There is not much room for the air bag Mr. safety I vote no you drive hwy 80 to winnamucca to many dumb asses on the road

Plus... welcome to Street Mod. You can't swap a steering wheel that has an airbag in STX. :(

I'm with Eric on this... your safety isn't worth the coolness of the Sparco wheel... save it for a race car with a cage and harnesses.

MikeSTI 2004-07-22 08:55 AM

I would get it!!!! Air bags are over rated

What he said. There's nothing wrong with the stock wheel anyway...

murphy 2004-07-22 10:10 AM

I say do it or I will get it. not to mention that its illegal to remove air bag or steering wheel with one unless its already been deployed. but who cares about legal anyway when it comes to cars ...DOOOOOOO IIIIIIIT

thats nice Scott I relize they save lives, but why do they save lives is the question. BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM!!!!! I would like to see the stats on people with air freasheners that survived an auto accident and say that saved thier life right!

"The rule followed fierce debate between air bag advocates and the auto industry, which objected to the cost and warned that because the devices deployed with such force — many at well over 100 mph — they could harm people, particularly children. The warning was prophetic: 242 deaths — many of them children or small women — are blamed on air bags."

The 15,000 lives saved number comes from accident investigators that have determined that without the airbag, the person would more than likely died from the accident. I'd say the 242 people that died vs. the 15,000 saved is a worthy trade off, plus most of the deaths due to airbags was in the early 90's before the added safety of slower deploying/dual stage airbags and seat sensors that detect a child or empty seat. Unless I have a race worthy cage and harness, I certainly wouldn't drive without an airbag. They work, ask EVO Mike.

Joan Claybrook, who developed the air bag rule as NHTSA's administrator in 1977, still stings from criticism that the rule was to blame for the deaths since it required bags to deploy with enough force to protect unbelted, adult male dummies in a 30-mph crash. She said poorly designed air bags were the problem.

"They didn't have to kill people. The companies have total responsibility for that," said Claybrook, who is now president of the consumer group Public Citizen.

Brian O'Neill, an air bag advocate and president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (news - web sites), said researchers were hampered because there were no child or female crash test dummies that might have shown the dangers of air bags to smaller passengers.

Automakers paid out millions to settle air bag lawsuits and began installing less forceful devices in 1997. That action, combined with increased seat belt use and placement of infants in back seats, led to a rapid reduction in deaths. In 2003, NHTSA confirmed six deaths.

so what are your thoughts on Side Air Bags? All I know is if that air bag goes off and saves my life while knoking my sun glasses into my eyes I would rather die not to mention becoming paralized. To save a life is in full health not just breathing, they do these studies half assed and dont look at all the factors. If I am unharmed from the crash you cant say the Air Bag did anything to save my life. If I'm in a crash and it is plain to see by the carnage that the Air Bag saved what life I have left then its pointless.

Just my way of thinking I guess.

I might be missing your point, but it seems like you're saying that you can't prove an airbag saved your life... which is technically true, it can't be proven. But experts can make pretty good estimates of what would have happend if you hit the steering column or windshield instead of an airbag.

You also bring up blindness as an example of an airbag saving your life, but also causing your quality of life to go down. I'd simply argue that if the airbag went off, chances are the accident could have caused you plenty of life altering damage if you survived. Airbags aren't guarentees that everything will be hunky-dory after a wreck... but in general, you're much better off with them, than without.

Plus, think of this: If you get in a wreck, and you've removed your airbag (which is against the law) your insurance will not cover your injuries. Somthing simple like a few broken bones will cost more than the car itself. Hell there's a guy on NASIOC right now that had to have emergency surgery to remove his appendix, and he just got a $30,000 bill because he's got no insurance. Imagine the cost of a life-flight or ambulance trip, plus emergency surgery for broken bones, and several days if not weeks in the hospital (which can all happen even *with* the airbags), and you'll quickly owe the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars... all because you wanted a cool steering wheel.

See now that makes cents hehe. This would be why I wouldn't get the wheel. It would have nothing to do with its ability to save my life. :D 8)

MikeSTI 2004-07-22 11:02 AM

Tyson the wheel still looks nice though 8)

Looks like a deal, but I'm not going to poach you ;)

If you're not going to get it, I'm gonna try to obtain it for the lil' red wagon, though....

I think I'm setting some sort of record for parts acquired before the car is acquired ;)
