It's a big one too. First picture is from my front yard.

U53D 2004-07-14 08:11 PM

Yeah... i was wondering where that was comin from. Is it under control now?

JC 2004-07-14 08:49 PM

Looks like it, I can't see flames anymore.

sperry 2004-07-14 08:53 PM

Did they evacuate you?

Kostamojen 2004-07-14 08:53 PM

Is that over by the pick n pull?

dknv 2004-07-14 08:58 PM

The newws makes it sound like its still out of control, and Kings Canyon residents were evacuated.

Yeah, we kept getting email's at work all day long, and every now and then some people would have to up and take off. I heard a few houses have laready burned. And the kicker... the fire was started by some punk kids' illegal bon-fire. :x

Until you've had friends that lost houses in the Oakland Hills fire, I guess you just don't respect how much a wild-fire can screw up your life. :x

tysonK 2004-07-14 09:05 PM

that last picture is cool.

I hope they are held responsible.

I just heard a news flash, a bunch of neighborhoods are evacuated -- homes of several friends from my Carson City residence days. We had one guy leave work around 3, after his wife told him ash was an inch thick on their balcony. I don't expect to see him at work tomorrow, I just hope his & the rest of the homes can be kept safe.

God help our firefighters out there, it has been fiercely windy here and I imagine the same up there.

tysonK 2004-07-14 09:10 PM

Yeah I feel bad complaining about the wind preventing me washing my car when some peoples lives and largest investments are hanging in the wind.

No it's over by the 395 and 50 junction. The fire is certainly not out but I can't see flames over the hills any more just a red glow. I would imagine homes back there are still SOL for now. I didn't get evacuated, the fire would have to jump a four lane highway to get to me.

It's moving away from the population, but into the worst territory - hard to reach, and easy fuel. One of my CC co-workers said as he watched it last night, he was amazed to see a pine tree destroyed in 5 seconds!

sperry 2004-07-15 08:23 AM

As long as no more homes are in jeopardy, the CDF can always trench and backfire around it and wait it out. There's only so much fuel out there.

I just hope the wind stays the way it is right now, so at lease Reno's not filled with smoke. Yesterday afternoon is was ashing here in South Meadows, and my asthma was killing me!

ArthurS 2004-07-15 09:32 AM

Wow...looks serious. I know Franz was 'on-call' last night due to it. Scary stuff.

Here's some pics from last year...

sperry 2004-07-15 03:09 PM

Just got an update via work email...

Quote:

Waterfall Fire update 3:40 p.m. Thursday:
-Reports of houses involved in the Lakeview area
-Fire has entered Timberline area
-Sheriff's units ordered to leave Timberline
-Highway 395 closed
-Residents living on Lakeview and Timberline evacuated
-Record number of hand crews ordered to fight fire
-26 aircraft fighting fire, 2 military choppers on the way
-32 hand crews on scene, nearly 900 firefighters
-Fire has grown beyond the earlier estimate of 8,500 acres burned
-Nine homes, one business, eight vehicles destroyed
-Four firefighters, 1 civilian injured
-600 homes threatened
So, uh JC and the other Carson guys, if you're coming to the meet tonight, you might want to leave now, since you'll have to go through Virginia City. Or stay home and keep a look out for you property! Good luck and be safe!

JC 2004-07-15 03:18 PM

I should be able to go through Tahoe, I have to go to Incline anyway.

Yeah he was busy signing up for the New Year's Carribean cruise and sitting around on his ass. Homeboy got a full time job as a Riverside FD Firefighter!!! So I guess he's like "F the CDF!"

Speaking of which, I dunno if Glen called you, but the cruise is happening... I've got a room reserved and need a roommate, so if you're available and Laura doesn't want to go, we got room for you.

Riverside near LA? That's probably gonna be a sweet job compared to CDF... course now he'll be patching up bullet wounds instead of fighting forest fires.

As for the cruise, I just can't go. I've already used one of my five (5) vacation days for the year over the 4th of July weekend, and I'll probably be using more between now & New Year's. As much as I'd like to go back to the Caribbean, a week off of work just ain't happening.

:) I got to work that fire too, and make nasty amounts of money again...one of the houses burned was a guy in my unit...we were on the phone with him and could hear propaine tanks explode in the background.

MikeSTI 2004-07-20 09:36 AM
