Wow, just wow.

You gotta love something that says "Safety Car" on it all smashed up.

100_Percent_Juice 2007-07-22 05:47 AM

Wow, that sucks. Does an insurance company cover that when it happens on a race track?

That pace car is an unlicensed/able unregistered/able uninsured/able non car on unlimited "loan" from Nissan. It can only be returned to them, or destroyed I believe, and it has now gone well towards the later.

An FX35 seems like a really shitty car for use on a road course to me anyway.... how about something that's NOT a lifted Altima.

"That just happened."

"SAFETY CAR" HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Forgotten 2007-07-22 11:12 AM

Seeing it from down in the pits was fairly epic. The tire popping was really loud and the ensuing dustcloud was pretty amazing.

It's an FX45 with the 320 hp motor. Having driven it on track before, it's actually kinda fun.

sperry 2007-07-22 11:38 AM

I don't know who was driving. Someone said it was someone from SFR, but I can't confirm that.

All I know is when I stopped to make sure he was okay, he was getting out of the car on the radio. I'm really curious what he was saying to race control: "um, yeah... so uh... pace car is off course drivers left and into the wall, um... yellow flag?".

Ah, so the bigger motor'd, FR Murano... still puckers my arse thinking about that thing on track... I guess I just work on them too much.

So........if it's 2 seconds for hitting a cone, what's the penalty for hitting a wall? Pat R. used to wheel that big'ol piece around pretty good, and I never recall him htting anything! This isn't going to help the SCCA track trials program!

In the ever so wise words of Mr. Homer Simpson . . . D'OH!!! Sheesh, and I thought I was a crappy driver. ;) That video is all over the Net already, btw. Thanks for sharing, Scott. Whose Subie was that anyway (driving -- I THINK it was a Subie?)??? Great catch. Now we know what to do if we start a race and the pace car falls out of the pack . . .

MattR 2007-07-22 04:42 PM

You have go to be fucking kidding me! Several of us have driven that thing on the track in recent years, and never had any issues, it's totally safe in that role. What a mess.

cody 2007-07-22 05:25 PM

Oops. Confirms how lucky I got when I left the track at ~90 mph.

That was my WRX. I was on pole for the event, and watched in astonishment as it happened.

Apart from the photographer :)

What a way to confuse the pack of cars following. My head would have exploded if I was you Scott.
"Now what do I do...?"

NEMESIS!

Well, I stopped to make sure the driver was okay... but after that, I figured I'd just go to the next flag stand, get the black flag and come into the pits. But race control was a little slow, and didn't make the call to black flag until after I had already passed the last flag stand... so I ended up making a full lap at pace speed under yellow, then getting the black flag to pit for wall repairs.

Perhaps if the wall hadn't been damaged, the pace car could have just come off course while we were under yellow, then we could have taken the green w/o pitting... that would have made sense for keeping us out under yellow.

wrxkidid 2007-07-22 07:06 PM

damn that sucks.

how come whenever i leave something interesting happens ?

doubleurx 2007-07-22 07:30 PM

Thankfully no one was hurt. This way we can all just laugh!

doubleurx 2007-07-22 08:39 PM

After watching the video again, I could only picture the other camera view - the one with the FX45 driver looking in his rear view mirror, saying - "wtf is that subaru turning all over the place for - oh he must be heating up his tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii........................oh shit!
