High Speed ISP

So, its time for me to order some high speed internet for my new house. My roommate has Charter Digital TV. So, I was thinking about just ordering their high speed package.

But, I thought that I would ask here first.

Which ISP do you guys have, and how have their service been for you?

cody 2007-06-27 07:46 AM

In my area, Charter is the only way to get faster than 1.5Mbps. I signed up for a package that includes 5Mbps. Charter sucks (they will screw you if you let them) but if you get a package deal, it can be a decent value.

Dean 2007-06-27 07:54 AM

I'd go DSL if it is an option in your area. My DSL has been great compared to the crappy charter service I had for years.

NevadaSTi 2007-06-27 07:57 AM

OK Dean, which service provider does DSL around here?

I've always had Charter when I was down in G-ville. But now that I am next to Red Hawk Golf Cource, I was thinking that there might be some other options out there.

cody 2007-06-27 08:00 AM

AT&T

eggeegg 2007-06-27 08:03 AM

I pay for the 3Mbps but for this whole year they're giving a promotion of 5Mbps for price of 3Mbps. i couldn't tell the difference between the speeds doing daily internet browsing and torrent downloading but according to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ it really is faster.

you do feel like you're getting ripped off by Charter though, especially with their digital cable deals.

DARKSTI 2007-06-27 10:16 AM

We had SBC/ATT and was paying for 6mbps and was getting that, then one day I was getting 4.5mbps-5mbps . We called and they said it was our problem even though I tried everything (including new modem and router), it never improved for 2 weeks so we switched to Charter 10mbps and it has been awesome. 1mbps upload isn't bad either.

edit:I forgot to add, the day after we canceled the service, we saw two ATT trucks working on the box that sends out the signal(cant remember what its called) down the street.

cody 2007-06-27 10:56 AM

That's probably where I learned it too. :)

tysonK 2007-06-27 04:28 PM

I just got SBC DSL 1.5 Mbps

So far I am tracking at 1.276 Mbps

I get that number from speakeasy and speedtest.net

I guess I'll call them if it doesn't improve, my modem is at least 2 years old though so I might need to upgrade.

van 2007-06-27 07:57 PM

I've had countless issues with sbc/yahoo over the past five years being a DSL customer. I'm moving this weekend and finally giving cable a try. If you live in Sparks you will most likely be close to the bottom of your package speed range with the dsl. I've been paying for the 1.5 to 3mbps package for the past 2 years and and I'm currently getting 1.3x on the speakeasy speed test.

DSL sucked in northwest at MAtt's house too. Switching to cable TV and interwebs was the best thing ever.

nevermind... fuck cable, these assholes have given me the runaround since yesterday. If I don't hear back from them tomorrow I'm going back to SBC. I've spent no less than 3 hrs on the phone with these people with no resolution.

I know a few people who have unlimited data plans on their cell phones and use them for their Internet access. Not the fastest, but works for them...

and I'm jealous. I have the unlimited data plan but I would have to buy some pricey thingamajig to connect my phone to my notebook plus pay an extra $15 a month for that service. If the cable peoples would just install my services or at the very least call me back I would be happy.

What phone, If it is new and has a USB port, they are ultra cheap-free if I have a spare. And even older phone cables can be found on ebay for cheap, and the extra fee is often only if you want their email etc. If you can browse to normal web sites on your phone, then they have no way to know the difference. You just need the cable and driver.

van 2007-07-03 07:48 AM

sweet. my phone is the xv6700 on verizon,it has the small usb plug I use for docking. I'm gonna look for the software during lunch today. problem is I won't be able to download it to my pc.

And you could use thumb drives and CD-R(w)s to move data if necessary...
