Least Favorite cars game!

Scott's thread seems to have lost its momentum, so let's try a new one. To make it harder, you can only pick 2 US manufactured cars regardless of market sold. :p

US: Yeah, uh, guess.

Results 1 - 20 of about 173,000 for SUV

Germany: Mercedes Benz 240D diesel... ug. Everytime I'm stuck behind one of these things on the road, I'm glad I don't carry a weapon, or I'd put a few rounds through the block to put all of these damn things out of my misery.

http://truffula.net/~forrest/mercedes.jpg

Europe: Volvo 240 diesel. See above. (Caveat: both of the above cars are RWD and smog exempt, which means they are awesome candidates for fire-breathing awesome mobile type engine swaps. All non-enhanced examples should be folded, spindled, and mutilated.)

UK: Jaguar XJ220 How could they make such a sweet car handle so awfully?

http://www.patleck.com/quebecrpm/jaguar/xj220-2.jpg

Japan: Toyota Echo Slow, ugly, crappy, and gets no better gas milage than the Corolla that only cost $1200 more. Fail, unless you're a 17 year old girl. Footnote: GIS says that in Canadia, Toyota Echo = Scion xA, which narrowly missed winning this category anyway. :p

That is a pretty good parking job.

You're bagging on the Toyota Echo?

Yeah, those thing suck ass.

In addition... the XJ220 was a crappy car to drive... *but* it was the 1st production car *ever* to go 220 mph! That's like saying the SR-71 was a shitty plane because it leaked fuel on the tarmac... Form follows function man, that car was designed to do one thing: go 220 mph... hense the name. And it did it. Perhaps if it only went 90 or something I'd agree with you.

sperry 2005-06-08 09:47 AM

Here's my list...

Dodge Durango (US)
http://www.autogaleria.pl/tapety/img..._2003_01_s.jpg
The more tricked out the Durango, the bigger the prick driving it.

Runners up: Ford Explorer (started the whole SUV crazy) and Pontiac Aztec (still the worst looking vehicle ever made. EVER.)

Mercedes 240D (Germany)
http://truffula.net/~forrest/mercedes.jpg
Kevin hit the nail on the head. Awful car, and the reason why we hardly see any turbo diesels in the states, even though new ones are just as clean and more efficient than gasoline cars for commuting. That's how bad and lasting this car had on the US public.

Yugo (Europe)
http://www.subrew.com/library/yugo/yugo_rear.jpg
Yes it's cliche... but this was the best engineering that Yugoslavia could offer the rest of the world. If I were Yugoslavia, I would have shot myself in the head... which is essentially what happened over there isn't it.

Jaguar XJ12 (UK)
http://www.einszweidrei.de/jaguar/xj121984-01.jpg
"Ohh... it's luxurious! Ahh... V12 engine!" I'm sure the superficial investment bankers of the 1980's loved this icon of power and prestige. Too bad it ran like ass, broke more often that it worked, and cost 10 times too much to repair than it should. Although, it's not that bad looking of a car, it get's my vote for the worst thing to come out of England since the Rolling Stones circa 1980+.

Honda Civic (Japan)

Ok, so the Honda Civic is actually a world class, excellent car. I'm not saying it sucks. What does suck are the things that people do to these poor cars. I mean really, W. T. F. is wrong w/ people? A dragon? And I bet it's his daily driver for his commute from mom's basement to his job as a stockboy at Walmart.

I hope that bottle on the ground next to it is there 'cause someone threw it at that car.

BTW: I found that picture GISing for "Honda Civic"... I didn't actually have to search for "rice" or "atrocity".

Nick Koan 2005-06-08 10:09 AM

No pictures, cause I'm lazy and pictures of lame cars doesn't excite me

US: H2 (Durango coming in close second). 'nuff said. Yes, I like seeing those drive around my neighborhood and feeling like I live in war torn eastern europe.

UK: Triumph Spitfire. Amazinly cool car, but nothing but headaches when trying to rebuild them.

Japan: Nissan Skyline R34. I used to love that car, but now I hate it. It's every ricers wet dream, and I am so sick of hearing about how cool it is. Actually, I still like the car, I just hate that everyone else likes it :p

Germany: Mercades anything. Horribly mediocre cars that cost 3 times what they are worth. Purchasing a car for its badge at its worst.

Europe: Yugo. Malcolm Bricklin may have had a hit bringing Subaru to America, but he failed horribly on his second try. His obsession with small cheap cars leaves much to be desired.

Holy crap dude... stock Toyota Echo =!= stock Mazda Miata. Not even close. Damn near any car can be made into a cool low-budget racer, that's hardly the point. Besides, I don't see any SpEcho ( ) classes around here. Every Miata I've ever seen was cooler than every Echo I've ever seen. Maybe you just picked a really bad example of your point. :p

I could care less about top speed man... I'll never, ever, ever have a street car going more than like 145-150, and when I do that it'll only be chasing lap times at RFR. :p The handling of that SUPERCAR was bad because it was always understeer or snap oversteer, with precious little in between. You'd think that one could engineer one or the other out quite a bit if not completely, and then it wouldn't totally suck, just not be very good.

No, my example is entirely accurate.

Echo + Spec Rules Preperation = the Vitz Cup car races I posted

Miata + Spec Rules Preeration = the Spec Miata race I posted

Just because the stock Echo doesn't stack up to a stock Miata doesn't make the Echo a worse platform for a spec race series. In addition, I would hardly call the Echo the worst car ever made by Toyota. Hell, look at the current $56,000 Land Cruiser... that used to be an awesome off-road truck, but it's become just as bad as all the current bloated SUVs. I'd much rather have 5 Echos than one Land Cruiser.

Kevin M 2005-06-08 03:43 PM

Dammit, it's my thread, and I called it "least favorite cars" not "least favorite cars that don't make good race platforms." :p All along I have tended to ignore race-only cars and race prepped cars. Almost any car we mention can be a cool race car, that doesnt make it a good car in the first place. Okay, maybe the Jaguar and the Yugo don't, but still... ;)

Again you miss my point.

Just because the XJ220 was a poor handling car, it goes 220 mph in stock trim. Bitch about it's handling all you want, it did exactly what it was designed to do. My example of the SR-71 still holds true. Would you call that thing the worst plane because it couldn't out manuver an F-16?

If you want to pick on a Jag, pick on the XJ12 like I did... that car was a heap, and it was specifically designed to be a high-class luxury coupe... it was exactly what is was designed *not* to be!

I'm just trying to follow the spirit of the rules: pick the worst car from each marque. If a car's got one or two amazing qualities, I find it very hard to consider it "the worst". To me, the worst car is the car that does nothing good, even if it doesn't fail miserably in any particular category.

Well... then explain to me again how the Echo is so terrible? The Vitz RS is sporty, quick, and affordable... even if it didn't make it to the US. Or maybe you mean that the *base model* Echo is the worst Toyota ever...

...in which case I want to say that the worst Mistubishi ever is the EVO because the base Mirage is so bad.

I can't find pics either:

1. AMC Matador
2. AMC Gremline
3. AMC anything!

Wait a minute - I used to own a durango and loved it! I guess I'm a prick!

Is that a dual engined car? Turbo 4 for the front, V8 for the back? In a yugo, with Hoosers?

How does that not torque itself into a singularity?

Nothing against the car really, but most of the owners.

I don't know, but I'd sure love to find out :D

Kevin M 2005-06-09 01:28 AM

Aaron, there's not enough Yugo left in that car to count. :p

Scott, the thread is called "least favorite cars" yes? And how hard is it to find a truly ass car from Japan these days? It's my least favorite made-in-Japan automobile. Sheesh. :D

There's a badge, and some Fiat 500 sheetmetal somewhere. That's close enough for me :D

The thing I can't figure out is why it has Subaru logos inside.............;)

Edit: Strike stupid comment about that inline motor being a Subaru one...

I was wondering the same thing.

But of course :p

Oh, and I've changed my answer for Japan. My least favorite Japanese car is either the Isuzu/Chevy Aveo or the Isuzu/Chevy Equinox. Or perhaps the Toyota Cavalier.

sybir 2005-06-09 02:25 PM

I'll definitely go with the Toyota Cavalier. Some J-body jackass actually imported a Toyota Cavalier to use as a show car.

That's correct. He paid over 13k by the time he was done (like 2 years ago) for a 1997 Toyota Cavalier, rental spec, with 13" rims, vinyl interior, and the smallest motor available, no power options, so he could use it to build a show car.

Worst thing is that all of his buddies were raving about the "JDM Cavalier"
