Kevin, Chris, weren't you guys just talking about HKS parts for Subies? Something to the effect: "HKS makes great parts for everything but Subarus!"

Nick Koan 2004-07-26 10:42 AM

try checking the i-club reviews section. Some people like the product, but it sounds like it might not be the best out there. Also, it looks like there is a DP for the 04 STi, if you really want it.

"Not bellmouth or divorced wastegate" What does this mean? are the downpipes the same for the WRX and STI?

the HKS down pipe is just a factory replacement pipe with out a cat in it; I wouldn't want it :?

All down pipes are better then the HKS except for the stock DP w/ cat  PM's not recieved yet :?

edit : Look at the Perrin (devorced waste gate) as an example of design.
Now look at the Invidia (bell mouth) as an example of this design.
Last but not least look at the APS (High Flow Turbine Outlet).

This should cover just about all the different designs avalible :D

witch way is better I think is based on goals

I would never get an HKS exhaust... they supposidly make "fake" 3'' exhausts... plus their mufflers bottleneck:

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/e...ustsystems.htm

If I were going to get any exhaust, I'd get something from rnrracing (www.rnrracing.com). I have their cat-back for my DSM and it's strait as can be, full 3'', SS mandrel bent.

That's a good point, anything that's going to bolt up to stock pieces will have to match stock diameters. So there is potential for bottle necks as Ryan described. However, I don't know what the deal is the the WRX specific parts. I've got a complete turbo-back exhaust, and it won't mate to any stock parts... it's all or nothing.

Also, HKS is a bit notorious for lower quality and higher prices on their Subaru parts.... while the opposite is true for their RX-7 parts... go figure.

murphy 2004-07-31 10:58 PM

Yes most are hitting it right on the head. HKS really caters to the high end cars of japan and as much as we all love subies they arn't considered on the same level as supra, RX-7, skyline, and silvias. They have put lots of money into the evo program and have taken the Tesu. time attack record with an HKS preped evo 7 with NOB (red hks silvia in D1).
subaru seems to get the short end from HKS
if you can get the parts Do luck, jun auto, and Aqua make good parts for subie.

Sam, I really think that you should stop searching all the "JDM Bling" companys, and start looking at companys here in the states. Remember, the Japan STi is a different motor, so their products werent made with us in mind. I would wait it out for Vishnu, Vivid, Cobb, ect. to get their stuff out on the market and go with proven performance. But thats just my .02.

i like other products that are not jdm...like the perrin stuff is realy good, i just like the look of the HKS carbon cat back, and from what i have read is the downpipe it the only bad HKS pruduct for the exhaust. and they may be differnt motors but i am sure they do research on our STI also.

I would like to have the "best" exhaust but i am getting a SUPER good deal on the HKS and i can always sell it if i dont like it....anyhow i dont feel that i need exhaust to be the fastest out at fernly on the 29th  jk but it should be fun :!:

ArthurS 2004-08-02 07:43 AM

I won't ever go with HKS again after getting their up-pipe. The welds were horrible with beads of weld on even the inside of the pipe.

Why the hell would you pay for a piece of shit? Cuz it's a cheap price for a piece of shit? Did you ever wonder WHY it's cheap? Just spend the money now and get a good piece of equipment. You'll just end up spending more in the end.

W3rd. I got a good deal on the HKS I bought, but didn't realize the poor quality until I got it. I didn't eventually lose any money in the end, but did have to go through the crap to sell it.

I would just save and get what you really want.

MikeSTI 2004-08-02 03:27 PM

and if you still want big power you might even check out the APS 3.5"

IheartSTI 2004-08-02 03:47 PM

hey mike i dont think i need more power to prove i can beat you  jk hey bobby(threerotor) showed me a downpipe that just opens up when u press a button what do u think about that?

means more parts to break. It's just an effin pipe. a piece of metal which through very hot air goes through. the simpler the better, IMO.

I'd say thats too big, plus you'll kneck it down anyways with the exhaust. If you run that big, you'll lose a bunch of low-end torque. Not fun for normal or autocross drives.

Libila 2004-08-02 10:56 PM

Your talking of an exhaust cut out Sam, and its not worth it. The real time pipe is very expensive and it will leak. If Im wrong here please correct me, but arnt the STi exhausts pretty free flowing as is?

No, the STi exhaust pretty much sucks. But the HKS offers no improvement other than removing the cat, and that doesn't make all that much of a difference.
