Sand storm on 395

My paint & Glass are OWNED...

Bunch of us got caught in a sand storm on 395 Southbound at Parr yesterday about 4:20PM.

I didn't think it was bad until my windshield washers couldn't clear the "dust". With only 20K miles, my glass was very clean, now you can hardly see through it.

The front of my car all the way to the roof is pitted, scarred, and wounded. The fenders and side caught it a little. I think the trunk and rear bumper are the only things completely unscathed.

I have an apointment with an adjuster on Thurs., but want to get a couple other estimates before then.

Suggestions?:

Concorse
Gilsons? (need a phone number...)

how are those guys's prices compared to lithia paint? just wondering.. they've told me they can paint any color as long as you get the color code from the dealership.. yes, that includes, any make, bmw, audi, subaru, mitsu, dodge, etc. or so they tell me

Everybody has to "mix" the paint. The factory doesn't ship/sell paint. The color code is actually on the car, usually on a sticker in the trunk.

Lithia is actually where I am meeting the adjuster... Right now I'm looking for realistic estimates for a GOOOD paint job.

I think my intercooler is full of rocks also...

FYI in case you didn't already know, on Subarus it on the VIN info plate (the big one with VIN, Chasis Code, Engine Code, etc) under the hood near the driver side strut top.

The best work I've seen in town is from Shaber Ave. Autobody in Sparks. They do mostly classic car restorations. One of the guys I work with needed a new front end on his brand new C5 Vette, and went there *after* the dealer did a shitty job to try and get it back to factory condition. He told me the work they did was actually a lot better than the original factory job! So, when I got hit by debris on the freeway, I had them do the work on my WRX, and it was flawless. The only downside is that because the shop isn't on the insurance's "preferred" list, they will probably have to send an adjuster out there to check out the shop to make sure they can guarentee the work will be up to par, but I didn't have any issues. Also, the shop is insanely busy w/ car restorations, so it might take a bit to get in.

As far as Gilson's... they did the work on my SVX. I think they did a rushed job. There's a few spots of overspray due to poor masking on the car. Plus they ended up charging me a bunch more than my estimate w/o calling me before hand. :x However, the paint seems like it's high quality, and the car looks *much* better than it did even before the sand-damage.

yeah, I got owned too. Luckily I had just waxed the car, but the clear bra is badly pitted and my windshield is totally destroyed. I think my paint survived, I will wash the car and know for sure...

Shaber does good work. They fixed my Syclone bed to showroom quality. Bruce Shaber did the repair work on the 959 protype cutaway back in the day!

Yeah, I BS'd w/ Bruce (his last name is actually Monson, IIRC... he named his shop after the street it's on) when I had my WRX there. He's a really cool, old-school guy. The pics of the 959 display are cool... not to mention the 10,000 other pics of cool cars from over the years that cover his office walls.

Here's the shop's info if anyone's interested:

Just back from Concours. Check this out - all body surfaces except the rear bumper & trunk lid have damage, also the windshield and headlights/foglights. We are looking at $8k+.
Matt - besides the paint, you may want to check your wipers, any front facing emblems, grill, headlights and foglights (maybe you have the clearbra over the lights?). You & Dean were in front of me, so it's possible that the two of yours were pelted even harder, and shielded some of it from getting to me.

MikeK 2005-04-04 01:13 PM

Damn, I'm glad I decided to leave early!

So will insurance cover all of you. If so, look on the bright side, new paint, light covers etc. I know all the paperwork and stuff sucks, but a fresh looking car is always nice. Sorry to hear about that, at least now your cars look more like mine.............Wait I think I was there too.

Nice one Nick!

I'm glad I bolted out of there too. There was a ton of junk blowing around on the freeway.

Sorry I didn't know that. That totally sucks

ArthurS 2005-04-04 03:54 PM

Sucks to hear everyone. I was driving the 4Runner from Cold Springs to Reno around 8 last night and that was horrible. I never felt more uncomfortable driving. Big ass SUV and huge winds.....just doesn't mix right.

So, I have filed a sand damage claim...I meet with the adjuster soon. I'm going to need a new Paint Job, new clear Bra, New Intercooler (Possibly a new radiator) and definately a New Windshield. I hope the adjuster agrees. I can;t imagine I will have any issues, the car is hammered.

MikeSTI 2005-04-07 04:20 PM

 I can't wait, with all these claims the car condom with be required soon to afford insurance in NV.............

I think it will be better to have the Mad Max look  where's the steel mesh and barbed wire!!!!! 8)

It is actually the AC condenser in front of the radiator I think. I got one of those, and an intercooler covered as well.

If you've got the pink slip mod, make them cut you the check directly and get the STi intercooler for like $30 more than the EJ20 one. Among other possibilities.
