4th of July Weekend

I got a buddy coming into town July 1st through the 3rd. We are trying to figure out if we should hang out in town or do some camping. We figure most campground reservations are long gone so I was thinking maybe just some hiking and fishing during the day and some urban stuff at night. Anything going on in town that weekend or any suggestions on a good fishing spot or something?

Section of the Truckee through Verdi. Theyres hogs in there, and the conditions there are the best right now ive heard since the river is so huge everywhere.

Nice. What am I fishing for? What kind of bait should I use? Will I be able to find a good spot just by exploring around?

Nick Koan 2011-06-19 04:13 PM

Trout mainly in the Truckee. Some other stuff too.

I haven't fished it, or anything in forever, so I can't tell you what bait to use.

Thanks Nick. I think worms and lures work best for trout but I guess I could look it up. How was the wedding? Congrats to you two.

Tons of fun. Thanks!

We're thinking of checking out the opening weekend of the aptly named, Independence Lake. Thoughts? Think it will be crowded?

Hey, I remember you saying that your friend is bringing you a fishing pole. Then I remember you saying that he is an oceanographer. I have a fishing pole you can borrow if the fishing pole he brings is too big.

Edit: I had to go back and add the word fishing before each use of pole.

cody 2011-06-23 09:41 PM

Thanks. I'll let you know if his pole is too big and I need to borrow yours.

Sierra slayers (panther martins) are good, gotta be single hook on the truckee, no treble hooks. Otherwise i fish flies, streamers, big stoneflies, leeches, grasshoppers, parachute adams in the evening during hatches, its getting better and warmer.

You might want to bring some rope with you just in case. Seems like there has been at least one river rescue needed every single day on the river, so maybe you can use it to help save someone's life.

just use the 50' tow strap you keep in your car (or should be keeping in your car) :P :D

cody 2011-06-27 03:34 PM

I'm not sure if it's 50', but I do have one now.

There are very few scenarios I do not prefer to using a tow strap on a road. Other than getting a car out of a snowbank anyway.

Anybody want to make some turns at Squaw or Alpine on Saturday or Sunday?

cody 2011-06-29 08:10 AM

Man, I do. I wonder if my buddy is into that. I'll ask him. It isn't the most budget friendly move though...especially since he'd have to rent at least boots.

I think I heard on the radio that there's a chicken wing cook off downtown Reno this year? Sound like wings are around $5 for 10 wings at most booths.

cody 2011-06-29 03:49 PM

Purchase your tickets now, and Alpine is only $34 per ticket for the 4th.

Sounds like DFG has made tomorrow free fishing day so anyone can fish in CA without a license. I'll take it.
