End Result of a Fight With a Curb -

Coming back from the store last night, I took a turn with the wetness on the road and I guess my inexperience driving, I slid into a curb. Some people have done this before, but I did mine with a grace of style and overall stupidity.

So basically, the car is fucked. Rim and tire is destroyed, and the axel and strut are bent to hell. Car goes to the dealer today.

Boy did I teach that curb a lesson. And BTW, this was no street racing or stupid driving. Just a simple turn that got FUCKed. Oh Well. You learn from mistakes in life. I just learned not to take corners fast when there is wetness around.

I guess I hit the curb hard enough to send the rim into the body to leave dents!!!

So, my car is going to be out of comission for awhile. Might be driving a big ass truck. :(

tysonK 2003-11-02 11:53 AM

 OMG.

that's freakin horrible.

I'm glad no one was around you and also got stupid and hit you.

Yah sometimes I get to over-confident with my AWD at slower speeds. With my old NEON the car was light and the brakes did a lot more when you gripped the road at all. My WRX is so much more heavy although AWD got's my back for some stuff, it's the little things that I sometimes eeek out a little slide.

Don't feel too bad, many people have slide into curbs you are not first I think the first slow/slush wet day is really bad because the piled up sediment from fall is still kinda on the street and not washed to the side of the road much so it might be even more slick.

sorry man.

when i chipped up my rim at autocross I felt pretty bad, I'm sure you are pretty mad, but in time everythings cool.

BOO 2003-11-02 11:55 AM

Damn Art,
I am sorry dude....
Maybe we should make a Thread This winter called "WRECKS" ..
This is crappy for our cars to be out of comission even for a day.. much the less a long while due to wreckage :( ...
Well Good Luck with it Art.. I hope your Insurance agent wont be too hard on you ... Wait is that your other self

Edit:
Ohh by the way, Does subydude sell the wheels individually or do they all come in a set ??

ArthurS 2003-11-02 11:56 AM

I don't get mad. I get even. We borrowed a jack-hammer and we are going to kick that curbs ass!

j/k. Anyway, might as weel say, there was a moron tailing me in his truck and that is the reason I attempted to tack that turn at about 25 mph. Should have been fine, but the wetness and the ABS decided to screw me over.

MattR 2003-11-02 12:44 PM

OMG! Dude! Where did this happen ? I'm sorry, glad its fixable though.

ArthurS 2003-11-02 12:53 PM

This happened at the first turn into my house. Some guy was tailing me in his truck....so I took the corner at my normal speed, but the water on the ground sent me into the curb. Only reason everything looks so bad is because I drove it like that for about 2 blocks. I did not want to leave it on the side of the road.

It is fixable. I am putting it on the trailor in a few hours and taking it to the shop.

sperry 2003-11-02 01:39 PM

Holy crap!!

That sucks man... hopefully the repair won't be so bad, since you're an insurance guy and all.

Note to everyone... those tires that say "max performance" are *NOT* for winter!!! Put your M+S or snow tires on!!! Azenis, Kuhmos, etc do real bad in the snow... and even if it's just cold, those tires lose tons of grip.

Hopefully SubyDude will be able to get you a single rim to replace that bad one. If he can't you might try getting in touch with Rota directly. I think they've got an account on NASIOC, and they're good about answering PMs.

ArthurS 2003-11-02 01:45 PM

Seriously. everyone put their snow tires on. These tires slid so easily in the wet roads.

I am not going to file this under insurance. I don't need another hike in my premiums. This will be out of pocket. So, yes, hopeully it will be cheap.

STIwish 2003-11-02 02:16 PM

Wow, that looks familiar... mine looked just about the same.. i folded the A-Arm right behind the caliper and bent the fuck out of the entire drivers side assembly. My damage extended back along the rocker panel and drivers side door and into the rear wheel well, where I destroyed the rim as well. I also totalled the front bumper. BTW, my quote to just get the front suspension back together was almost $2k, so good luck man.

Driving on Azenis in the cold is like having lego blocks for tires.

Sucks Art, time to upgrade the suspension.

sybir 2003-11-02 04:06 PM

If it helps, SubyDude is closely related to the Rota rep on Nasioc (like, cousins). I think Rota is sending another crate soon, I'm sure if they still have Formels they can throw something in. Joe will be able to work somethin out for you, though.

Sorry to hear about the incident.
I live way down the hill, and I still swapped over to my winter stuff and off my Kumhos a few days ago, it's not worth messing with. Good luck getting it fixed; call the guys at S^2 if/when you need parts, becuase they have a good relationship with the recycler down there and can probably get you a better deal, and I might be able to run parts up there for ya or something. I know they're leaving for SEMA tuesday, though, and won't be back till the end of the week.

ArthurS 2003-11-02 04:31 PM

Yea, I will talk to subydude soon about the extra rim. I bought these all from him anyway.

But I am going to go put the stockers on and hopefully bend back the axle enough to get it on a trailor to get it to the dealer.

You ever toss some cafateria trays under the rear wheels of a FWD car? There's your azenis in snow...

sperry 2003-11-02 04:35 PM

Man.. I keep looking at those pics of your gorgeous rim all mangled.... makes me wanna cry.

Next time, let that retard hit you... then his insurance company can pay for the damage. :x

ArthurS 2003-11-02 04:40 PM

I really should have. Mind you, the rim is destroyed because I drove on it home. (2 blocks away). I keep looking at the marks on the road.

But I just pictured in my head someone doing the same thing and sliding into my car. I did not want that to happed.

MattR 2003-11-02 04:42 PM

Man, I'm tip-toeing around on the cold slick pavement right now, the 070's really loose a lot in the cold, the tire feels so hard. (no laughing), I'm, looking forward to gettting some winter tires on tommorrow.

Yeah, I can imagine.... I remember how bad my Kuhmo 712's got when it dipped into the 30's! Those 070's have got to be worse!

Hey Matt. let me know what you go with in terms of Winter Tires.. Cause I am looking as well ...
Ps:  Funny Quote.. Thank God I NOT only drive a suby.. i drive VW as well as Mitsu ;) ... lol

MattR 2003-11-02 09:54 PM

I will either have Nokian's or Dunlop WS on tommorow. I had the Dunlop Winter sport M2's on the white wagon, (the tires I sold to Art) and I really liked them a lot, they performed flawlessly. The only other tires I would even consider are the Blizzak lm 22 or the Nokians.

BOO 2003-11-02 10:43 PM

What do you think about Dunlop's Graspic DS-1's or the Blizzak's WS-50 ??

MattR 2003-11-03 07:06 AM

I'm under the impression that those tires are made for sedans that don;t do any performance driving, they have very soft sidewalls, so I would stay away from them for any EVO, STI WRX...Also, the Dunlop Graspics were the topic of a very unfavorable review I read somewhere, so I steer clear.

Gorio 2003-11-03 07:37 AM

Damn! Sorry Art. Hope everything turns out okay.

You should have been using Petter Solberg's wet weather Pirelli's. j/k

AtomicLabMonkey 2003-11-03 08:10 AM

Really sorry to hear about that Art.. it looks like at least the rotor & caliper are still intact. I hate to think about what a dealer is going to charge for repairs...

I will find out today or tomorrow. I'll let everyone know.

MikeSTI 2003-11-04 09:06 AM

Man I go to Sactown for 2 days and all hell breaks loose  . BTW it snowed over the pass and I didnt have any prob's on the stock tires. Guys at chain control didn't even look  . I still need to get new tires thou now that Art is giving us all a reallity check :( Hey Matt see if they give any deals if you get 2 sets of tires I'll go with you :D Those pics are horrific and dont want to post any of my car.... Sorry Art hope they dont screw you at the dealler.

dknv 2003-11-05 12:37 PM

Ow, so sorry to hear about this ARt.

I hope the weird abs problems didn't contribute. I've noticed them kicking in on my car in places I didn't want them to, over the past week -- annoying.

STIwish 2003-11-05 01:20 PM

weird abs problem!? i knew i wasnt imagining things, that happened to me multiple times when i was up there auto-xing... including my 11 cone killer run... in the video you dont see any brake lights or anything in the turn, but the wheels just locked and i slid through a bunch of cones.

That's not a "wierd ABS" thing... the ABS won't *ever* come on unless you're pushing the brake. What you experienced is called "pushing"... you turn the wheel and just slide on the front tires. Basically you're going too fast for the turn and there isn't enough traction available up front for the tires to turn the car, so you just slide straight.

When you do it real bad, it can sound just like the ABS is on. I've got in-car video of one of my runs during the last event when I did it (the video's on my PC at home, I can upload it later tonight)... you hear the tire squeal, then suddenly it just shakes to hell... the camera bounces all over the place as I hop on the front tires. All this w/o touching the brake, I was simply going too fast for the turn. As the push scrubs off speed, my traction picks back up and the car finishes the turn.

Ask Art about pushing real bad, that's how he ran over a tree.

ArthurS 2003-11-05 03:25 PM

Yep. Same way I hit the tree.

Oh and the estimate ended up being 5,300.00$ for all the work, new parts, paint, and new fender.

ArthurS 2003-11-10 04:36 PM

Well, my car is getting fixed. It should be done in a 1-2 weeks hopefully. I am getting this all done through the Lithia Body shop. I just hope they are better then the service department. So far no troubles with them.

And I have decided my car will be traded in soon after the fix. I get to skecthy about a cars integrity after the few small accidents I have been in. Me hitting the tree, me getting hit but a dumbass that fled the scene, and me hitting the curb.

Oh, and Scott at Lithia said that there are multiple subaru's in his shop due to the same type of accident on the same night! More then 4 subaru's have hit the curbs! Not to mention or friend in the 'Aerio' wrecked his car to so I was told.

Careful out there everyone.

Glad to hear it's gettin fixed...

I'm not surprised there were a bunch of wrecks... that icy weather hit us only a week after 80 degree weather, lots of people got caught out on summer tires.

STIwish 2003-11-10 05:18 PM

Ack.. what a bad month for Subies!! What happened with the Aerio?

It all depends on the shop doing the work... after you get it back you could string & measure the suspension points to see for yourself if everything is straight. When I was an 18-yr old dumbass I wrecked my Mustang (when it was still my dad's car and I borrowed it) and bent up the front end... turns out the dealer repair shop did a pretty damn good job of fixing it all those years ago cause all the front-end measurements I've been taking lately verify that the car is straight.

Wow... you've started publicly admitting that? How many years did it take, nearly 10?

AtomicLabMonkey 2003-11-11 09:56 AM

 Well that was in 1995... you do the math. Don't hurt yourself now...
