Volunteer to help at the Reno Rally (Dec 2-4, 2005)

I will be volunteering my time in a few weeks to help out at the Reno Rally. If anyone else is interested, let me know.

Contact me (PM or e-mail: nmhansen@gmail.com) your name, e-mail, your shirt size, address and cell-phone number. I will compile a list and send it off to the volunteer coordinator. If you want to, feel free to contact the coordinator directly, (marymountdenise(AT)aol(DOT)com)

Here is a snippet from the e-mail I just recieved from the volunteer coordinator:

Quote:

Yes, we do need extra volunteers for this event and would love to have you. Now your answer to the question about what working the event entail. Would be have an open mind and be able to handle a change at a moment's notice. We would need someone to be on a control team either would be a stage start or a stage finish. Don't worry we will have you trained and you will be expereinced by the third car going by.....we will also have a worker info/trianing meeting at the Hilton Casino Hotel on Friday evening at 8 or 8:30pm. More information on that later....if you have any buddies that would like to help out as well...the more is merrier. We will have task for everyone to make this event an successful one and to get it ready for next year to become a national series event in 2006.

So, uhhh, it Starts at Reno hilton and ends in gerlach? Is that what im getting from the site? Im a bit confused....but if I show up at the hilton by 8 am saturday morn, i should be able to figure out where to spectate, no?

Nick Koan 2005-11-30 10:05 AM

I got the e-mail on where the stages are start.

Day 1 stages will be around Gerlach. Day 2 stage look like they run between Bordertown (Stead) and Boomtown (Verdi).

Nick Koan 2005-11-30 10:44 AM

More: looks like there are currently 16 cars lined up to compete as of right now, but they are expecting a few to register at the door and maybe have 20 cars compete.

I'd say the Gerlach stages will be not as desirable to spectate from. I'd try to hit up the Stead/Verdi stages on Sunday.

JonnydaJibba 2005-11-30 10:47 AM

Yeah I thought it was weird how they say that the first car leaves from the Hilton at 8? And arrives back at the Hilton at 16:00? I didn't know this was a tarmac rally.

Well, the transit stages are on asphalt, but the special stages are all on gravel

MattR 2005-11-30 11:08 AM

I'm not free Saturday, but I 'd love to come watch on Sunday...

JonnydaJibba 2005-11-30 11:17 AM

Does that mean that they will actually drive their cars that they entered to the stages?

That is the general idea of Rallying, but I believe there is an exemption for this specific event to allow trailering to the special stages.

Roger that. This looks like a lot of fun --- too bad I've got commitments already!

Im gonna sine your piddy on the runny kine......

left footed whooten 2005-11-30 01:42 PM

So, Pootie, do you know, are there going to be signs directing the tipi tais to the event from 395 or the bordertown exit or is that a nay-no my brother?

Nick Koan 2005-11-30 01:46 PM

We don't have a map as of yet. But aparently its pretty obvious according to some people, as it is a fast dirt road that is frequented by off-roaders.

Yeah, I get that a lot. Its in response to nkoans signature. Rent Pootie Tang, its funny....youll laugh later, if you like stupid funny movies.

Back to the event....So hopefully its that obvious, as I dont frequent bordertown very often. If memory serves, doesnt that area have a large floodplain after storms? Im sure they have this worked out....

sperry 2005-12-01 10:18 AM

We just got owned:

Quote:

Plan B will be in effect-

Do to weather effecting the Verdi area and the 7000 ft elevation of the stages, the decision to use stages in the Day 1 area has been made. Factors on ever changing requirements of Sierra County have also played into the decision, the storm made it final.

Weather today is high winds, rain, snow in higher elevations. Snow over night.
Friday expects snow flurries in the valley during the morning hours, clearing in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy to sunny over the weekend.

New stage format.

Day 1

1-Stonehouse
2-Nightengale
3-Purgatory Pass
Service
4-Limbo
5-Purgatory Pass 2

Nightengale Long will be ran as part of Sunday.

Day 2

1-Stonehouse
2-Nightengale
Refuel stop on transit
3-Nightengale Long
4-Stonehouse West

Time schedule to follow.
Looks like the Sunday stages closer to Reno are canned, and we'll be re-running Saturday's stages out north of Pyramid. :( If there's anyone that was coming out to spectate, I'd suggest that you make a weekend out of it, and come out to the Friday 8:30pm orientation meeting at the Hilton and get assigned to a stage! That way you'll have a ride out there, and be involved in the race. I don't think spectating is going to be very easy.

...although, IMO it's not really snowing right now, just raining... maybe they'll go back to plan A if/when they realize the road between BorderTown and BoomTown isn't under a foot of snow.

left footed whooten 2005-12-01 10:25 AM

Some of these names/roads I recognize from my Forest Service map, but others I dont. Do they connect? I assume that these are on the west side of 395 of bordertown, no? If you know, please pass along.

No, those are all the Pyramid stages...No more stages in the Dog Valley/ Verdi Area.

MattR 2005-12-01 10:32 AM

OMG, those roads at Pyramid are going to be so rutted and trashed by the final stages! What a mess. So, Scott, are you taking my truck for the whole weekend now?

I think he was gonna talk to you about that. You are probably talking about it right now actually.

It may be a long weekend.

ScottyS 2005-12-01 10:49 AM

Hmm, I guess I'll make sure to NOT go shooting out there this weekend...

If you can spare it... I hoping we won't have to work the same stages on Sunday though.

Right now Jonny and I are scheduled to work the start of Nightengale and Purgatory Pass on Saturday, which is about 12 miles of gravel off the tar, so we'll need a truck. If we don't have to work the start of Nightengale on Sunday, we might not need it, but it certainly would make life easier.

...or if you postpone your tree shopping, I'm sure you can get assigned to the same group as us and drive the Titan yourself! In fact... why isn't Carrie working too? I though she was a rally fan... I'm guessing she's just not a standing-in-the-wet-and-cold-recording-times fan, eh?

That pretty much sums it up right there...Like I said, with a little more advanced notice and some planning, we would have done it. Regardless, I have moved my tree trip to Sunday anyway due to the stage changes. You can have the truck all weekend if you need it, But I'd make sure the 4 of you split gas costs, because it costs like $50 to fill up.

You rock man, I'll make sure we return it clean and filled up! Thanks a ton!

JonnydaJibba 2005-12-02 11:31 AM

We'll treat her good. Er um Scott will because I won't be driving. Would I be allowed to take pictures of the event? Or because I'm volunteering is that no?

I'm bringing both a still and video camera.... I'm not sure I'll be able to use 'em, but I gotta guess we'll have some down time to spectate a bit.

tysonK 2005-12-04 03:52 PM

You guys see any sweet jumps?

Bob Danger 2005-12-04 07:55 PM

Jonny and I where doing timeing at the start of stage 2, after that we watched a hair pin on stage 4. Unfortinatly the good jumps where in the middle of the stage 1.

Nick Koan 2005-12-04 09:09 PM

I worked start 1 and finish 3 and 5 yesterday, which was cool, but no good jumps.

Today was the start of 1 and finish of 4 (which, on todays schedule was the reverse of 1) and yeah, there were some sweet jumps on that road.

The stage roads were incredibly fast as I was doing about 50 mph on the access road in my car and was not even pushing it. The access road, according to the BLM volunteer I was talking to, was about the same grade as the stage roads. And yes, stage 1/4 was on the foothills of the mountain range and had lots of smoothed out washes that would drop and re-rise 10-20 feet in about 50 feet of road. Made for some good jumps (I only got to see one, and not everyone jumped).

All in all, I have to say it was fun.

Rally America sounds like they were impressed, and is very likely to keep the Reno event on their calendar when it becomes official.

JonnydaJibba 2005-12-05 07:23 AM

It was cool, too bad the rally was 100 miles away.

Scotty,

here is that map of the stages. Sounds like you know exactly where they were though.

JonnydaJibba 2005-12-16 10:32 AM

I have a few pictures and 2 videos I took, but I have no way to get the off of my camera and onto a computer yet.

JonnydaJibba 2006-10-31 11:13 AM

I posted in another thread but this is a better place.

I was speaking with some of the organizers for this years event and they said that they could use all the help they can get. They are looking to form a good local support base to be able to secure Reno as a spot each year. So sign up! It's a blast and the people are super cool. www.renorally.com

MattR 2006-10-31 11:20 AM

Sounds Cold.

JonnydaJibba 2006-10-31 11:21 AM

Oh yeah forgot about that. Last year was FRICKIN FREEZING. But it was tight.

Nick Koan 2006-10-31 11:45 AM

I was thinking about volunteering again. It was pretty fun. Colder then all hell, but fun.
