Upgrades for STI

There is a website xcceleration.com that has mods for an STI and I wanted to see if anyone has used this company. they are on the east coast and I would like to know if anyone locally sells mods for this car. They have a package that increases hp to 430 with an exhaust, chip, and intake. Any luck with mods on the STI?

U53D 2004-07-22 01:11 PM

everyone is aware, im pretty sure, of xcelleration.com. It is a good site, obviously, but i am unsure if anyone has ordered from them ( too much $$$)

Kevin M 2004-07-22 01:12 PM

Their claims are pure bullshit.

upgrades

Anyone in the Reno, Carson area that upgrades the STI. It seems that the exhaust is already unrestrictive. Any luck with chips?

zpeed 2004-07-22 01:21 PM

My Brother have HKS 3" muffler any recommend exhaust shop can do the 3" piping turbo back or should he buy Turbo XS Stealth back pipe with out Muffler?

MikeSTI 2004-07-22 01:21 PM

I have the AccessPort with no other Mods and I Love the way it feels. Another Member (I guess but never post, Jason) has the AP and a cat-less TBE = Stage 2 Cobb, and smokes my car. I guess that would be why I'm now in the market for a good TBE 8). As far as shops I dont know of any other then my garage, Matt's house, Scott's house (now that you moved?)and a few others that have hosted Install/Mod days

First, the stock exhaust sucks actually. Second, there are no "chips". You want a reflash from a Cobb or EcuTek dealer. The unanimous choice for us for non-DIY mods is S-Squared Motorsports in Rancho Cordova. Long drive and all, but Nate's customer service and technical skills are first rate. Almost all of us have had extensive work done by Nate, including Dean, who had his STX WRX basically built and tuned by Nate, and he's challenging for the overall title in Reno region SCCA autocross this year.

Anyways, if you're looking for more power in your STi, basically all you need is a turboback and a reflash of the ECU. It's common to get overboosting with those mods in an STi, but I think the altitude up here will help to prevent that. You can also either replace the turbo with a VF22, VF30, or VF34 for the same benefit. Those are all slightly larger but won't require fuel system upgrades if you get a reflash with it.

To make big horsepower on an STi w/o spending 10 grand... here's the list:

3" Turbo-back exhaust (w/ 1 or no cats) ~$1000
Port the turbo waste-gate (to avoid boost creep) ~$200? or go with a VF22 turbo ~$800
Dyno tuned EcuTek ECU reflash (by a reputable tuner) ~$1000

So, all said and done, that's around $2500 to $3000 for I'd guess 400 to 450hp at the crank. That's porsche territory, for less than half the cost of a porsche.

Nope. 370ish crank horsepower. That's all the stock compressor can flow for. Hence Xcelleration.com being full of shit. ;) 450 hp requires a larger turbo and fuel upgrades, etc. Still faster and cheaper than a Porsche though. :)

I thought a Vishnu stage 1 (exhaust and reflash) gets you to about 380 to 400... assuming you don't boost creep the motor to death, and a VF22 was capable of 400 to 450hp, but would be pushing the stock STi injectors?

Either way, 370 is a still a buttload of power, especially considering the gearing and low-end torque of the STi.

Anybody know where to ported at the turbo? Just wonder because when I use to have a Talon and there is an instruction with a picture on the dsm faq on how to and where to port the turbo.

IIRC most people knock the corner of the 90deg bend in the wastegate.

Kevin M 2004-07-22 10:29 PM

It's the wastegate that needs to be ported if you have a good turboback. There are a couple of established companies that have done lots of them now. Deadbolt and ATP come to mind.

Guilbert from Guilsons automotive told me that his car has a "chip", turbo back, intake, perrin frount mount, boosted 17lbs, and has 490hp. he excpects a mid to high 12 at fallon.......does anyone know if those mods would make his car that quick?

sybir 2004-07-23 06:21 AM

No possible way, on a stock turbo.......
Intake = no real horsepower, FMIC = no real horsepower, just more lag (at those boost levels). Dunno what he considers a "chip" but you're basically talking an exhaust and reflash there, plus a few baubles, and I wouldn't expect anything more than 300 WHP at the most, and that's being charitable.....

MattR 2004-07-23 06:29 AM

Yeah, I agree..unless he's running Naws! I don't think there are any all wheel drive dyno's here, so I'm not sure where the numbers are coming from, but unless there have ben some major changes to the motor, those HP levels are false.

And a 490 HP STi would run a lot faster than mid 12's.

IheartSTI 2004-07-23 10:03 AM

he claims to have, stock fuel system, internals, turbo, and clutch

All true I'm sure. Which means his car makes around 370 hp, and would run mid 12s at close to sea level. Might be able to squeak into 12s up here, but probably not.
