I vote for Wed...but I'm always interested...hehe

sti deede 2005-01-18 02:41 PM

Yay! One for wednesday. Anyone else?

Dean 2005-01-18 03:06 PM

I tried sushi many years ago, but it was just a single roll of some form that did not agree with me.

I want to try again with people who know the stuff, and the shared all you can eat thing sounds like a good idea since I can swipe a hunk of many different things.

If you promise to be nice to the newbie, I'm in.

Nick Koan 2005-01-18 03:10 PM

All you gotta do is pick a time and place, and I'll do my best to be there :p

Another vote for wednesday.

sti deede 2005-01-18 03:11 PM

Sweet I'll be nice. Hopefully it's not the seaweed portion of the sushi that disagreed with you.

MikeK 2005-01-18 03:12 PM

Do these sushi places have anything besides seafood?

Yes, I have wimped out and had Teryaki and/or Tempura chicken, steak, vegies etc. on a number of ocasions at Sushi places, though they will likely make fun of you... :)

Technically, Sushi isn't fish, it is seasoned rice. Fish is just a common ingrediant. But some have no fish at all i beleive.

yeah, but it's not okay to eat it at the bar when it's busy...They get annoyed by that...Like Dean said, you can get chicken or something...But all the sushi has "seafood" in it...

Okay, there are like 2 vegetable rolls, and tofu, and Egg...you can knock yourself out on that crap if you don't want Seafood..But I wouldn't recommend that...gosh.

Yeah sushi would definately be pointless if all you ate was non-seafood items.

Go get him Deede...

There is also the Texas which is beef and cucumber..

I am learning a little...

sperry 2005-01-18 03:41 PM

Sushi roll names are pretty arbitary... the only one that seems to be pretty universial are "California Rolls"... and even then it's not always the same thing from place to place.

For example:

The "Tina's special" at Sushi Club is called a "Jewish Roll" at Woo Chon's. And the "Woo Chon Roll" is known as a "Godzilla" at Sushi Club... and the list goes on:

SC to Woo Chon conversions:

Mountain = Volcano
Sushi Club = Crystal Shrimp
Godzilla = Woo Chon
Tina's Special = Jewish
Caterpillar = Viagra
Wayne's != Wayne's (They make them differently)

And of course both places have item's w/o an equivalent at the other place... and it's like this for pretty much all restaurants.

Nick Koan 2005-01-18 04:09 PM

Actually, a Woochons' Jewish Roll is slightly different then a Sushi Club Tina's Special. The Jewish roll is tempura without any jalapeņo. But they do both come with salmon and cream cheese.

(at this point, most of these items aren't even Japanese food, but Japanese styled)

Also, if you ordered a Texas at Woochon, you'd end up with a mess of (I think) scallops, crab and shrimp plus some other tasty bits. All cooked, but not exactly beef + cucumber.

Dean 2005-01-18 04:36 PM

Aha, here is another good resource.

MattR 2005-01-18 04:43 PM

the old owner of Woo Chon, Won, was the man, he'd make BBQ Pork Lettuce wrap Sushi things...OMFG , that was the best ever...

nice find Dean  I wounder if thats way so many got sick :?: they didnt follow the proper eating how to's  "you make fun...... haha we see who get last laugh"

Kevin M 2005-01-18 05:08 PM

One more for tomorrow night. Dean, I like very little "seafood"; I tend to only order Tuna and Godzilla rolls, with like a cucumber roll or somethng jsut to get another plate to stack. Unless you have a super huge appetite, I can give you some pointers on stuff to eat that will probably agree with you if you're not into shellfish and such.

Nick Koan 2005-01-18 05:15 PM

Is it the seafood that doesn't agree, or the raw seafood? If you want pointers on cooked items (be it shellfish or not), I can also give you some.

dknv 2005-01-18 05:20 PM

omg, no criticizing now -- I like the vegetable rolls. They are good to me, because they have the seasoned rice & seaweed wraps, with no fish & crab or shrimp that I may or may not be allergic to.

So -- Mike, if you want to go give sushi a try, go & try a vegetable roll, or a tamago (egg), (which in my opinion is rather bland); I actually had sushi last week with a piece of raw scallop, which I didn't like; but was a good reminder.

And - just be careful with the green stuff.

I'm mildly allergic to shellfish, but if I can build up an immunity if I keep eating it. If I do get a break out, its usually just a mild rash on my forearm that lasts for only a day.

So, for the sake of my health, I must eat shellfish (preferably in sushi) multiple times per week.

Dean 2005-01-18 05:24 PM

I like seafood, just not overly salty like the pink "smoked" salmon. I'll try anything once, and the advantage of going with a group is I can try what others already like without commiting myself to a whole plate of something I may hate.

sp00ln 2005-01-19 01:23 AM

Too expensive, even at the back street places? Or is it a status thing there, now, sushi chefs getting paid the big bucks & such?

Yeah, it helps, but it happens so rarely now, that I don't even bother with the benedryl.

sperry 2005-01-19 02:16 PM

I was thinking of going, but 7 people for the bar at 7pm? We'll be lucky to have seats before 8:30. :(

We could just sit at a table. They do all-you-can eat there too, Or we could break up into smaller groups and eat at the bar.

Kevin M 2005-01-19 02:21 PM

Yeah, maybe we should get there at 6 or so?

I'm not gonna bother if we're at a table. Every time I've sat at the table, I've only recieved about 1/2 of the fish I ordered, and you have to wait about 60 minutes before you get your order.

sti deede 2005-01-19 02:23 PM

So what would you like see happen Scott?
Do you want to push the time up to 6pm so we might get in at about 7:30?

I never had a problem with the table, but I don't care either way.

MattR 2005-01-19 02:58 PM

There's no way you will get that many seats together, It is too much of a hassel...Maybe if the group would split into a couple groups or something...

I think I'm out by the way, I stayed home today, I kinda feel like hell, I'll decide later, but as for now, count me out, sorry.

Sorry to hear you don't feel good.

sti deede 2005-01-19 03:06 PM

I feel like a dork for trying to get a sushi dinner together. I should have remembered that too many people makes it hard to eat at the bar. Sorry for the hassel everyone. :(

Don't cancel it, there's plenty of room for everyone, you just have to be ready to sit in different spots...that's all...

I can't cancel it, too many people said they are coming. 5 people are still coming, I think. If we break up the wait shouldn't be that long. Hopefully everyone ok with the possiblility of not all sitting together.

Dean 2005-01-19 03:40 PM

I realize tables are not the preferred venue, but is it really that big of a deal? With 5, splitting into 3, and 2 doesn't sound like much fun.

Don't feel bad Deede, we appreciate you trying to organize it. Scott's the grouchy puss.

I vote we wing it. Worst case, we end up at Arby's 2 blocks away. :)

Thanks Dean. See you guys at 7. Sorry for getting all bummed; thankfully I found the pirate website to put me back in good spirits. Yarhh, where's me britches?!
