If you have never driven the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution – better known as an “Evo” – you really are missing something. For starters, it is perhaps the best-steering production car available in America. Throw in wonderful clutch and brake feel, smooth shifting and a very willing and responsive (if a little underpowered) turbocharged four add up to one of the most rewarding-to-drive cars in existence. And there’s no worry when it comes time to bring the experience to a halt, thanks to some very powerful Brembos that slow the Evo down on a par with some of the world’s best sports cars.
The new MR version looks to make the Evo an even more enjoyable ride with the addition of a larger turbocharger for improved low- and mid-range power and an extra gear in the form of a new 6-speed gearbox. The MR also sheds about 300 pounds, thanks to a new aluminum roof and lightweight alloy BBS wheels. Improved handling is achieved with even stickier Yokohama Advan tires, revised suspension and Mitsubishi’s famous active center differential, helping to elevate its skidpad number from 0.88g in stock form to a whopping 0.98g for the MR.

And best of all, according to Sam Mitani, the MR is bound for the U.S. “This baby is definitely headed our way,” says the editor of SPEED. Look for the MR to sell for around an amazingly low $33,000.

Here’s a first look at the new Evo MR. To learn more, be sure to pick up the inaugural issue of SPEED when it goes on sale on March 30.

If you read our report on Mitsubishi’s 2004 Evolution MR (AW, Feb. 23), you’re ahead of the curve. None other than Mitsu U.S. chief Finbarr O’Neill confirms the Subaru WRX STi Spec C-fighter will arrive on our shores by fall. The MR (for Mitsubishi Racing) comes with a six-speed manual tranny, active center differential, better medium-to-high-rpm power and substantial weight reductions by using aluminum wherever possible. Look for the U.S. version to start around $31,000.

I thought the US STi was already like 95% Spec-C... with only the gear ratios or something different?

sperry 2004-04-20 08:22 AM

And that article says nothing about a US Spec-C.... just that the EVO MR is the "Spec-C fighter", which it is... in Japan.

On the other hand, a 320hp Caddy STS w/ AWD sounds like a friggen AWESOME daily driver... now to go and scrape up $50,000.

the evo MR is comming out to the US by fall? From what i hear they will not hit the US untill next year April, but i could be wrong. I've called a few mitsu dealerships and all of them said the only car that will be comming out is the 2004 evo (no change except for a leather seat option) and the evo RS.

As far as the Evo MR goes, yes it does come with the bbs rims, 6 spd tranny, and is lightened up a bit, however, i dont think it comes with Air condition, radio, or power anything. those are all options. i think... dont know havent looked into it yet.

but, i looks SSIIICCCKKKK

FWIW in terms of racing reliability, most of the late model EVO's entered in this week's Open Track Challenge
(5 days of road course events) were sidelined by total engine failures.

How many is most? It looks like there are 4 entered. Any Idea how the STIs are doing?

Dean 2004-04-22 04:31 PM

It actually looks like 5 of 6 blew up according to Doug Hayashi on www.pulpracing.com. The 6th being basically "stockish".

Doug actually is a really funny guy, and writes some great stuff.

If you want a day by day account of the chaos that is OTC, check out the pulp stories section on his web site. I'd tell you who won OTC, but that would ruin it...

Mistubishi may be in trouble - news this morning (hopefully this isn't WTLW):

STUTTGART/TOKYO (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler AG will no longer bankroll Mitsubishi Motors and may sell its stake, leaving the German auto giant's global strategy in disarray and the future of the ailing Japanese firm in doubt.

Chief Financial Officer Manfred Gentz said on Friday that the Stuttgart-based company failed to agree with other Mitsubishi group shareholders on a bailout plan for Mitsubishi Motors Corp and would not provide any new funds.
