My WRX or clear trunk for your STI trunk.

Hey guys i'm looking to trade my WRX trunk for an STI one. I still have the WRX spoiler here in my house in great condition. I hate the WRX spoiler so for now I have plugged holes. If it's not too expensive I can pay to have holes filled in for you and we can trade that way if you STI owners feel like a lower profile look. The color it needs to be is the 06-07 Dark gray, not sure the name of the actual color.

Post a picture of your car, I might have seen you blazing by in-n-out the other day.

Was I fooling around with my neighbors modded Civic SI, or just driving like a mad man? I got a new 400 dollar Radar/Laser detector so i've been testing it out hehe. I live right across the street from Inn and out so it probably was me.

Clippersfan86 2010-02-02 02:28 PM

Here is my WRX. I have no photos since I filled holes with black plugs and removed spoiler LOL. I can take some if you want.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-02-02 03:09 PM

I think it was the same color but the wheels looked gold/bronze with a chrome lip.

Haha. I'm experimenting with straight piping. So far just catback but soon DP hopefully. A lot of people on forums trash talked but in person you wouldn't know it's not an Aftermarket Catback. Except I only spent 80 bucks instead of 500 plus.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-02-02 06:09 PM

carbon fiber

Hmm was it an STI? There is this D bag STI owner that has all this badging, a gay looking carbon fiber hood with like 4 non functional vents and Bronze rims to go with the Dark Gray paint. He has an OEM Spoiler though for the STI so probably not.

Yea i'm open to carbon fiber, it's what most spoilers are made of that i've found. My thing is I just don't want to spend a lot of money. I was told by a few friends from this forum that a lot of STI guys want a more low profile look and will trade straight up is why I posted this.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-02-02 08:36 PM

STI guys usually want cash unless they are desperate for a wingless trunk. Wrx trunks with plugged holes aren't too popular though.

Yea which is why I mentioned getting them filled ; ). I'll probably just stick with wingless I suppose. I like the way the STI one looks but spoilers are mainly for looks and wingless looks fine. I won't be driving over 90 MPH often enough to wish I had an STI one if I can't find someone willing to trade.

I know what straight pipe cat-backs sound like. They were popular in stock class autocross nearly a decade ago. They sounded like tractors back then too, but they were light and cheap and legal in stock class (when there was basically one exhaust on the market, the $1200 Vishnu turbo-back), so people put up with them.

But now that it's 8 years later, and there are decent sounding, cheap, cat-back exhausts on the market (the Megan Racing axle-back comes to mind)... there's no real excuse to run a piece of drain pipe over the rear axle, unless your goal is to sound like a loud-ass tractor.

Yea. It's kind of a temporary thing. I know this STI that runs straight pipes and it sounds very pretty but then i've heard terrible sounding ones. I simply can't afford even 400 bucks for a good used catback right now LOL. I spent hours on Nasioc with 0 luck. You think my video sounded bad? You're a bastard BTW for mentioning it sounding like a tractor. I paid close attention and it does ; (..... God I hate being a broke ass. The one thing I will say though is until I go catless DP, it's still slightly quieter than a Blitz Nur spec R.

cody 2010-02-03 09:11 AM

At least you didn't just remove the gaskets between the pipe segments and add washers. When I saw that people were doing that to their Legacy's, I knew the definition of rice.

HAHAH. A guy on Nasioc was swearing up and down by that telling me to do it. What I did is bought an STI axelback so I had full 2.5" piping then I had straight pipes put in catback. I wonder if it will sound good or bad when I do the catless DP lol. Figure 2.5" piping is solid until I cross 300 hp, at least that's what alot of you have said happened with you.

The catless DP is just going to make the straight pipe sound worse. You need some sort of resonance chamber to take the brashness out. The cat helps a tiny bit with that, so removing it will only make things "brappier".

I gotta think you should be able to find a Megan Racing cat-back on eBay or Craig's List for under $200...

Sorry I misposted and wasn't being clear. My Axelback is done and not the catback ( I think in my previous post I said Catback). I left the Resonator in so I could still have a nice sound. So I already do have a Resonance chamber in the Mid pipe still. I was going to do a DP next and see how it sounds.

GusGus91 2010-02-03 01:54 PM

I actually heard his exhaust today. It doesn't sound like a tractor at all. It sounds way different in person than on video.

Clippersfan86 2010-02-03 02:28 PM

100 Percent Juice I saw you a couple times an hour ago. Leaving Winco parking lot or something and once passing me and Austin when we were pulled over by CPH haha. He was in my car and we were seeing how bad my struts are. I think it was you because of the lip kit/body kit.

Tonight when we meet we can talk more about this. I'd like to know about that. My goal is just like most of the WRX guys that want daily drivers. A good 270-290 HP at the wheels would be very nice. That's good for high 12's with a good driver and I don't really have the need for more.

Totally off topic but did you guys know a stock STI is quicker than a non turbo Porsche 911/Carerra of any year? I noticed they run mid 13's and cost freakin 80-90k new! On this video in Japan this professional driver got a 12.8 in a stock USDM STI! STI and Evo definitely are up there with the MK4 Supra and Skyline as the top potential tuner cars of all time. Straight/Inline 6's and Boxer 4's FTW.

Kevin M 2010-02-04 10:31 PM

That's pretty much because very few Porsche buyers care about 1/4 mile times.

What do all those drag numbers have to do w/ a daily driver?

The goal of "WRX guys that want daily drivers" by definition is a WRX that goes from point A to point B reliably, comfortably, and/or cheaply. Bone stock is pretty much the ideal state for a WRX to be in for daily driver duty, with maybe the exception of some swaybars and wheel/tires just to make them a little stickier in the twisties.

And comparing STis to Porsches in the 1/4 mile is like comparing the cargo space of the Miata to the S2000. That's not what either of them were designed for.

I bet any Carrera is faster around Laguna Seca than the same year STi, given skilled drivers... but then again, that's not really what they were designed for either. The 911 is a GT/sports car designed for the road (with the exception of the GT3/RS/Cup versions) and the STi is a homologation version of an economy sedan designed as a street legal platform to be upgraded into a Group N rally car. Even though they get compared to each other a lot for some reason, they actually aren't very similar cars.

I wasn't comparing as if they are in the same class. Porsche has the richest racing pedigree of ANY car maker in the history of the world probably. My point was simply that for some reason I even thought the N/A 911 of recent years was quicker than a 13.5 quarter mile. I mean standard cars now are usually sub 14. I stumbled across a video of an STI racing a 966 turbo is what made me bring it up.

It just confirmed just how amazing the STI and Evo are. For 30k new you have a car that can run a flat 13, handles very well, get features found in cars costing hundreds of thousands more, Porsche level braking systems (damn things cost 3k to replace I was told by an STI owner) and tons of other things a 30k dollar car just has never had. Not to mention they are roomy sedans and get good gas mileage if you stay out of boost.

Porsche turbos are so nuts though. When I lived in OC there was a race between a modded Evo MR,Lotus Elise and a Carrera Turbo. I was shocked the Lotus got raped bad (probably AWD on the Porsche and Evo) and the Porsche literally put 15 cars on the MR like he was standing still. I couldn't even see the Porsche after 4 or 5 seconds.

Porsche's racing pedigree hasn't included F1 since 1962. That's a pretty big mark against them being considered more prestigious than someone like Ferrari. And they only recent got back into prototype racing. Porsche has never been known for drag racing. So really, Porsche's pedigree is in GT sports cars... which is exactly why they build the benchmark GT car: the 911 Turbo.

And again, so what if a N/A 911 isn't that fast in the 1/4? You probably assumed they were quicker than that simply because they are significantly better performing cars in general when compared to cars that are much faster than them at the drag strip. Straight line speed is A) not that important, B) not that hard to engineer into a car, and C) nearly useless in terms of building the worlds best street car. Now I'm not saying the 911 is the world's best, but it's damn near close and definitely up there.

As far as that Lotus getting raped... again, it's because it's a car that's defined not by its straight line speed, but because it's a car meant for turning and stopping, which are qualities that make a car about 1000 times more fun to drive than having a ton of straight line acceleration. People that drag race an Elise, (on the street no less) are retarded. It's like bringing a knife to a gun fight... which doesn't take anything away from the quality of the knife, it just makes the owner of the knife look dumb.

If you want to go fast in a straight line, get a foxbody Mustang with big slicks and a blower. It'll rape that 911 Turbo and cost <$10,000 to build.

Clippersfan86 2010-02-05 10:36 AM

Porsche has 16 Le mans championships as well as being listed (as of this year) as being THE worlds largest race car manufacturer.
In 2006, Porsche built 195 race cars for various international motor sports events. In 2007, Porsche constructed no fewer than 275 dedicated race cars (7 RS Spyder LMP2 prototypes, 37 GT2 spec 911 GT3-RSRs, and 231 911 GT3 Cup vehicles). Porsche has won a total of over 28,000 professional races since it was founded in 31'.

Yea I agree with most of what you said and i'm well aware of the fact that the Porsche's appeal isn't a drag strip. Neither is the STI's though and it manages flat 13's- low 12's while costing 1/4th the price. I also am aware that the Lotus is a track car, not a drag racing car. The Lotus is still quick though and does 0-60 in 4 seconds mainly due to the extremely light weight frame. I just don't get why more people don't buy Z06's and avoid Porsches if they want a track car. The Z06 handles better, brakes better, is MUCH quicker, is cheaper and people have gotten 900 plus HP without any engine/tranny reinforcements. Yea I'm considering getting a Fox body or a Camaro myself for the drag strip, rather than trying to build a WRX to do it all.

Would be nice to have a 250-280 HP WRX daily driver and a V8 drag strip car ; ).

BTW Porsche's pedigree may not be in drag racing but check these numbers out.

Porsche's 911 turbo from 1986 ran a quarter mile of 13.5 seconds.
In 1992 they got that time down to 13.1 seconds for the same model.
By 1993 the 911 turbo was putting down a stock time of 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and a quarter mile of 12.6 seconds. By 1997 the stock 911 was posting mid 11's. Even the N/A Porsches of the early 90's were posting low 13's.

Let's not forget Porsche isn't just a daily driver sports car. It really is a supercar when you factor in all around performance of the mid-higher end models. My only point was YES Porsche isn't made for the drag strip. But no way in hell is Subaru either. So for a 30k dollar STI to be quicker than a 90k plus Carrera off the lot is downright sad/unacceptable. I know it's a better track car but for a couple grand you can make pretty much any car with a decent weight distribution, chassis handle very well.

cody 2010-02-05 10:38 AM

Just go stage II with a custom tune and call it a day. It's the perfect balance of HP/$ and dependability.

Don't forget about suspension, wheels, tires, and SS brake lines and upgraded pads too.

The Z06 / 911 Turbo rivalry is one of the better rivalries since the middle generation STi vs EVO wars. The Vette is in fact the faster car... the problem is that the AWD of the Porsche makes it faster for all but the best drivers. AWD is a terrific mechanism for covering up poor driving skills... it also makes it harder to learn to drive *because* it covers up mistakes so well.

I'm scared to death of getting a light RWD track car and finding out I'm a shitty driver because I learned mostly behind the wheel of a WRX.

Yea I admit AWD is a fun crutch ; ). Though the best handling track cars ever have been RWD. Btw Scott not trying to stir up a debate, as I have enough of those on my sports forums heh. Just figured i'd explain my logic about the Porsche. Scott try driving a 350 torque SRT4, my last car! I would get wheel spin/hop in 3rd gear and it was super annoying. Fwd high torque cars suck bigtime. Once I got down a good slip it was decent but it doesn't have all the Torque steer protection/hardware of lets say the Mazdaspeed 3. My last cars were a FWD SRT4 and a RWD S2000 AP1 so i'm learning all the different wheel drives LOL.

Yea man. This weekend myself and Moose are putting 1 inch spacers in the rear and changing out my blown struts. I'm currently slammed on H&R's. Guys i'm really worried about 5 speed. I talked to WRX owners that were stock and broke gears. I drive pretty spirited but never clutch dump or anything. Should I be ok? I would be devastated if I had to do a tranny rebuild! I spent fu**ing 2k doing that for my SRT4 after only a month owning it.

cody 2010-02-05 11:28 AM

It comes down to your shifting technique. You should have no tranny issues staying stage 2 or even upgrading to a midsized turbo if you drive it right. Shockload is the only thing you have to worry about.

Yea Shockload is no good! ; (. It's mainly only on launches that shockload is bad right? Like when I accelerate hard from a roll I don't feel it with stock power really.

Actually, the shock-load that kills most WRX 5MTs isn't on the launch since people are paying the most attention then. It's on the shifts to 2nd and 3rd where people really powershift the car and side-step the clutch, and those are the shifts where there's a ton more boost because the turbo is spooled whereas at the launch you're not making hardly any boost.
