The official 2010 Solo discussion thread!
Just FYI, while all the important Club Chief and Board positions are filled, there's still plenty of room for more volunteers at events and at the monthly meetings. I'd liek to get feedback from you guys who might come out on season passes here- http://www.renoscca.org/forums/showthread.php?t=693
Any other suggestions to improve the autocross experience for us all are more than welcome. Now to the fun part- who is driving what? We all know MattR is going to show up in some sort of SuperTruck. Dean should be back out in his STi in TSM, and I will be selling the coupe at some point and running the little red wagon is TSM- without a turbo. Should be interesting. |
I just started car shopping, If nothing comes of it I'll be bask in SU.
|
ill be running 255s star specs and i think ill be moving to bsp (not sure if the sti still falls in bsp since new rules for 10')
|
Same car, but probably with rear swaybar endlinks disconnected and zip-tied up out of the way, hopefully making the car drive-able on Stead's surface...
|
TSM, but probably only a handful of events.
Silvio, do you have to roll your fenders to go that wide? Do you have an 04 or 05? |
Wes asked me if I'd be Chief of Waivers and I agreed. Sounds easy as long as I can find someobody to cover me the days I can't make it.
Same setup. I still have some meat left on the RE01R's but they won't last more than a couple events and then I'm going to try to cram 245" wide StarSpecs on there. Anyone gonna come play in ESP this year??? |

I hope to have the STI running. TSM on old 615s.

no damn clue, Probably BS, and maybe i'll take the rally car out a few times if it looks like i won't be able to attent enough events.
Can we not schedule events on weekends i have rallies ? Mar 13-14 Apr 17 June 4-5 July 15-17 Aug 28 Oct 1-2 Dec 3-5 What's that? those are the only weekends we are doing AutoX this year ? :( watch ... i bet i have at least 3 weekends of over lap due to rally, and probably an other 3 due to rallyX ... :~: If only there were more AutoX / Rally cross over drivers... I need to figure out what to do to my sti to fix my eats lots of oil problem. I'm tempting to ignore it for longer and put some new struts on the car. Ohlins or subaru Pinks as those are my only BS legal options... :?: slight chance i might use my legacy 2.2 block with my sti heads and deal with what ever class that puts me in , probably would buy some Rally coil overs at that point and go back to a stock front sway bar... car would be less competitive than it is now, but more fun in the dirt... which its already a ton of fun in... :?: hmmf |
Unfortunately between working around holidays, major events in Reno (Rodeo, HAN, Air Races, Street Vibrations, etc.) and Sac chapter's schedule, there are only like 3 empty weekends between the first weekend and last.

Rach already has an offer to drive F125 with the Burns', who may go to nationals this year. If all of that happens, my class may end up being 'chaperone'.

No fernley this season :(
I really liked it out there. Granted, it sucked when you had people mowing over a ton of cones and having to run 1/4mi to pick them up. I didn't make it to the last event out there where that was supposed to have been fixed with more corner workers. Any update on Fernley raceway?? |

The schedule has been confirmed for Stead events this year. The only question marks left are the events for August and September, which still need venues. |
bump, there seems to be alot of questions about Auto-x so ask here.
I am going to Auto-X in mather airport on sunday 21, anybody interested? anything new with anybodies auto-x setup? |
I am hoping to make it, in Nina's Mazda. Hopefully she's willing to go too. :p
|
I bought Nick P's 5Zigen 17X8 wheels this weekend. Anybody know of any deals coming up on 245/40/17 Starspecs? Looks like I missed a $50 rebate window by a little over a month. :(

Purple would be more appropriate.
|
LOL, I'm lazy. I don't really feel like painting them so you will just have to squint when looking my direction. :P
|
Bronze on yellow looks awesome, ignore anyone who says different.
|
Ignoring myself. Check. :P
They'll definitely look better than Gold on yellow...or purple on orange...so that's something right? |

Anybody bored enough to catch a ride with me to Mather tomorrow? I'm taking the Mazda down to run in street tire class, planning to leave here by 9, since the ST run group is in the afternoon.
|
If you went, how was it?
I wanted to go this weekend, but just had konis reinstalled yesterday. Then also, I caught a cold and need to rest anyway. Oh well. |
It was pretty good. The turnout was really big. It was nice to get out and start shaking off the offseason rust. The only downside is that Sac's scoring isn't automated, so I have no idea how I did in the street tire class.
|
I went today and it was alot of fun, i ran morning and afternoon gruops. it was a very big turnout, cant wait to see the resuslts:D.

Hey Debbie, or Dean or anyone who has used some Rs
how well do the 710s hold up to an autocross season? 245/40/17's I have a 29 mm Front sway , and soon i'll have my stock struts revalved more aggressive than stock will they be fairly use-able by the end of the year? I'm thinking of buying those and leaving myself the option to run the Virginia city hill climb come september (and if they allow dual car entries i'de practice on day in my rally car then switch to the sti and 710s to try and go fast) :D |
Without coilovers or other camber aids, R compounds will not last you a full season in BS on your STi. Well, they might if you constantly rotate them and flip the mounting after 4-6 events.
|
Is it just the STI? I know a lot of other people runs slicks on their stock classed cars :(
Like Debbie in her RX8 after my accident Xmass 08 my sti has -1.1 camber on each side (one side was at -.7 before) not sure if thats going to help enough. Star specs then for the win? will our reduced surface result in less grip so less roll so i won't murder the shoulders? or will be it less roll but i'm sliding on super rough sand paper and i'll ruin them even faster? :| Last year I Did7 events and let a friend co-drive once, on 3 year old hoosiers but i couldn't drive the very last event due to exposed cords... I don't think i ever got the tires turned inside out though ... ARG! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....VAN+Neova+AD08 hmmf star specs maybe cause they are cheap ... and using an R comp this year at stead will = a quick loss to anyone on Street tires... If i knew the Rs would last me till the hill climb it would be a sure thing.. hmmmf... |
Dude, I just told you. You just need a camber mod. Seriously, you need at LEAST 3 degrees, preferably closer to 4 to run R compounds. You can get away with slightly less if you have very high roll resistance.
|
Alex,
When I counted up runs for one set of V710's from 2 or 3 years ago, I got 130+ runs before I decided to be done with them. Probably the most wearing surface that year was at Hawthorne. At the time, I think the RX8 had around -1.5 to -1.7 camber, and at one weighing was around 2950 lbs. I've never flipped V710s inside out. Total wear will also depend on how smooth you drive. *Oh yeah, and what Kevin said - how much you rotate them. Since I have mine on and off at nearly every event, I'm always moving them around to even the wear. They're a Much better value than Hoosiers - and their optimum range lasts much longer too. For me, the only reason to pay a hoosier price is for those last couple of .1's or .01's, when the win is really important. |
Thinking about your question, though -- a run duration like the Hill Climb is likely to get those tires Really warm. I'd ask around nasioc for someone with an STi who's used them on a road course, to see whether there is drop off in grip based on length of time or distance. I'd really hate to see you going in to a hill climb after you've had 50+ runs on a set, then find out you don't have grip 4 miles up the hill.
|
Doesn't the RX8 have double wishbone suspension? If so, you wouldn't have to run as much neg. camber on them as you do on a Subaru...

I killed a set of RA1's in a single weekend because I "only" had -3.0 up front. Now I'm at around -3.7 or so... I'm literally maxed out negative with both the camber shims on my coilovers and the top mounts. I'm lucky that the car's still straight enough that max negative on both sides ends up being even. I'd like to be at around -4.0 to -4.5 if I can figure out a way to get a little more adjustment. I may need some camber bolts in the lower bolts of the coilovers or something. |

Awesome! Thank you so much!!! :D 130 /6 = 22 events I can get a set @ discount tire mounted & Balanced for $600 (partly due to getting their certificates and cutting two tires on various dirt drives ) did you stop using them because cords were showing? or they just lost their "grippiness" ? I see Hoosier A6 dual driven cars always spraying down their tires with water, did you ever have to do that with the 710s? did they overheat from being dual driven? I've read on some tirerack reviews that people have used the 710 on the track. But i don't give full credit to a random reviewer who doesn't do timed/sanctioned racing (maybe missing out on some wisdom ??) anyone have other Tires i should consider for around $165 ish a tire ? (knowing i also want to do a hill climb ) Obviously no one tire will be good at everything, I know for a fact Brent Blakely uses Autocross slicks at the hoopa hill climb and LOVES doing so, he holds 6 records there... though hoopa is shorter 2.2 versus 5.2 but their speeds are lower with more tighter corners... hmmf 2:30 versus 3:30 or 4 minutes could very well be the overheating point. But i do have experience with a sudden loss of traction (Busted rim .4 miles to go before the finish of stage 3 @ idaho ) though i imagine there won't be any warning at all if the tires over heat :( the RA1s are Way expensive (240 ish a tire) thanks again for all the Info. Sounds like 710s on a 3280 lbs STI with -1.1 Camber is gonna be a Gamble to have some tires left by year end, but i am a gambling man  |
Carrie and I killed a set of Hoosiers in just shy of three autocross weekends...And when they go, they go. I was running -2.7 Camber too, which wasn;t quite enough.
|
Keep an eye on them and use your in at Mr. Hubcap to get them flipped halfway through.

Nope.. I couldn't wait anymore.
