Nine Inch Nails are at work on their fourth album, Bleed Through, in Los Angeles. Trent Reznor and Co. hope to finish it by summer and release it later this year.

"It's more song-oriented [than 1999's The Fragile]," says NIN mastermind Reznor. "It's much more lean. It's going to be twelve good punches in the face -- no fillers, no instrumentals, just straight to the point."

Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash) is producing the record. "It's kind of a new vibe this time around," says Reznor. "Different people, different approach.

While Bleed may be more streamlined than its predecessors, namely the expansive concept records 1994's The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, it won't exactly be light fare. "It's a complicated concept record," Reznor says, "but reduced to just simple songs. It's not epic in its scope. It's minimal and a bit brutal."

NIN plan to hit the road in the next few months to preview the new material. "It's been forever since we played," Reznor says. "I'm reenergized right now, my life's in order, and I'm ready to combat the shitty music that's out right now."

My only beef is that I really like the epic and expansive sound that Spiral and Fragile have... going back to a reduced PHM sound might be a step backwards. 'Course I say that w/o having heard a lick of the new album. I'm sure it'll totally rock.

I really liked the last two albums too, but even if it's back towards the simplicity of Broken & PHM I don't really care. It'll still kick ass, they'll still tour, and I'll still finally get to see them live.

The NIN website has new stuff on it now...

http://www.nin.com/

The Q&A transcripts are great... one of the best:

Q: "You seem to be an intensely private and isolated person. yet you can scrape out your soul and present the results to millions of people. what gives?

Trent: "shy, loner misfit type writes personal lyrics from journal figuring the world won't notice. world unexpectedly notices. shy, loner misfit type retreats further feeling unnaturally exposed."

I agree, the instrumentals were the best tracks.

AtomicLabMonkey 2004-06-18 02:34 PM

What's interesting, if you read through some of the transcripts on the website, is that Trent might be splitting his music up into different directions... separate instrumental and rock/vocal (or whatever you want to call it) projects.

You're supposed to link directly to the news. :P

Anyway, it seems that they spent a bunch of time on the 10t anniversary Downward Spiral release... I wonder if it's worth pick it up. I've already got all the "b-side" songs they're including with it... but the whole thing's been remastered. How do you remaster noise?

Also, it looks like "closure" is finally coming on DVD, but there are legal troubles getting it released. So it will probably only take them 11 more years to get it out.

Anyway. Halo 19 is called "With Teeth". It should be out 5/3/05... I had to read the friggen Q&A section to find that out. :x, but Trent seems angrier than ever.... the new album should be fun.

I'm not.... Trent Reznor is. And he's allowed to make fun of anyone, because he's got more than the government allocated amount of angst.

Yeah, so NIN is playing Reno on March 24th. Tickets sold out in about 10 minutes. I didn't get any. Fuck that.

<-- is going to have to pay eBay prices for seats, but refuses to miss the show. :x

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-02-14 11:37 AM

Goddammit. :x Let me know if you find any, I may have you snag tickets for me & Laura if possible. I need to see NIN at least once in my life.

sperry 2005-02-22 10:49 AM

Leaked track...

Halo 18 - With Teeth - Track 11 - "The Line Begins to Blur" (8.5MB)

...not all that great as a standalone song, but who knows how it fits in context w/ the rest of the album.

It's got some very good elements (which speaks well for the rest of the album) even if the track is a little off IMO.

MikeK 2005-02-23 01:00 PM

My ticket just arrived!!! Where would we be without ebay? (apart from not having scalpers buying up all the tickets to sell on ebay I mean)

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-03-08 08:19 PM

Well, we finally bought some tickets - to the Davis show, instead of the Reno show. We just couldn't make the Reno date work. :( But on the upside, I finally get to see NIN live!

If they come to Reno after *not* going to the NIN concert with us, they better plan on bringing a baseball bat or something for self-defense, 'cause I'm a gonna kill 'em!! :p

In other news, tickets for my roommate Matt and I arrived in the mail yesterday.

It that case maybe its better if Austin and Laura don't come up.

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-03-09 11:48 AM

I know, I know, it sucks we couldn't make Reno. Laura couldn't get the day off though, so we were SOL. I would have been in a world of hurt if I had said, "screw you, hippie!" and took off by myself to go to a NIN show without her. On the plus side, Kate & Scott are going to the Davis show too, so we've got somebody to hang out with up there. 8)

ALL YOU FUCKING PIGS..... MARCH!!!!!

The concert fucking rocked! Only two gripes: the opening act should have been lynched.... and there was no encore, just a single 90 minute set! :(

Set list, as best as I can remember it... I'm sure I forgot one or two songs, and messed up the order somewhere... (* = song off the new album)...

Love is Not Enough*
March of the Pigs / All the Pigs All Lined Up
Piggy
Reptile
some new song*
The Line Begins To Blur*
Terrible Lie
Closer
Burn
Wish
Suck
Starfuckers Inc.
Hurt
The Hand That Feeds*
Head Like a Hole

The bassist fucked up Starfuckers Inc. He came in a half a measure too late during one of the break-downs, so when Trent started singing, the bass line was wrong. Trent started laughing at the bassist and told the crowd "it's only the second show"... It worked out okay since the crowd just sang the lyrics the whole time and Trent picked it back up... "DONT YOU! DONT YOU! DONT YOU!"

About halfway through the show I went down to the floor and tried to get into the shit, but it was actually pretty calm... at least as far in as I got. I'm sure it was more hectic at the rail.

Anyway... I had a fun time. I'll probably go to one of the bigger shows in the Fall. I guess Trent was worried that no one was into NIN since the last tour/album was 5 years ago... so he only wanted to play small venues. But since just about every seat for every show between now and August is already sold out, worldwide... I guess they're adding a second tour in the Fall at some larger venues, so hopfully I can make one of those and hear some more stuff off The Fragile, since that's the tour I missed.

SlickNick112 2005-03-25 08:06 AM

Sounds like it was a great show. Kick Ass.

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-03-28 09:53 AM

Holy crap, the Davis show was intense. Freeborn Hall is fucking tiny, it's like the size of my junior high auditorium. Did the Reno show have the whiny angry rocker chick soloing with a guitar as the opening act? I think somebody in the band must be screwing her or something, cause she was awful.

Anyway, we had the same kind of format, no encore, but I think we had a few different songs than what you listed for the thursday show. There were at least 3 or 4 songs off The Fragile. IT FUCKING ROCKED. I'm really glad I finally got to go to one of these shows. We started out the show right down front by the rail, almost close enough to reach out and touch the band members. We were really having to kick some ass to stay on our feet up there, throwing elbows, knees, it was fucking nuts.. people were going crazy. It was such a crush up there that about halfway through the show Laura started having trouble breathing and was close to passing out so I had to grab her around the waist with one arm, and elbow, shove and kick my way backwards, carrying her out towards the back. Once we got about halfway back on the floor there wasn't a crush anymore, people were just standing normally, and she was able to recover some and we watched the rest from back there. Even there we were only like 50 feet away from the stage and still had a great view.
