New tow rig!

4 Attachment(s)
Some of you have been following my search for a tow vehicle... well it's finally over!

Yesterday I picked up a 2001 Ferd F-250 Superduty! :)

7.3L Powerstroke Diesel
250 hp :(
505 ftlb
3300 rpm redline
Long bed (this truck is ginormous)
4WD
only 51,000 miles!

The only thing wrong is that it's red. So much for blue > red... looking in my drive way, apparently 2red = blue. :(

The only question now is whether or not I rent a U-haul trailer to go to Hawthorne or not... there's no way I can buy the trailer I want in time to leave Friday night.

Two more things: first, it's weird driving a vehicle I actually fit in w/ room to spare; and second, Subaru rubber floor mats almost fit in a Ford truck if you swap driver and passenger sides and rotate one of them 180deg.

Nick Koan 2006-05-24 08:42 AM

Thats a huge truck!

Yeah, I like it though. You should definitely try to come to Hawthorne.

doubleurx 2006-05-24 08:50 AM

Very nice Scott. It looks like it's in great shape.

skimonkey30 2006-05-24 08:54 AM

sweet rimz

Nick Koan 2006-05-24 08:56 AM

It needs bronze rims to match the other red cars at our house

I got it at Jones West... it was just traded in on Saturday by one of their office staffers. So (according to the dealer) it's been maintained religiously at the dealer. Plus it's got way low miles for an '01 diesel. I should be able to go 150k more w/o any issues, and since I won't be driving it all that much or towing all that much weight, I should be good for many years to come on this thing. (knock on wood)

The only problem is that Ford did the super-quick clean job... it was still pretty messy inside. I had to spend a few hours last night cleaning up the interior to get it to "scott spec" clean.

MPREZIV 2006-05-24 09:09 AM

Good shit dude! Glad you finally found something to your liking!

We do have a couple of really nice Titans sitting here on the lot, used, but honestly, this place wants WAY too much for them IMO!

DARKSTI 2006-05-24 09:44 AM

those things can be crazy from a stop with a chip and exhaust. congrats!

Pat R. 2006-05-24 10:01 AM

Sweet truck!

Here's a trailer for sale in Folsom.

tysonK 2006-05-24 10:55 AM

Huge!

AtomicLabMonkey 2006-05-24 10:58 AM

Does it have a back-up beeper? Nice work.

rubberbiscuitt 2006-05-24 11:27 AM

Thanks for the offer, however I think it'll be a ton easier if I just rent a u-haul for the weekend... I don't think I've got time between now and Friday to get down to Sac.

Actually, I've been driving it around town since I picked it up yesterday. Once the novelty of a new car wears off though, I'm pretty sure I'll be back in the SVX. However, with the cost of premium at $3.50/gal and diesel at $3.10/gal, and with the SVX getting around 15 mpg, I think the diesel might actually be cheaper to drive daily right now. We'll see what sort of mileage it ends up getting.

Nothing's wrong with me... I know it's a great looking truck! It's just wearing the other team's uniform. :P

Congrats Scott! Now all you need is a home to keep all your toys in. :)

You don't need a back-up beeper with those things. Anything that gets in the way that can't hear how loud those things are deserves to get ran over.

I test drove a 2003 with a chip in it, I think the damn thing was faster then my STi in a straight line.

Scott, Congrats on a very GOOD truck. When I can afford a second car payment, thats what I want to get too.

sybir 2006-05-24 02:15 PM

Scott, propane injection, now.

Ya well you could buy a lot of diesel with the money you got from selling the SVX. :p Be sure to post what kind of mileage you are getting. I hear Jeep is making a diesel Wrangler, if they do I think I will jump off of gas too.

When you're ready to make 700 lb ft of torque, and 400 HP, I know a good place, Bob's Perfomance in G'ville, they're a Banks Dealer, plus my pops is a mechanic there, so I know the work is good. And I imagine fairly resonable prices. Plus for $1500 It'd be as fast as teh Frankensuby  (Although the car was built for a different purpose.)

but on a more realistic approach, the banks stuff is really designed for towing, especially with an automatic, it can make a night and day difference.

Well, I wasn't gonna touch the truck, at least not before towing with it and seeing how things go.

But, since I just towed the WRX to Hawthorne and back, and I've got some 1st hand experience with what the truck can do, I might be willing to chip it as long as the chip does what I'm looking for.

I got about 14 mpg on the trip going 65-75 mph most the way, it's not the 16-20 that people always exagerate about getting, but it is better than the WRX would have gotten if I had driven it. Plus diesel is about $0.40/gal cheaper than premium right now, so towing was definately cheaper than driving... not to mention about a billion times more comfortable.

The truck can really haul balls too... pulls the car/trailer like nothing was back there... the only difference is that you have to point your right toe a little more, and the turbo makes more noise. However, there were a few spots going up a long hill into a massive headwind where I found myself flooring it, and no longer accelerating. :(

Chris, what sort of options does Banks have for me? I'm looking to spend like $300 (give or take), I'd like something that can switch maps between fuel economy, towing, and emmissions maps. What I don't want is to turn my truck into a smoke beltching, 1/4 mile racing, tire roasting, shit-kicker truck... I just want some better fuel economy and the ability to boost things up a bit when I hit those long hills. And it needs to continue to pass smog w/ flying colors.

BTW, last week I ordered a gauge kit (boost, EGT, tranny temp) so those'll be installed late this week or early next week... I wouldn't want to start messing w/ the truck w/o at least some minimum gauges.

It happens. When we would tow MM's car up Cuesta grade with the enclosed trailer, we could only maintain about 35-40mph floored.

Pat R. 2006-05-30 06:24 AM

I have a SuperChips programmer with 2 different maps you can try out if you'd like.

Scott, I will find out for you, what you can look for in you're price range, But if Pat is willing to make a deal on this, It might be the way to go. Also, gauges are a great first mod. Diesels can run forever, but they can also eat themselves just a easily. Monitoring the vitals is important. Trans temp, and Exhaust temp should alert you to any potential problems. The Fords aren't so bad, but the older Cummins, I could never get used to waht sounds like rod bolts rattling in the oil pan.

Hrmm.... what's that entail? Just plugging into the OBD-II port or something?

Pat R. 2006-05-30 08:49 AM

Yep, just plug it in and follow the prompts.

JonnydaJibba 2006-05-30 03:22 PM

Wow that's a cool truck. And I like the fact that it can rip cars in half if you feel like it. At the risk of much inflamation, is it an inline 6? And what is the towing capacity?

Pat R. 2006-05-30 04:29 PM

A little late, but here's a sweet trailer: http://www.advancemetalworking.com/

I think the Dodge's have the inline 6 diesels.... the Ford's a 7.3L turbo diesel V8.

Slopoke21m 2006-05-30 05:57 PM

I have a Banks cardboard box thats about 2' tall and about 5' long (good for locking up the neighborhood punks in) and Banks Power fender decals, Ill take 250 for them....its worth it.....lol....actually dont know what the current prices are but the most comon mods are a Banks Monster Exhaust..(it is totally sweet sounding and really works), a OEM K&N replacement, and then usually comes the chip and new wastegate actuator. Im thinkin its pretty pricey, but ive driven them and oh what a difference....I totally roasted the tires in a Ford the other day, after exhaust and power tuner. Give Bob a call 775-782 1958....cya Louie

Slopoke21m 2006-05-30 06:01 PM

Also ask about the 6-gun tuner.
