Van's car problem thread

problem 1.-
Steering memory? when I turn left and straighten out the wheel, the wheel wants to stay turning left, same with turning right. If I loosen my grip on the wheel it turns on its own wichever direction I previously turned. I thought it was because of my broken ass steering rack bushings but I've replaced those and the problem is still there. I've noticed my front swaybar was stuck to one side the other day, I knocked it back into place, haven't checked it since. Can a stuck front sway bar cause my wheel to pull in any direction? Or do I need a new steering rack? I can't find anything loose under the front end but that doesn't mean I haven't missed something.:?:
problem B.-
I took my car out for a spirited romp tonight and was noticing a little bit of hesitation. I have an ej20g with a reflashed/VOS ecu and a stock WRX fuel pump (my car is a 93 imperza BTW). Whats the limit of the WRX fuel pump? I hit 16psi boost and it doesn't appear to be a boost leak by my trusty boost guage. Am I hitting the limits of my fuel pump? This doesn't happen all the time.
Thanks for the help, sorry if this doesn't all make sense as I'm tired and watching Lost and drinking beer as I type this:)

sperry 2008-03-13 09:08 PM

Not sure about the hesitation, but if you end up with a problem in the rack, I've got most of a WRX rack in my garage I can set you up with. It just needs some clean up, some fluid lines (you should be able to use the ones off your old rack) and a some boots.

van 2008-03-13 09:12 PM

Awesome! thanks Scott. I still need to make an offer on your rear hubs/disc setup too.

Well, I feel like I owe you big for letting me borrow that engine lift for so damn long, I'm sure we can work something out.

MPREZIV 2008-03-14 06:54 AM

If there's nothing in the suspension/mechanical portion of the steering that you can find that's binding, I'd definitely be looking into the rack. Murano's do the same thing you described, and I find myself replacing racks in them to fix it.

Kevin M 2008-03-14 07:41 AM

Van, after I swap my newer steering rack into my wagon, you can have the old one. Nothing wrong with it, I just suspect that the one from my parts car is a slightly shorter ratio, and I know it has fewer miles.

That might be better for me, I think the wrx rack needs a little modding to get the linkage connected. Does you parts car have a rsb by chance, I gotta go to picknpull tommorow for lat. links and whatnot. I will buy em from you if you have them.

Kevin M 2008-03-14 09:21 AM

One of the rear links was bent, and I sold the other one, sorry. I didn't even get links for my own L out of it. :( I should have the rack out of the wagon within a month or so.

van 2008-03-14 10:15 AM

Thanks Kevin,
So does anyone know how much boost the stock wrx fuel pump can handle?

Kevin M 2008-03-14 10:23 AM

It can handle about 275 horsepower. I can think of no reason not to upgrade whatsoever, except for the cost. Even if it's perfectly healthy

van 2008-03-14 10:35 AM

The guy who had the ecu before me had the same setup I have plus fmic and vf28. He put down 233hp on a mustang dyno, Ive heard sti's put about 210-220 on mustangs. I'm on the stock tdo4 so I'm sure I'm nowhere near 275. I wonder if I'm gettin clogged in the tank or in my fuel filter... or if my tranny is finally going kaput.

Dean 2008-03-14 10:41 AM

Just upgrade it! Cheap insurance... I did, Scott didn't (not that he didn't try) You make the call. :)

I plan on it, I'm just looking for a place to point my finger for this inconsistant acceleration:)

Probably tuning actually. If your AFRs aren't leaning out at peak torque, it's not your pump.

The ecu is tuned for my setup, the previous owner went to the dyno just to make sure he wasn't too lean, and the problem isn't always there:?:

I didn't say it wasn't tuned for your car, I said it could still be a tuning issue.

cody 2008-03-14 03:05 PM

I upgraded mine and I'm on the stock turbo. You're not likely to need it up here, but at sea level, you could see 100% IDC's at high RPMs.

IDC has nothing to do with fuel pump capacity.

cody 2008-03-14 03:38 PM

I was told that it would lower them a couple percent.

Kevin M 2008-03-14 04:20 PM

More pressure can reduce IDCs. But pressure is regulated by the fuel pressure regulator (yeah, duh) not the pump itself. The pump either can or cannot flow the volume required to maintain that pressure at max IDCs. If it can, then a bigger pump has no effect on your tuning, it's just a safeguard. If your pump can't flow enough to supply the fuel required at max power at the pressure that the regulator is trying to force, then upgrading your pump does make a difference.

cody 2008-03-14 04:38 PM

Yah.

van 2008-03-20 04:20 PM

Holy hell,

found my newly developed boost problem(all is good till 14psi,hesitates a touch then 15/16psi is smooth). Acting on a hunch, I figured I would pull a random spark plug and have a look before I head out to class tonight.

Anyone got any spare ej20g or svx coils? I gotta check the rest this weekend

Kevin M 2008-03-20 07:20 PM

There are one or two EJ20G partouts on nasioc in the GC8 private classifieds forum.

I tried em both. I might have to do the wrx coilpack mod/hack.
seriously anyone got any coilpacks. or 4 modern wrx or sti packs? cheap?

Kevin M 2008-03-21 02:45 PM

I *might* have some leftover, I can't remember if I ever sold them or not. I know I do have a complete '02 EJ205 engine harness if that interests you...

I'm crossing my fingers, and I will pay! I'm already in debt to you for that smog passing exhaust. If you want my first born let me know*

*first born eats a lot of food and may need braces.

Coil for ya.

Kevin M 2008-04-14 05:46 PM

Already sold.

sybir 2008-04-14 06:28 PM

Hey, I tried.

van 2008-04-14 07:34 PM

Thanks for the help Sybir, I got lucky a few weeks ago and got for good ones from Japan for $85 iirc, just in time for the autocross:). I installed my rear sway this week, I'm gonna get 4th in novice this weekend:lol:

van 2008-04-14 07:35 PM

I meant FOUR good ones

van 2008-04-14 07:39 PM

Btw , since I'm upping my posts, the stuttering boost problem was because of a dirty ass maf sensor....or fuel filter? I replaced the filter and cleaned the maf and all has been well since.

sperry 2008-04-14 09:16 PM

"ass maf sensor" eh? What does that sense?

I don't know, but I have a feeling that burgers are like 87 octane, Mexican food is edging up towards 91, and cabbage is like running leaded race gas with no filter element on the turbo. ;)

That sounds more like an AMF, Ass Mass Flow sensor.

:yuck:

van 2008-05-28 10:28 PM

well it happened, the L tranny finally took a shit. 1st and 2nd gear have no power and a shitty gears spinning sound. Gonna have to limp it for a couple of weeks and hope they're cheap at pick'n'pull, probably going to miss the next autocross too..........suck

cody 2008-05-29 07:04 AM

Sucks man. Could you swap to a WRX tranny?

van 2008-05-29 07:38 AM

Sweet!, I just went out and jacked up the front of my car in my pajamas.I appear to have broken my F R axle shaft. I will replace that this weekend and hope thats all that is broken.

I could but it would be too expensive by the time I switch everything over to the hydraulic clutch setup:( .

cody 2008-05-29 07:41 AM

Gotcha. Hope it's just the axle!

Kevin M 2008-05-29 07:59 AM

Front axles are like $65 new with no core charge, or you could probably get 2 at D&D for that much.

van 2008-06-02 08:03 PM

$35 at D&D. Nice guys too

van 2009-03-22 12:55 PM

My coolant reservoir has broken, Anyone know if a gd wrx one will fit on my old rex engine?

The top tank or the overflow tank?

...I think I've got a spare one of each if you'd like to try 'em!

van 2009-03-22 02:01 PM

The top tank, the plastic(on mine) tab that the overflow line connects too broke off. I would like to not have another epoxy fix job in my engine bay:). If you get a chance can you take a picture of it?

The spare I've got is the older metal style tank. I had to switch to the newer plastic style in order to clear my intercooler piping.

I'd have to move 3 cars and dig through boxes to take a picture and it's cold and dark now, but I can do it one of these evenings this week for ya. But it looks like this one:

Kevin M 2009-03-22 08:06 PM

I have one in a nice convenient easy to access location Van, but I'll need it (or another) back soon.

van 2009-03-23 03:40 PM

Thanks Guys, I Might have to fab up a bracket to secure it, and get new hoses. I will look around online later tonight to see if anyone has switched them before. Off to my garage!
