So what would be a good rental car to enter? Does Avis have any C6 Corvettes in their fleet yet?

My car is not eligible for entry without major modifications-- I was told that S2000s are too fast for Solo I and that I would have to install a restrictor plate to be legal for an event.

We can stretch som RE92s on your wheels. That'll take care of it. 8)

Good one,
Maybe a co-drive. Maybe the supertrapp beast or with someone else?

Theo 2004-09-27 02:54 PM

I don't think the Ghia is legal for trials. It's in the EP class and must have a cage to run Solo Trials, if I'm reading right. Too bad, it would be fun.

With the gearing I have I doubt if I could hit 100 MPH downhill with a tail wind.

So, what's the travel schedule like for this weekend? Dean, Debbie, when are you guys leaving? Scott and I will leave Saturday morning this time, and go straight to the track.

Dean 2004-09-30 10:31 AM

I think Debbie and I are trailering the WRX our Friday, running Sat., Going to get her car with the trailer Sat. PM in Winnemucca, and back to lovelock, and run at least Sun. AM. then dirve both back...

MattR 2004-10-03 04:12 PM

So!!!!!!!! I just got back...what a crazy weekend in Lovelock...Seemes to go by really fast as we didn't get out there until Saturday morning...

Saturday Went great, Dean ran the Stealth, Scott and I ran our normal cars, ans Debbie drove the Stealth and Jim's RX7. 22 entrants total, Dean scored 9th, I got 10th and Scott got 11th....So we wre all pretty content with Saturday..

Sunday, different Story, Scott Pulls something special out and lays down an ultra fast morning run, winning SM over Dean and an Audi. I ran second, had a decent 2 runs....then on my third run, disaster struck...I was carrying 4th gear in a long left hand sweeper, when I got loose and went off course!!! Definately gave me a huge scare...the car is a little banged up as I hit some big bumps in the dirt. My left tie rod is tweeked slightly, my rim and brake are scratched, and my lower bumper drivers side is busted. I've never gone off at that rate of speed before, I'm told I did everything right, I though for sure I was going onto my lid...Scary stuff, but it was good to keep me in check I guess.. I opted not to run this afternoon, as my steering is iffy...I'll be cleaning dirt out of my car AGAIN  But all-in-all I'm fortunate...Regardless of my "exit" I had a blast as usual, the Solo Trials are a ton of fun...

Scott has some pictures of the car after I went off...

Anyway, Dean and Debbie aren't too far behind me, they are towing the RX8 home  The car looks worse to me than it did in those pictures...

See ya

JC 2004-10-03 04:27 PM

Damn Matt that sucks. Your STi is getting thrashed. Glad you guys had fun and every one is alright though.

dknv 2004-10-04 09:11 AM

Matt's car was screaming fast thru the infield on that run. Then he became 'RallyMan'.

As was discussed in the afternoon drivers' meeting, that was probably Matt's fastest run up to that point, and carrying more speed around the corner changed where the car was on the line (or not). I think, Matt, you were also trying to keep from driving over the timing lights, otherwise, maybe you would've just driven over cones and kept going. Anyway, thank God you kept it straight. Also, all our 'off' cars are lucky the dirt was soft, if it was still hard packed, you might've gone further & gone into a ditch or a mound.

Good times. And we got the RX-8 back to Reno with band-aid stuck on drivers' door (pretty cute, whoever did that).

MattR 2004-10-04 10:58 AM

Yeah...Crazy times....

Debbie, I saw that band aid on the car when i went to get gas, I thought that was pretty funny...Not sure who put it on there

ScottyS 2004-10-04 11:11 AM

Wow, Matt. That's one way to find the limits, I guess! Good experience with minimal damage?

"10-4, glad you kept the greasy side down, good buddy!"

MikeK 2004-10-04 11:16 AM

Matt I hope whoever buys your car when you end up selling it doesn't find this post :)

 You got that right... Everything's okay...

My mechanics that do our truck alignments were here this morning, so I had them check out my front end, as I thought, I was toed in a bit, which caused the car to go slightly right...A couple twists of the tie rod and we're back in action...all for free.. To the eye, you can't tell there are any bends, but I guess there was a bend to it. It feels good now. I'll pobably get a full alignment after this weekend's autocross...

I don't think I'll have a need to sell this car...But yes, you are correct... i gotta say one thing, this STi is a bad-ass car...It's tougher than hell.

LetItRev 2004-10-04 01:48 PM

Hey Matt,

Sounds like you guys had a blast out there. Glad to hear you're OK.

sperry 2004-10-05 04:18 PM

It looks like it was to be a glorious weekend for our intrepid Subaru drivers:

Even Dean, who wasn't driving the Little Red Rex, was still so excited he was popping wheelies all over the place:
[img:d50f97a6fb=400]http://www.seccs.org/gallery/Autocross%20Events/2004-10-02%20SCCA%20Solo%20Trials%20at%20Lovelock/Dean%20pops%20a%20wheelie.jpg[/img:d50f97a6fb]

The event went well, till Matt decided to "test" his AWD capabilities... the piggies weren't pleased!
[img:d50f97a6fb=600]http://www.seccs.org/gallery/Autocross%20Events/2004-10-02%20SCCA%20Solo%20Trials%20at%20Lovelock/Dirty%20piggy.jpg[/img:d50f97a6fb]

Just some minor damage to the bumper, and some scratches on the wheels & brakes:

And loads of dirt all over that thing!

Both cars were very cool... I really like Noel's Audi... Hopefully Noel and Gilbert make it to our board, they're cool guys,..

Those StopTechs are teh hotness. How did they feel on track? That's what we have on the front of our racecar, and they work great for us...

I've still got a minor issue w/ the pedal feel seeming too soft, but the car stops NOW anytime you get on 'em, and there isn't even a hint of fade. I friggen LOVE them!

Since I've started getting into the higher speed events, it's easily the best mod I've done. Even a stock car would benefit from a set of StopTechs on the track... it takes out the biggest worry I had (brakes going away) and adds a layer of saftey, since you can brake at 80% all day long and have that extra 20% more in case you f-up a corner and go in a little deep.

sperry 2004-10-06 04:15 PM

Here's my fastest lap... maybe Dean can learn a thing or two, since he's half a second behind me, on race tires. :P

Austin, what size does the race car have, and how much does it weigh?

Scott, the STi master cylinder will solve the pedal issues. With the smaller MC piston size, you get more travel for a given amount of brake force. Plus I'm pretty convinced your MC is fuxored anyway.

The MC is fine. The brakes work great, and are very consistant... they just have a lot of pedal travel. I figured out how to heel-toe differently so I can do it while the pedal is down near the floor. I'm actually using the top/side of my foot now to press the throttle

MattR 2004-10-07 09:10 AM

Sounds like you have evolved.

They're 13" rotors, 4-piston calipers. The car weighs in the neighborhood of 3200lbs loaded.

Adjusting either the pedal arm ratio or the M/C piston size will change how much travel the brake pedal has, if you want to change it.

sperry 2004-10-07 09:39 AM

Austin, the Mustang kit looks identical to the one on my car:

'04 STi BBK:
332mm (13.07") x 32mm (1.26") Slotted two piece rotors
ST-40 4-piston calipers (red)
SS brake lines

I'm also using the StopTech Club-Spec race pads for track use, which are just about the cheapest race pads I could find that have a stock rear WRX fitment.

These brakes are unstoppable, er... extra-stoppable!!

OK, you beat me Sunady, but I nee to put up a little defense here...

I beat you by 2.8 seconds Saturday, so I think I win for the 2 day overall event... :P

You drove very well, congratulations.

What is very interesting is that despite my worsening fuel cut out on Sunday around the north turn around, I still posted faster split times on that end of the course according to Matt... I do not know where I lost all that time on the south end...

Gotta listen to the video I guess.

In watching the video, Scott was very smooth through the mess at the end of the straightaway...before turn around 2...I think he gained a lot of time there, I seemed to be a bit choppy, but began trail braking just a bit and smoothed it out.

Also, his car is totall flat around the turnaround, and on the power very early, I know that's where he killed me...I lost most of my time in the turnarounds...

MattR 2004-10-07 12:50 PM

And of course, my line on the 3rd Sunday run was not the fastest

[Grunholm]The driver had a 124 in him, but the damn car could only get a 126[/Grunholm]

No need to get defensive! ;)

I think my WRX has a significant power/weight advantage over the Stealth. I think you'd have creamed me if you drove my car.

That said, I was very happy with my runs on Sunday. I really picked up a lot over Saturday, which is expected I guess since Saturday was my 1st Solo Trials event ever. I don't think I pushed the car as fast as it could go, simply because I was a little anxious about keeping it under control. Even on my fastest lap, I lifted in several spot where I'm sure the car could have gone flat out (listen to my throttle in the offset on the back section, especially on the way back after turn around #2). I think my car was capable of a 2 minute lap that morning.. but I certainly wasn't.
