Nope, but I'll keep an eye out along roadside ditches and around telephone poles. Young kids with STis tend to "park" them there. :P

MattR 2004-10-25 03:45 PM

Sam? Silver STi...

We might know him, what's his name?

lzykid4life 2004-10-25 03:46 PM

yea, sam marson

dknv 2004-10-25 03:46 PM

It's been awhile since I've seen him, but he has been to some of the meets.

dknv 2004-10-25 03:47 PM

When did you live in Carson? (I used to live there too.)

lzykid4life 2004-10-25 03:52 PM

I moved to sacramento, about a year ago.

How bout a lil short asian kid named Andy with a white rex?

Libila 2004-10-25 05:48 PM

I know Sam. Sam's STi is having transmission problems, or so I hear.

Look whos talking short guy. I would like to add I am not that short for an asian person.

lzykid4life 2004-10-26 03:50 PM

Haha sorry Andy, Yes I am just as short as you.

Libila 2004-10-26 05:58 PM

Lazy kid, who are you? I've met Andy before through Bobby.

lzykid4life 2004-10-26 09:52 PM

my name is Andre, just kinda started posting and going to the sac meets since the beginning of summer (moved to sac last year). I used to live in Carson city but never went out to the meets because i was much younger then all the other Subaru owners and would feel weird if I went to the meets with my Impreza L.

Evo Mike 2004-10-26 10:38 PM

STi having tranny problems?!?! wth?

Hmm, white subaru L? Did you go to CHS?

lzykid4life 2004-10-27 07:01 AM

Yes I did, maroon one, really the only one.

Libila 2004-10-27 08:30 AM

I mean no offense by this but are you a shorter asian guy? I think I remember you from high school.

Nick Koan 2004-10-27 08:36 AM

Jebus, is everyone in Carson city a short asian male? I think I might need to move there.

i dont think many 16-17 year old kids have STI's... and mine is still running perfect.

Libila 2004-10-28 07:31 AM

Sam, notice how I said, "or so I hear." Rumors are always floating around. When I had my 2g there was a rumor that my car a 2.4L swap

I don't understand why you got so upset about the rumor. At least you know your car is running well, and thats all that matters.

I was curious though, which coilovers did you install? Was it a good idea to install them on stock struts? And whats wrong with your tires and brakepads? Or are you just wanting to upgrade them?

You'd be supprised, there are actually quite a few. It's almost scary. You may be the only one around here, but if you check nasioc, i-club or clubwrx, you'll see that there are quite a few.

Uhh? Are you just joking? I hope so...That would be a bit of overkill as far as dampening goes... Springs Maybe?

I'm confused... you certainly can put a ride height adjustable spring perch and a 2.5" spring over a stock strut to lower the car. However, you'd be spending quite a bit of money for what you get, you'd wear out the stock strut in a few months (assuming you're lowering the car more than an inch), you'd be vastly underdamped and/or bottoming out/rubbing, and you'd probably have alignment issues. So, unless the ride-height and spring rates are near stock levels, it will probably be bad. The only advantage over just getting new springs would be that you can corner balance the car.

So anyway, as far as damping is concerned, I'd call that "underkill"... stock struts aren't up to the task of controling stiffer and lower springs. Anything harder or shorter than the STi pinks (or equivalent springs) aren't good for the car.

MattR 2004-10-28 09:26 AM

Thank You...

I think he's referring to the coils/ stock struts seperately though...I was refering to running both systems at once...overdampening.

I think he means sleeves on stock struts.

Libila 2004-10-28 01:19 PM

Sam called me last night and told me, "I installed new coilovers." Then later in the conversation he said, "I'm saving up for new tires, struts, and brake pads."

I'm just going off what he said.

Could this contribute to his post in the Tech Section about camber problems, or is it just the alignment ninjas at it agian?

IheartSTI 2004-10-28 01:39 PM

i got coilovers from guilbert for 100 bucks so i went ahead and bought them because i knew i could sell them for more then that if i did not like them. when my car was stock i was having camber problems. i had positve camber so i decided to lower my car with new springs so i could get a litter better tire ware and it would look a little more agressive. the car still had ware on the outside of the tires and i was able to notice by eye that it still had a little bt of positve camber and guilbert from guilsons said he had a set of ground control coil overs for a 100 bucks. so i went ahead and got them and installed them. the car now has a little bit of negitve camber witch i want but because of the height of my car(very low) my stock struts are not doing them what i want them to do, so i am going to go with the tenabe 5way ajustable struts. the cars alinement is fine but the car is a little bouncy. i took a couple corners to see if the car handled better...it did handle slightly better but i did not put the new coils in the back yet(just the lowering springs due from lack of time) so the car is getting some understeer. i think when i do the coils in the back it will tighten up the rear of the car so it will be a little looser(right?!?) i am sure with the new struts with the ground control coil overs it will do the job for right now, it will give it a little better handling, more agressive stance and get rid of my positve camber problems...in responce to libala, i need some new brake pads, mine are prety wore out, and as well as the tires.

MikeSTI 2004-10-28 01:52 PM

I think it may just be the driver

is it just you front tires?

understeer = outside tire ware :?

IheartSTI 2004-10-28 01:54 PM

i meant takico 5 way ajustables

understeer=outside tire ware?? so me getting my car to have some negitve camber then it will help right?

Dean 2004-10-28 02:13 PM

Unless it is significantly different thatn the WRX, or you have very stiff springs (read as 7K or higher), ride heights should not be below about 14" from wheel center to fender lip, or you will start eating front fender liners under hard cornering.

Again, assuming no defference from the WRX, Stock alignment should be

Front: 0 Toe, 0*25' Camber
Rear: -1mm Toe (In), -1"30' Camber

0 toe and 1-1.5 degree of camber all around is a pretty good setup, with flatter ebing better in the winter for snow/ice traction. This is probably why stock front settings are so flat.

And yes, assuming your new springs are stiffer than stock, puttin in the rears should stifen that end of the car wich will loosen it up.

While Subaru claims the increased rear toe on the WRX is for better cornering, it actualy makes the car understeer more.

In general, and to a point, standing up a tire gives it less traction in corners, and more negative camber gives it more traction in a corner at the cost of straight line braking/acceleration, and street tire wear.

Dean 2004-10-28 02:17 PM

quote="scoobanader"]i meant takico 5 way ajustables[/quote]be aware 5 way adjustable only measn there is a know with 5 positions controlling either rebound, or buumnp and rebound, not 5 different adjustments on the shock... I'm not sure I can even think of 5 way adjustables...

Ride height
Spring preload
High Speed Bump
Low speed Bump
Rebound

Wow, true 5 way adjustable wuld be so nice, but very complex to adjust I think...

Libila 2004-10-28 02:25 PM

I would think you would want a better strut than Tokico's. I hear good things about the Koni Yellows, and I'm aware that they are more expensive but well worth it.

I don't want to sound like a dick Sam, but I really think you should look further into modifications before you buy them. Also, you really shouldnt do half of a job. Take the time to get the entire thing done. That's just my .02

sperry 2004-10-28 02:32 PM

my reply's here:

http://www.seccs.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=30715#30715

Tokicos aren't terrible (I'm assuming the "5-ways" are actually 1-way, 5-position struts), especially considering the lower cost, but yes there are better choices out there. Koni DA's or SA's would be awesome... ask Nate@S-Squared.

I'm trying to direct the tech info to the thread in the tech forum. Unfortunately there's no "merge" moderator function on this board, so I can join the two threads into one. :(
