WTB Springs
Well, I think I am going to buy a set of springs in the near future, so I thought I would see if anybody has any old sets laying around the garage. Its a 2006 WRX Sedan, let me know what you have, even old STi takeoffs. Thanks...
|
Nobody...
|
I think a buddy of mine has STi stockers sitting in his garage... I'll check with him.
|
Sounds good. Those seem to be the best bang for the buck option in terms of performance. Thanks
|
Hmmm.....
I think I might be that buddy Cory is talking about, either way, I have a set of 05 STi complete take off's that are just sitting here and they only have about 16k on them, if you want them gimme a call.....I'll PM you the number.

Sweet! What do you guys think? Decent upgrade for a stock WRX? Im, geared more toward performance increase rather than looks and I definitely cannot afford coilovers. Next upgrade will be sways.

Hey, Van....no its the diamond white and yeah, they are pretty rare around here, I've seen 2 others and they were a nighthawk black one and a taffetas white one they are both tl's and not the type S, interestingly.......I saw more of them in SLC this weekend than in Reno in the month that I've owned it. Cory, thanks for the call on Friday....it made my day.......since the "other" person had to be reminded!

http://www.harmanmotive.com/catalog/...oducts_id=1742 I realize those are the 04 springs, but they don't have a way to select WRX vs STi in the 05-07 category (and the STi spring rates are way to high). Those spring rates don't seem too terrible, around 236f and 220r. |

Thanx. I think that everybody chooses the GF210 04 version because the 05-07 version has way to stiff spring rate. The drop height is the same.
|
not that it matters or applies to you but I ended up getting gf210's for my gc, for the old school cars the only better are the p1's. With Tanabe springs you can become "parking lot champion" at work just like me:)

I can deliver...to Squaw Valley at least...a NIB set of GF210 for 2005 STi fitment.
|
Thanx Paul, but I think that 2005 STi GF210's would annihilate my stock WRX struts. Unless they are the 4.3 front and 4.0 rear spring rate.

How many miles are on your struts now? |
I have about 32k on my struts right now.

He has at least 2 AGX's, that's fer sho.

Thanks. So what do you guys think...Paul@DBTuned has a set of GF210 springs from an 05 STi (Tanabe has the same springs for 05-07 STi's and WRX's.) The breakdown on these is as follows
Spring Rates 5.8kg/mm Front / 4.4kg/mm Rear Lowers the car 1.0in Front / 0.5in Rear That seems like a really high spring rate for WRX struts...The other option would be to get the 2004 model's which are like this Spring Rates 4.3kg/mm Front / 4.0kg/mm Rear Lowers the car 1.3in Front / 1in Rear So, the question is do I get the 2004's and run them until the struts die naturally circa 60-80k or do I get the 2005 STi ones and blow my struts faster and replace them like I will probably have to in 30k or so anyway? The reasoning being that I will have the stiffer STi springs when I have to replace my struts. |
It's a shame that the lower rated 4.3/4.0 springs lower the car so much. Those look like the better rates, but I wouldn't want to lower more than 1"f/.5"r just because of the poor suspension geometry and reduced tire clearance you get.
|
So what would be your suggestion Scott?

...but seriously, I guess I'd rather have the springs match the struts better, even if the car's too low. Being underdamped and bouncing all over the place sucks ass. Best solution is really to get the stiffer, taller STi springs and a set of KYB AGX's that you can dial in to match the spring rate. But now you're talking near coilover dollars, in which case just get some Tein Flex's. |
I see the logic, but since when do Flex's cost under $1600

My point is that if you're spending $500 for struts, and $300 on springs, you're getting into coilover price ranges. People used to be able to pick up a set of Flex's in the $1200 range. I believe the Megan Racing coilovers are decent and under $1000 today. My other point is that slapping lowering springs on the car usually make it look better, but hurt ride quality. So I wouldn't bother doing the springs unless you can do either springs soft enough for the stock dampers, or get proper dampers for the spring rate you're getting... thus getting back to the whole AGX+Springs costing about the same as coilovers. It all boils down to what you're looking for. If you're looking for performance at the cost of comfort, then spend the extra money on some coilovers. If you care about comfort over all-out performance, save a few bucks and get some AGX's and springs... they'll handle great, and be a ton more comfortable than the higher spring rates that coilovers have, plus you'll have $200 in your pocket. If all you care about is lowering the car (which isn't the case) just drop $200 on springs and drive around in a bouncy car. |
Well, coilovers are out of the question for me because I don't think I want to drop the coin (that I don't have) on cheap coilovers. Ultimately, I don't really think that I could afford new struts right now either, which sort of negates my other post about the stiff STi springs. IDK, I want to stiffen the car up a bit make it more fun for the twisties and autox and maybe a little bit of a drop. I suppose I could go with the new MachV springs or prodrives. I also plan on getting f/r sways before next season.
Thanks for the advice, I know I tend to run in circles about things and beat subjects to death  |

You're just going to have to get lucky to end up with a set of STi struts that don't blow out in the rears quickly. Lots of people have that issue w/ them. :( Plus, you're not going to make the car look any better w/ regards to the ugly wheel gap. Lowering springs that don't match the struts will likely handle worse than STi takeoffs, and will likely wear out the struts faster than the take-offs will last (assuming relatively low mileage takeoffs). My opinion is, if you don't have the $800+ for new matching struts and springs or coilovers, your only choice is stock struts. |
I think I may do that because I have somebody willing to sell their STi stockers right now. The well gab kinda sucks but for a better performing car I can deal with it. And that should leave me a little money for sways! Thanks for all your input Godfather Scott!

1/2 Johnny's kyb agxs
1/2 some guy on rs25's kyb agxs 100% gf210 |
i have some 02 tanabe maximum performance springs for sale. but i dont think they will fit your car.
|
My buddy has been running Crucial Racing springs on his stock 04WRX struts for a year or two now and says it handles good and rides nice. They lower the car quite a bit but when I moved from Eibach Prokit to them, I noticed a big improvement. I think they're out of stock right now though.
