to find Reno Hilton 3...

Matt, we can just use the hoopty to transport stuff to Fernley, so you don't need to jack a truck unless we need one.

For those of you wondering about the credentials you will recieve towards Test-n-Tune days at Reno-Fernley here's the official word from the track:

Quote:

Upon approval of their instructors, participants will receive a rookie permit, which allows them to come to the track for test & tune under the rookie program. FYI, they are not given the same liberties as a competition racer. Any problems (spins, dropping of wheels, off-track excursions, etc.) will be cause to cancel their rookie permit until they attend another driving class. The rookie permit is only valid at Reno-Fernley Raceway. In addition, the participants will also receive a Certificate of Completion from The Next Level Driving School.
So, by completing the school this weekend, you will be able to come back to RFR for the open track test-n-tune days!

Any word on a meet? BobbyD and I are coming up Saturday and staying in Fernley at the world renowned Super8. We need to check in by 8pm so we'll be leaving the Roseville area around 5pm.

Egan 2004-08-24 06:05 PM

A couple of questions (somehow I got unsubscribed and I'm too lazy to read all 6 pages, so forgive me if I'm repeating something):

1) Will there be a hot lap transmitter near the start/finish?

2) Is 100 octane available at the track?

3) Can I use my own magnetic numbers? (#70)

sybir 2004-08-24 07:30 PM

Gimme a call when you get into town, bish, we'll have enough club members in one house to have a meet ;)

Mike,
1) No hot lap transmitters, however, during open sessions I'm sure we can convince someone to keep "unofficial lap times"

2) Yes, pumps will be open

3) Yes, please use your magnetic #'s, We will reg you as #70 . That goes for everyone, of you have #'s, please bring them along...

Can we assign our own numbers? I don't have a complete set - I was too lazy and didn't make all ten digits :p

sperry 2004-08-24 11:53 PM

Numbers will be 1st come 1st serve at Tech, chances are everyone with numbers will be able to use 'em as I doubt we'll have too many repeats. Numbers will be assigned/recorded at tech. If you don't have magnetic numbers, you'll get a wicked tight set of tape numbers on your rear side windows.

We're still working on a Tech location for Saturday. Mike, you might want to come up a bit earlier if possible on Sat so you can drop by Reno for tech on your way to Super8 in Fernley. We should have a location and time hammered out early tomorrow.

sperry 2004-08-25 12:05 AM

One thing I forgot to mention... lunch at the track will be provided for drivers only. If you are coming, but not driving, and want lunch provided (usually a sammich, chips, and soda... nothing fancy) it will be $10 each, and I need to know buy the end of Wednesday at the latest, so I can tell the track.

To be honest, you'd probably do better just to pack some sandwich meats in a cooler or something and provide your own lunches.

Weather looks like it will be mid to low 90's, no rain (knock on wood). So remember, this is high altitude, so 94 degrees will be hot and you will burn so bring sunscreen, and a hat.

Also, I don't remember reading about a driver's dress code, but make sure to bring all cotton long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Hopefully we won't be required to wear them in the heat, but better to have 'em on hand, then to have to run to Walmart to buy some crappy clothes.

sybir 2004-08-25 05:06 AM

Alright, I'll be there, and not driving, but I'll just bring a cooler and some eats. Anyone else who wants to use said facilities is welcome to ;) (nick)

The Preparation document lists 'Long sleeve shirt & pants' in the Requirements for Registration. At every track event I've driven in, a long-sleeve shirt is required. What helps in the heat, is to wear a t-shirt or something underneath (bikini top, ), so that you can take off the long sleeves when you're done running.

Just goes to show... just because I don't remember reading it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. huh?

So yeah, all drivers, long pants and long sleeves!

I doubt I will be able to make the track day. I want to watch, but for a few reasons, I still am cautious about running.

You can do it!

Remember it's not a race. I've never been to the track either (hmmm does that help or not?)

I think you will regret not doing it. It's a school so you can take it as slow or fast as you want. With 2.4 miles and 15 people on the track at a time, we will each potentially have more than an 1/8 mile between us. I'm sure for the novice class, the morning session is no passing and getting used to the track until you are more comfortable to increase your speed.

That's exactly right. You'll actually be pushing the car a lot less that you do in AutoX... it's all about learning to balance the car and pick your lines, and plan ahead... driving fast isn't the goal, and you never have to go faster than you feel comfortable with.

Take my spot. You can always just go out there and cruise around and not push the car.

ArthurS 2004-08-25 02:05 PM

I am comfortable with my driving, and the others around me. It's just that I need to finish a lot of stuff I feel is necessary before tracking the car again. Some I probably could not finish in time. Last thing I want is something to go wrong with it. This includes new brakes, brake fluid, spark plugs, and the transmisson has gotten jerky.

I think we can scrape together enough pads and fluid to get your brakes done in time, and spark plugs aren't difficult (you only need the $1.50 NGK coppers). Your gearbox will be fine too as long as you shift properly. And if it breaks, you get RA gears. :D

ArthurS 2004-08-25 03:14 PM

I have the iridiums all ready, just nervous to do that install.

I already replaced my front pads, just not fluid.

I can do your spark plugs if you want. I haven't yet done WRX plugs, which take a lot longer than RS plugs, but it works the same way. Plus I have FSMs. You have any more excuses about not coming to run on Sunday? :P

Lucky for you, subarus come with brakes that are too small, which means that there are many people that have done at track between session rotor/pad swaps. With one person at each corner, we could get the brakes totally replaced in under 10 minutes!

Spark plugs...not a problem. This coming from the person whose coilpack assploded as he was trying to remove it. OK, it didn't assplode, really, it just broke. USE dialectric grease!

You're a track rookie. Your car will be just fine. It's when you get better that you start to break/wear out shit.
