Not so Technical...

But I have some masking tape residue dried on my window from the last SCCA event and I need to remove it before taking my car to get tinted. What do you suggest? I've tried windex and elbow grease, and that didn't work so well. I've read that goo-gone or the like may work, but I have no idea where to get some.

Any suggestions or will anyone let me borrow some of their goo-gone stuff?

Jake

Razor blade? I use the spare box knife blades I have on that type of residue. I think I have goo gone too. You're welcome to borrow them, but I live in Stead.

sperry 2009-07-07 02:06 PM

Yeah, just hit it w/ some more windex and scratch it off w/ a razor blade.

Jeikun 2009-07-07 03:00 PM

I just dont want to scratch the glass. is there any chance of that with the blade?

cody 2009-07-07 03:02 PM

Pretty sure there isn't. But just to be safe, make sure you hold the sharp edge flat against the glass.

WRXlerate 2009-07-07 03:18 PM

That should work but if you still want some goo gone, it's available at most department and grocery stores.

khail19 2009-07-07 10:21 PM

You can scratch glass with a sharp razor blade, but it's pretty unlikely to happen if you are just scraping with it.

wrxkidid 2009-07-07 10:53 PM

you can use WD-40 too it will do just about the same thing as goo gone. Also goof off is great stuff, just make sure you are using it in a ventilated area cause its nasty stuff.

renorex 2009-07-08 12:06 AM

Clay bar may work also.

Jeikun 2009-07-09 09:56 PM

Just as a passing update, I did get the stuff off with a straight edge razor and windex. My car is all ready to be tinted tomorrow by Thomas! The hard part is deciding on color/strength of the tint. Any suggestions for my silver 08?

Hmm. How low should I get my windshield tint?

Thanks, I figured it was time for one. :P

WRXlerate 2009-07-10 09:59 AM

I'd follow the new law they are going to pass on tint. No reason to get it too dark and give them another reason to harass you. My 2 cents. The ticket will probably cost as much as it does to get your windows tinted.

What's the new law? The old was 35% max on side windows, as dark as you want everywhere else. Since I don't like uneven tint, I did 35% "high performance" (the semi-reflective stuff) all around on my WRX and have been pretty happy with it.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-07-10 10:05 AM

20% looks best and does not drastically diminish your ability to see at night while also providing a decent drop in interior temp without much hassle from the cops. IMO I think they are mainly looking for the 5% guys.

WRXlerate 2009-07-10 10:27 AM

Not sure on the new law, one of my friends that works for WCSO was talking about a while back. I think it was in RGJ also.

Jeikun 2009-07-10 10:40 AM

How often do you get pulled over just for tinting though? I mean, unless you've got 'limo tint'...

No one really gets pulled over for tint. It's more like something the cop will use to tack onto another ticket because you're driving like an idiot, or as an excuse to pull someone over that he suspects is a bad driver/street racer/etc.

Really, you're probably fine with 20% all around. Or since you've got a "wagon", you can get away with the uneven tint look IMO... do 35% on the front windows and 15% on the back/rear windows. That would be totally legal (assuming the new law isn't drastically different) and it would probably be as cool than 20% all around.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-07-10 11:14 AM

I don't think there is a new law. I think they are just actually starting to enforce the 35% and I think the RGJ article was one we already talked about in another thread. I think it mainly talked about outfitting cops with tint measuring devices to earn the city some extra money.

Weak.

Then I'd suggest going 35% front windows, and 15% rear windows. Just to keep it legal. Or go 20% all the way around and plan on re-tinting the fronts up to 35% if you get busted.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-07-10 12:54 PM

Go 20% all around and if you get pulled over for your tint I will pay to re-tint the front*.

Hahaha, good one Juice.
My sister got a ticket for the tint being too dark about 6 months ago, I think she said the ticket was over $100, it was not a fix-it ticket but a "pay the fine and leave the windows dark so we can give you another ticket" setup. Just find out what the legal limit is and stick with that.
I remember reading the thread about the instruments to measure the tint, that is what they're using now because that was how the sister got busted.

Jeikun 2009-07-10 01:51 PM

It's getting tinted now. I'm doing 15% semi-reflective all around with a strip on the front. I'll have pictures up within an hour of getting it back.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-07-10 02:37 PM

15% will look decent but at night time its too dark for me.

WRXlerate - what %tint did your sister have?
