We have found a new Server!!!

Per Scott-
On the recommendation of Evan, and my roommate Matt, I took a look at 1and1 for web hosting. Turns out they've got really decent rates on *dedicated* servers... so I went and signed up.

We now have a 2GHz Celeron based PC w/ 256MB RAM and a 40GB hard drive being setup with the latest install of RedHat Linux. It's our own system, totally unshared w/ any other sites, and I have ROOT access! We also have 500GB/mo of bandwidth, which is about 100 times more than we're currently using.

This means we can run just about any software we want, put an ass load of pics up, and even give members their own shell accounts/homepages/email addresses/etc, also, people that have space limitations or uptime issues on their current hosts would be willing to move their site over to the SECCS server. (Dean, Art, Tyson...)

I plan on setting up a few virtual hosts for friends to earn back a little of the server cost, and perhaps we can do a quarterly "SECCS Bandwidth BBQ Fundraiser" or some other excuse to eat burgers, talk Subarus, and pass around a jar

All questions can be brought up in this thread, or addressed to Scott (sperry) via PM.

Thanks Everyone.

Matt

I am down with moving, and gladely contribute.

Eric Gangloff might be interested as well after his issue with Hoststock.

What about backup, and hardware issues with the box? How do they deal with that?

Did we get a brake being not for profit? Some companies give discounts for that...

Great job...

Uh oh there are 2 threads about the same thing.

thats some terrible moderation.

We are responsible for pretty much all aspects of the server's software (upgrades, security, backups). Since I've got a virtually identicle box here at home, I'm just gonna try to mirror it on a frequent basis, so if anything happens, I can just push my local version up. If the hardware fails, that's the host's deal, and they should be able to fix it pretty quick.

We're looking at $50/mo for the server. But if everyone that's expressed interest in having their own site hosted on the server is really in, I think we'll be able to pretty much pay for the server.

thats nice they have good deals.

Is it going to be an issue hosting multiple domains onto the one machine? Normally that is easiest with seperate IPs, can we have more than one?

We got a single IP, but I can set up virtual hosts (the webserver will return a different page based on the requested domain name). VHosts can suck, but at least the server won't be overloaded by hosting like 90 websites.

As much as I hate to do it, the attachments are getting shut down pending server migration.

tysonK 2004-01-27 07:37 PM

ah so that's where they all went.

ZER026D 2004-01-28 01:45 PM

no more image tags?

The [img ] tag shoudl still work, but actually uploading/viewing attachments is turned off.

New server should be working tonight (assuming I get time to finish up the last few things it needs to be running well). Then we'll just have to wait for the DNS propigation to go through.

Holy crap! It's up and running!

Sorry about the long delay... this forum software doesn't correctly backup the attachments database, so I inadvertantly broke everything doing the transfer because the attachemnts list didn't transfer over. It took me a bit of h4X0r1ng to get everything setup, but it seems to be all here now.

Please report any issues!

Oooh... the gallery and news pages are working, and this time the thumbnails are up! Don't ask me why the code didn't work on the old server cuz it works fine here!

So feel free to hit the gallery and browse the images. If you're the 1st to view a gallery since the server move, the thumbs will take a bit to load, since it's generating 'em, but once they're cached in the database, they should load quickly.

I think for the 1st time evAr, the site's running the way it's supposed to. How much you wanna bet it crashes tomorrow?

STIwish 2004-02-02 12:57 AM

YAY! glad to see its back up!!
