Original Post:

So how many of you have Gran Turismo 4? Anybody interested in a challenge? We could designate a car and track to play in Arcade mode. Take a screenshot or somthing to illustrate your best time. When sombody holds the best time for a week, they get to designate a new car and track.

Any takers?

JonnydaJibba 2006-01-10 10:53 AM

I'm down to smoke all y'all... or something or other.

sperry 2006-01-10 11:23 AM

I'm in. Though I'd skip arcade mode.

Pick a track, and a car, and have at it. I think most people are far enough along in the game by now that pretty much every car is available to everyone, as long as you don't do something too unique.

The initial challenge over on NASIOC was any non-race/LM NSX at Suzuka. Should we try that one?

cody 2006-01-10 11:26 AM

You want to start with a Honda? :P We gotta at least start with a Subie.

Well, Suzuka is Honda's home track. :P

How 'bout this instead:

Build a car as close as possible to your actual street car, and run a hot lap at Laguna Seca. Post the mods list and best time (and a picture of the car too if you have the time).

cody 2006-01-10 11:31 AM

Well that sounds like fun and all, but I thought a match based purely on driving skill would be cool...

cody 2006-01-10 12:14 PM

What about rallying? You guys down for an dirt/snow challenge?

All the Imprezas in GT4 are turbocharged. :( If we were doing Forza, then I'd be able to swing that.

I did this one with a friend: you have a limit of $40,000 to purchase and build your car. Then agree on a track.

Rally in GT4 is the absolute worst thing about that game. If you want to do rally, try Rallysport Challenge on XBox, or Richard Burns Rally on the PC. Actually, RBR is too hard... I can barely finish a stage at 3/4 speed.

cody 2006-01-10 12:21 PM

I used to feel that way too, but then I spent a weekend rallying against a buddy with my Logitech stearing wheel, and it got A LOT funner.

That actually sounds like a cool idea.

But how about I designate a track tonight and a car to be run in arcade mode. Then whoever wins (by holding the best time for a week) can make whatever rules for the next challenge they want? Agreed?

MPREZIV 2006-01-10 12:29 PM

This all sounds like great fun, but I don't have GT4. Bastard! I could do Rally Sport Challenge 2, as Scott mentioned, but most people don't have THAT game! Shame too, 'cause it's awesome!

The only problem is that you'll require me to break my 0 minutes in arcade mode rule. :P

I've never driven arcade, and I've never driven B-spec. IMO, they are contrary to the whole point of a "driving simulator". Pick a license test instead of Arcade, that way not only will the car be "spec" you can't cut corners or anything as well.

OK OK, I'm just jealous 'cause I'm not in the club.

Cory, you're more than welcome to come over and play GT4 some evening.

Scott, you're too much man. However, you do bring up a good point about taking shortcuts. There's a major one on Laguna Seca and I'm sure many others. I've only just recently finished the B license, but I think one of the tasks was a full lap at a track IIRC. I'll check it out tonight.

As part of the super license (or whatever it's called in GT4) there's a single lap attack at Sears Point in an Audi R8 ALMS P1 car... that's a great one.

cody 2006-01-10 01:32 PM

The super license? Isn't there just four? A, B, iA and iB?

Then it's iA... whatever the one that's got tests in full blown race cars.

cody 2006-01-10 01:33 PM

Cool, sounds good to me.

JonnydaJibba 2006-01-10 02:40 PM

However it's done, I think we should pick one car and see who gets the best times for that track. Also 2 wheels must be touching the track at all times (excluding jumping) so that way people don't cut the tracks and such. I did that like twice on the GTPlanet forums. Stock Audi TT race car, Nurburgring, best time was like 6 something.

Also, I don't know what is wrong with the rally portion of the game, besides that once you get to the IA license rallies they are impossible to beat. But I think the rallying itself is fun.

cody 2006-01-10 02:43 PM

The rallying just takes a little to get used to, and then it's a lot of fun.

sperry 2006-01-10 02:50 PM

Rally sucks. Get a 900 degree wheel and see what it takes to turn lock-to-lock-to-lock... you'll ruin the wheel and still not even keep up with the input that the game requires.

IMO, they never tested the rally w/ the GT wheel. I never had a problem w/ the rally in GT3 on my old wheel, but GT4 with the new wheel is just an exercise in fustration. You have to revert to the D-pad controller to be at all competative. Why should I have to go back to the game controller after spending $150 on the wheel *recommended* for the game? F that.... I'll stick to the tarmac and play one of the 60 other games that do rally right when I need my dirt fix.

JonnydaJibba 2006-01-10 02:56 PM

Wow got some rage that needs to be let loose Scott? I use this steering wheel

Anybody want to play some mariokart 64 I'll kill all of you on wario stadium!

in all serious though I'd be down to do this GT4 or Rallisport challenge thing just let me know what track and car

cody 2006-01-10 03:43 PM

Anybody else have a new PS2 with the LAN adaptor or an old one with the external LAN adaptor (I'm assuming they made one)? Racing head to head would be fun.

Which is why you think the rally is acceptable.

Watch a replay of a rally lap and note how often you're steering at something other than full lock, or 0. It's pretty much never. In rally you have to mash the wheel back and forth. Something you can't do on a wheel.

The replays actually look pretty rediculous... with the car's front wheels snapping from 0 to full lock instantly over and over again.

IMO, GT4 is an *excellent* game, but it seriously dropped the ball with the Rally, the total lack of opponent AI (cars never attempt to avoid a wreck, hell they don't even slow down for a stopped car, and never mind the pitting on lap 9 of 10 to lose the race manuver), and the "at the limit" physics (it's near impossible to make a FF or 4WD car oversteer controllably at the limit, only FR/MR cars).

I don't expect the GT games to be all that realistic (that's what GTR and RBR are for) but they shouldn't have elements so outlandish that they take away from the fun of driving. Having to burn up a motor in my $150 wheel trying to rally, or driving a car that pushes 90% into a corner then snap oversteers when you give it the tinyest bit of throttle (and none of the settings seem to make a difference, at least not logically) takes away from the fun and show a lack of play testing.

I've got both, but my old PS2 stopped reading my GT4 disc, and decided to start rubbing the lense on the disc instead. (Which is why I picked up a new PS2.)

cody 2006-01-10 04:01 PM

Scott, you should try Rallying with my wheel. It's only got a half turn from lock to lock. I think you'd really enjoy it. It was only $30 since a connector was broken when I got it, but it pretty much kicks ass.

So what else would we need? A switch, Ethernet cables and two TV's? You can network two computers together with just a crossover cable. Are PS2's the same?

I've already got a network at my house. I think there are already 3 PS2s on it.

And my wheel has a 180deg lockout mode that reduces the sensitivity of the wheel, but without the steering assist GT4 does when you're driving with the dualshock, it's still crappy.

cody 2006-01-10 04:26 PM

All the more reason to make sure I don't win...cuz I just may feel like getting my Rally on. :P

Which is why I turn off the 900 mode when I run rally stages, its actually really fun on the 270 degree mode, but yeah, 900 degrees sucks for rally.

Not just this game, I do that for Enthusia Pro Racing too.

doubleurx 2006-01-10 04:40 PM

My GT4 wheel is not constantly lock to lock in rally mode. I love rally mode in GT 4.

Bayley and I are in.

Sometimes I think I shouldn't have sold my old 270 deg Logitech to nKoan. Oh and the 900 degree wheel switches to 180, not 270... so it gets super short... I constantly run outta wheel in that mode... though it is slightly better for rally.

But like I said, why waste a bunch of time w/ GT4's mediocre-at-best rally, when there are other games that are actually really fun offroad?

bemani 2006-01-10 05:48 PM

So which license test is the challenge on?

sp00ln 2006-01-10 06:42 PM

GT4 is only available for the PS2, right?

cody 2006-01-10 06:56 PM

Alright, so I can't do any of the super licenses because I only just recently got the B license...and there are a couple laps that I could do from the B License, but the cars really suck, and having a pace car is almost cheating anyway.

You guys can totally vote against this and decide on whatever you want, but here's what I'm suggesting to get the ball rolling.

First, I think we can trust eachother to just follow Jonny's suggestion here:

Basically, just don't take any shortcuts. If you can provide a video, great, but all that should be required is a snapshot from a digi or a screenshot or whatever illustrating your lap time.

To start, how about?

Car: STi Spec C
Track: Infineon Raceway

If there are no major objections (get over your fear of arcade mode Sperry :p ), I'll update the first post and keep it updated with the latest challenge and past winners. How's that sound?

Here's my last lap for the night... 1'27.628. I'm pretty sure I can pick up about .1 in T4, and another .1 or .2 in the last sweeper before the final hairpin. I just couldn't put it all together. I'd say a "perfect" lap for me is about a 1'27.200 or thereabouts.

Ruh Roh... is that a JDM copy? I'm pretty sure there are inconsistancies between the JDM and USDM versions of the game... let's hope the car performance and track layouts aren't some of them!

I'm kind of late just find out about this. I'll be playing tonight. When is the last day for this challenge.
