Windows 7 Laptop Deals

I ran into Joel at BB and he was looking for a cheap Windows 7 laptop. I told him I'd keep an eye out and here's what I found with a quick search.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=13029688 If you choose the first laptop on the list, you get it plus you get an additional Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade for an existing computer for $447 total. Not bad.

Or just get the laptop, alone, for $399. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=12456201

Be sure to go to bing.com and type in, "stereo walmart" and you can get 10% cash back off your purchase from Walmart.

Or here's one for $330 that you can pick up at BB. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+...=1218122295102

I couldn't get bing to offer any cashback for BB though. It was giving 5% earlier this week.

Kevin M 2009-11-05 12:02 PM

The BB link sends me to my empty shopping cart.

cody 2009-11-05 12:09 PM

Woops. Fixored.

Lenovo S12 Netbook with NVIDIA ION - Windows 7 HP, Intel 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 6 Cell, 12.1" $449 + Free Shipping.

cody 2009-11-05 01:07 PM

Great deal on an Xbox 360. $100: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/new...deal_confirmed

That article also says that there will be a laptop for under $300.

Nick Koan 2009-11-05 01:10 PM

Actually, that's an xbox 360 arcade for normal price ($199), but you get a $100 gift card. Sure, you get $100 of free stuff, but you still gotta plop down $199 on the deal. And there was a rumor going around that its only going to be 5-10 per store, not the whole inventory of 360 arcades.

cody 2009-11-05 03:48 PM

Lots of good laptops here: http://www.deals2buy.com/

I'd grab one of the Lenovo's.

sybir 2009-11-05 04:04 PM

The Lenovos are awesome. I love my S10.

cody 2009-11-05 04:21 PM

I'd get this one:

Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 - 4186CTO, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600 (2.20GHz), 15.6" HD Wide LED, 4GB RAM, 320GB, SuperMulti DVD Recordable (Tray type), nVidia Geforce G 210M graphic card with 512MB memory, 802.11 a/b/g/N, 1.3 webcam, Dolby® Home Theater audio and a subwoofer, 6-in-1 card reader, Multitouch pad, VeriFace™ face-recognition software, Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit), 6 Cell Battery, 1yr Warranty » for $629 at Lenovo(IBM ThinkPad)

It could handle gaming and anything else you throw at it. It's too bad it's got a 5400 RPM HDD but that can always be upgraded down the road.

sperry 2009-11-05 04:30 PM

Damn... laptops have finally gotten pretty affordable. How does Apple justify $3000 for their nicer laptops?

Nick Koan 2009-11-05 04:33 PM

Well, you could spend $3k on a nice Dell too (albeit with double the power of the Apple model).

But yeah, the low-end laptops (and netbooks too) have really come down significantly. The cheap-ass Apple laptop used to be a good deal at $1000 (i.e. only $200 over priced), but now its double the price of comparable laptops.

cody 2009-11-05 04:43 PM

Apple is the "exotic" of the computer world.

van 2009-11-05 05:33 PM

My internal mac vs. pc war was won last week by windows 7 and cost. So I ordered a decently spec'ed samsung notebook from bestbuy, when it showed up yesterday it somehow had a .1 ghz slower processser than it was supposed to. I sent that shit back today and I'll see how well this turns out this week.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-11-05 06:33 PM

Thanks for this Cody. I went to the bestbuy by scheels and they still had the "sale" price that I saw at the other best buy. The thing I love most about best buy is that they were dying to sell me the insurance for the computer. I couldn't see the benefit of buying a $450 laptop and then spending $265 on insuring it.

Yah, that's pretty retarded. We paid just over half that amount to extend the 1 year warranty on the HP I just bought for our Marketing manager to 3 years Next Business Day (through HP). And that was on a $1K laptop.

ScottyS 2009-11-05 09:27 PM

Performance laptops are definitely cheaper these days. My "old" ASUS G50V pretty much can do anything (including run XP!) and it's nowhere near as expensive as a Mac.....

Even then not a bad deal because mine is broken.

cody 2009-11-06 08:55 PM

I think you can swap your hard drive into the arcade and it'll be like yours never broke?

Amazon is having a similar deal today too. They did a batch at 6am (which is already sold out) and another will happen at noon. Its part of the Gold Box stuff.

I doubt it'll last long, but if you want one its worth a shot.

van 2009-11-18 06:11 PM

I got this today from best buy
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4764
last one clearance+500g 7200rpm drive+10% off= $700
so far I don't miss my macbook at all

tonight, yes.

I'm downloa.....err buying 7 right now.

cody 2009-11-18 06:32 PM

lol. Seems like a good deal despite the Vista. :)

van 2009-11-18 06:39 PM

I think it was a good deal, I dislike dell in general but the xps models are nice. I'm not digging the leather on the backsidethough so I may replace it with alligator skin or something more pimpin. baby seal fur?

Dewey 2009-11-18 09:28 PM

Van, is that laptop the Studio XPS? If so, I know two friends that bought that laptop, and after many errors took them back to get the HP equivalent. Let me know how it works for you.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-11-18 09:36 PM

I have to say that windows 7 is pretty freaking sweet.

I'm considering downloading the 32-bit version and re-doing my bootcamp partition for 7. What's the compatibility for games look like (Command and Conquer, the Steam games)?

100_Percent_Juice 2009-11-18 10:21 PM

Command and Conquer? What have you been running, windows 98? :lol: I have not played any games on it so I have no answer for you. I ran the windows 7 compatibility test on my home PC and it says that I can safely upgrade to 64bit windows7 so I might be doing that in the next month or so.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-11-20 12:03 AM

I just saw that Best Buy is selling the laptop that I bought for $50 less on black friday. I wonder what their policy is on price matching their black friday deals?

bigrobwoot 2009-11-20 12:24 AM

I heard of a trick from my old roommate where you take it back, then buy it right back from them for the sale price. It's a good way to make sure you get one before they sell out. Just make sure you're still able to return it then. I think you only have 14 days but I'm not sure.

And on the 360 arcade edition: isn't that one not in HD? My 360 is broken :( (thanks bob! Haha) and it needs a fixin' or a replacin'

cody 2009-11-20 05:52 AM

Walmart will price match a BF deal if you just bring your receipt back within 30 days, so I've read. Not sure if BB does something similar, but generally if you could just return the one you bought and buy a new one for a lower price, it makes more sense for the store to just refund you the difference instead.

cody 2009-11-20 10:16 AM

Not a Windows 7 Laptop, but a sweet deal on Aaron's favorite Netbook:

Lenovo S10-2 Netbook N270/1gb/160gb/BT $208+tax 2-day Shipped!!! 6 cell batt only +$40

Also, a great thread on some "hidden" Bing CB deals:

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1551705

sybir 2009-11-20 07:17 PM

Damn, that's a killer deal. I paid more than that for a used one recently.

cody 2009-11-20 07:28 PM

Yah, I don't know what's up with Lenovo. They've had some insane deals lately. I guess they're deciding to beat HP at their game (low prices/good specs). Hopefully sacrificed quality isn't what's facilitating it.

cody 2009-11-20 07:52 PM

I'm suggesting to my buddy that he buy this laptop for his wife:

MSI A6000-029US 16" Notebook: Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2GHz, 320GB HDD, 4GB DDR2, DVDRW, HDMI, GeForce 8200M-G Webcam, Windows 7 Home Prem $430 B&M @ Officedepot (Starts Sunday)

sperry 2009-12-09 12:20 PM

If anyone's looking for a netbook w/ the power of a laptop and Windows 7 (Home Premium, not the stripped mobile version for netbooks), check out the Acer 1410:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115656

I guess Fry's B&M had these on sale for under $400... which would be nice if we had a local Fry's to buy it from. But NewEgg's $430 price ain't too shabby.

cody 2009-12-09 12:35 PM

Dean 2009-12-09 01:03 PM

I can verify Gateways suck dingo penis. The case/frame design on my friend's is so bad that the solid heat pipe that runs over the CPU and GPU torques when you even move the thing while it is on the case flexes crushing the GPU and causing it to wig out and take the system with it. Oh, they fixed it 3 times under warranty and then refused to do anything about it. :rolleyes:

sperry 2009-12-09 02:58 PM

I'm a little surprised to see that even the best manufacturer is barely below 10% over 2-years. That's pretty abysmal. I'd expect a company with just basic quality control to have less than 5% of their products returned within the first 2 years.

I have no idea how that data was collected... all I know is that I've owned a bunch of PC's and a few laptops, and I've never had a hardware failure unless it was DOA or failed like 5 years down the road. 1-3 years has been the sweet spot for reliability in my equipment.

Then again, I've never really bought budget stuff... I usually buy one step back from top-of-the-line, or get the latest and greatest expensive gear because the office bought it for me.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-12-09 03:12 PM

I don't really think its a matter a company having decent quality control. I would think that malfunction/failure rates with most portable electronics like cell phones are higher than fixed electronics like a home line or desktop PC. How many people of that 10% like to put the laptop on their lap completely blocking off the fan or drop it in and out of a case or leave it in the car during the heat of the day?

True, but most appliances are designed with the actual end-use in mind. It used to be people accepted that owning a car, for example, involved regular mechanical maintenance. Now people demand a car be get-in-and-driveable for at least 100,000 miles regardless of weather, basic abuse, and without much thought. Similarly, portable electronics are so mainstream now that you should expect your phone to work as an afterthought... it should be tossed around, splashed with a little water, and generally abused lightly without a glitch in operation.

Perhaps devices like netbooks & laptops aren't quite there yet, but ironically as the prices come down and adoption goes up, people will expect more and more that their portable computing devices become dead reliable appliances more than high maintenance cutting-edge tools.

cody 2009-12-09 04:23 PM

Given how many people love Squaretrade (the source of the data) over on Slickdeals, they probably cover abuse as well as failure. Just a guess, but it lends credence to Joel's point.

Dean 2010-02-28 08:25 AM

OK, bumping a slightly old thread, but Señor Cheap Bastard needed a Windows 7 box for his business and could not pass up this deal... (thanks slickdeals.com)

Dual core 2.2Ghz, 3Gb, 250gb, 15.6", DVDRWDL =$298

http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/09...10_215X215.jpg

OK,it is an eMachine, and no Blue(tooth,-Ray), but I can't build a comparable desktop with no display for that.

According to the web site, only the pyramid store has any, but it may lie. 19 left when I left at 8:00am.

* Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 2.20GHz
* 15.6" LCD Display (1366x768)
* Intel GMA 4500M
* 3GB DDR2
* 250GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
* SuperMulti 8X DVD+ with Double Layer Support
* Built-in 802.11b/g WLAN
* 6-cell Lithium-ion Battery
* Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

cody 2010-02-28 10:24 AM

Sweet deal.

cody 2010-03-31 11:39 AM

Well, looks like I might be in the market for one. My 2 or 3 year old Everex seems to have died. I get blank screen, and fan on full blast when I power it on. Looking for another 17" model. Would like HDMI out and maybe "N" wireless built in. If it can game, awesome, but not required. Two HDD bays would be sweet since that's what I had with the Everex. I'm thinking my budget should be around $500 but I can be flexible, just want dependibility and a good deal.

cody 2010-04-01 11:02 AM

Pretty sure it's dead.

Thinking of picking this up to replace it:

MSI with 3 year warranty for $700 shipped after Bing.

It's actually down to $650 if the mail in rebate I found works.

Some preliminary benchmarks with the overclock button, "turbo", on and off.
