More Baking Headlight Trick

I saw an STI yesterday with a cool mod. I know many of you have baked the headlights and removed the amber parts. But didn't you then paint something black?

I thought this look looked great on a silver WRX. Is this legal? Let's get baking!

I think since the baking craze people like Scott have leaned that a heat gun around the edge of the seal is better and safer than in the oven.

I think we can do it one of these weekends or something.

It's only a matter of removing light heating seal taking out a few small brass screws and then popping out amber(and painting if you so chose) and putting it back together.

Russ at ESX said he jsut did his STi lights at 200 degrees and everything worked fine. I 'm gonna do it soon I think...not sure if I'll paint my lights black though.

Matt -- Let me know when. I'd like to bake mine as well. I hear 200 degrees for 6 minutes is the key. What about the heatgun?

We'll have a Seccs bake-a-thon!

those lights are crazy lookin! damn, is the 'baking' process a one headlight fits all? or are there different temperatures for differnt brands of headlights?

So most of ya'll are going with the oven and not the heat gun? i'd be sh*tting bricks doing that to an STi headlight.. it cant be good for your health to be that nervouse! lolol

Well, once you take the HID bulbs out, I think the housing is the same as the '04 WRX, isn't it? So if you screw it up, you're out like $275 ('02/'03 prices) or so from the dealer for a new housing.

I hosted the first bake-day, way back, and everything went fine, we can do it again soon.

You're saying the headlight w/o bulbs, ballasts, wiring, etc costs $600 per light!!?! That's insane! It's not like it's fundamentally different for the '04 vs. the '02/'03, it's just a different shape!

MikeSTI 2004-04-15 02:33 PM

but its new!!!! atleast thats how they try to justify it :x

Try calling subaruparts.com or subaruwrxparts.com for the "real" price. :P
