Lovelock Autocross - Aug 30/31

Okay, who's coming to Lovelock!? Reno SCCA finally confirmed the event is a go, so those who are attending need to make hotel reservations.

I plan on going, so who wants to share a hotel room with me? I figure we can cram 3 or 4 people into a room to save some money. I can bring an air matress for myself, so a room w/ two double beds should be fine for at least 3 (at $12/night), but 4 people drops the price to $9/night each.

2nd issue, are we going down Friday night for the welcome party? It'll mean a second night in the hotel. I'd like to go down and party on Friday, mostly so we won't have to drive a long way Saturday morning then race immediately.

One other thing to consider, this is the weekend right before the trip to Laguna Seca for the ALMS race.

FYI: The Hotel's phone number is 775 273-2971. You can ask for the SCCA rate ($36/night) which is half the regular price.

Here's the Reno SCCA Announcement:
Quote:

Eric,

Would you please send a group email advising that we will be using the airport in Lovelock, NV as the site for our August 30 & 31 Solo 2 event. The Pershing County Building and Grounds Supervisor has reviewed our request with the County Board of Supervisors and they are in agreement. John Evans and I will be required to meet with the Board on August 20 to review insurance with the District Attorney and answer any questions however this is a formality that is not expected to interfere with our event.

A few highlights of the event are:

Welcome party Friday evening at the airport with the gas powered blender fired up and running on the rev limiter plus beer, wine and snacks.

A challenging course laid out on 2400' of excellent pavement including an 1100' section of runway 75' wide and 1300' of taxi-way 35' wide. Participants can expect to see a combination of fast segments and technical segments on a gated course that will test the limits of every drivers skill.

An optional no host banquet on Saturday evening at the hotel casino.

Additional information, event registration forms and banquet sign-ups will be available soon on the Reno SCCA web site.

It is suggested you make hotel reservations immediately by phone at (775) 273-2971. Request the special SCCA rate ($36.00 plus tax) when making reservations.

Thanks,
Dave Deborde
Lovelock Event Chairperson

I think I am in. I will find out on monday or tuesday. Is there anything special about this race or is it just another race with some perks that is a way out?

sperry 2003-08-18 03:44 PM

Okay, I've got a room (non-smoking, 2 queen size beds) reserved for two people Aug 29 and Aug 30 in Lovelock at $36/night. So whoever's coming can cram in there with me!

We may be able to figure something out, but Evan, Colin, Ben, and some more people may be coming also. May need as much room as possible. I know that will b Evan's last autocross in the RenoSCCA and it will be Ben's first autocross in his 2.5rs. And I will be having 2 drivers on my car.

Is anyone doing the banquet on saturday night?

sperry 2003-08-22 03:29 PM

I'm hitting the banquet... I figure, there aren't too many choices in Lovelock, might as well dine with the group!

Dean 2003-08-25 07:18 AM

If you even remotely plan to go to the banquet, please email Dave Deborde TODAY and let him know...

They really need to get a decent count to the hotel...

That's funny, my "hippie Subaru" gets 15mpg in the city, won't pass smog, is loud enough to frighten birds away, vents brake dust that is a known carcinogen, and has 300hp! I must be the coolest hippie evAr!

sperry 2003-09-01 11:06 AM

Lovelock was dope!

The track consisted of three legs, one out a taxiway, one down the runway, and one back in the taxiway. The wierd part was that because the runway was "active" when a plane came in, we'd have to run around tossing cones off the runway so the plane could land! Luckily we only had two planes come in... one early before the event started came in to refuel, and another later during the 2nd run group (iirc) for a touch and go.

The Saturday course was really difficult. Tons of cones and DNF's. It had a lot of long, fast straights interrupted by very tight, narrow chicanes and hairpins. Very difficult, but not necessarily "unfair" or a BS hard course. You could go fast, but only if you had a lot of balls to really push it on the straights and lots of precision to get it thru the small stuff.

The Sunday course was changed quite a bit. In addition to running the course in the opposite direction, Dave also opened up the course a LOT. Times were a good 10 seconds faster on Sunday! Most of the spots that had been tight corners were now additional straights, connected with some high speed transitions. I almost lost it on the starting slalom... my stock springs allow for a ton of body roll on fast transitions, and I must have fish-tailed it 3 times before finally hauling the car back into control!

The only problems with Derby field: it's small... there's very little room for the paddock and grid. It's also in the middle of nowhere... no food or anything for like 10 miles... I had no idea it would be so isolated, so I didn't pack a lunch, thanks to the Evans, Debbie and the Debordes for spotting me food! Finally... there's rattlesnakes at the airfield... you gotta watch yourself out there!

It looks like the Hawthorne event is going to be moved to Lovelock. The people there are really friendly, the Ramada's a decent hotel (happy hour domestic beers only 50 cents!!) and the pavement at the airfield is pretty nice. So everyone'll have a second chance to do a Lovelock event. Plus, it looks like we're going to be trying to pull off the show-n-shine that event, so I'll prolly need as many SECCS people as possible!

I'm about to upload some pics from the event... they'll be up here shortly!

So who won STX? and how many ended up competing?

Oh yeah...

I beat Theo on Saturday, (we were the only STX cars there) and took 6th in PAX. (Surprised the hell outta me too, since I felt like I "left some on the table" on my fastest run..)

On Sunday Theo couldn't run because his back went out. :( So I won STX Sunday too, but since I was the only car there, I only get 11 points!! This makes the STX champoinship potentially closer! In fact, I'm not really sure if I can beat Theo now... I don't totally understand how the drops work, but if I'm the only one left in STX this season, then I may not be able to earn enough points to beat Theo.

So... Matt and Tyson.. you guys need to show up so I can beat you! :P

MattR 2003-09-01 08:06 PM

Ok, I'll run STX , and if I recall, last time I showed up, you didn;t beat me :D , is theo ok?

If you run the STi in STX, I won't complain... but I'm still assuming you don't know how to drive it fast yet...

MattR 2003-09-01 08:16 PM

you're absolutely right, I can tell its going to take me a few runs to get up to competitive speeds in this beast. but at least running A Stock, I'll still be in the same run group.

I'm just starting to really push the car, (as much as public roads will allow, safely) and I can tell you that this car is in a whole different world as far as handling and balance goes. I love it more every day, but the power can turn it into a handful very quickly if I'm not careful...a few days of autocross will really help me out, I can;t wait.

sperry 2003-09-01 08:46 PM

Okay, here's some pics!

Day 1:

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of cars racing... I was either too busy or kicking it in the pits w/o a decent view of the track... But I do have some video footage from some of my runs:

Day 1, Run 2
Day 1, Run 4 <-- tanked a lot of cones on this one... 2 in the 1st slalom...
Day 1, Run 7 <-- this is the run that PAX'd 6th.

Day 2, Run 3
Day 2, Run 6
